I’m just about to have a new comp built I don’t do gaming at all but do general computing, listen to music on it and do a lot of making DVDs and photo editing I use Pinnacle 12 ultimate for vid and Coral Paintshop Pro x3 for pictures. I do NOT over clock my computers as I don’t know what I'm doing but may use the programme that comes with the board to boost it.

I do like a nice comp even tho don’t really use what it can do.........My current system is being ditched

Asus P5E3 Board REV 1
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz
Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit & windows XP 32 bit in swop caddies
2 x Western digital Caviar black 1TB each two for OS systems other for storage (sata 3Gb) in hot swop caddies
CoolerMaster silent Pro 850 Power supply
4 Gig Corsair DDR3 XMS 1300MHz RAM
2 x LG Blue Ray burners/ Optical drives
Sapphire Radeon x1600 pro 512mb Graphics card (old just followed me up computers lol)
Monitor is Iiyama ProLite B2409HDS
Case - Aspire X-Cruise
Silent knight AL CPU cooler

And I'm hoping for/to
Use my old power supply as it’s quite new

Ill use both my old optical drives as well
And use my old monitor but may add a second one

Use 2 of the Western dig 1TB HDD for storage (photos music, vids etc) will stick with 3Gbs rather than new 6Gbs as have them all ready but will upgrade when HDD come back down in price

A new 120 Solid state drive (Kingston Hyper) For OS and all my programmes windows 7 premium (32 or 64 but not sure yet)


Intel i7 2600K 3.40GHz
Nvidia GTX 570HD (just one)
Corsair vengeance 1800MHz DDR3 RAM will go 8 or 16 Gig
Case coolermaster cosmos 1000 V2 Black edition
So which M board would you recommend Asus Z68 or P67 and do I go the best the deluxe versions I really would appreciate your help as the more I read the more confused I’m getting about it all

Well 8 gigs is nice but 16 is better. I am considering going up from 8 gigs my self and getting another 8 gig kit. As for the motherboad. Did you have a particular price range?
Because you don't have to be a gamer to get the best parts still. If wasnt gaming i'd still want the best rated and gaming grade stuff, if i need it or not.
 
z68 is newer. I'd go with that one, it is generally recommended to go with z68 over p67.

I wouldn't get 1800 ram. Just get 1600 ram with low latencies, 9 or lower. 8 gigs is more than enough for WIN7. The PSU is more than sufficient for this build.

No I dont have a price range I onley upgrade every 3-4 years so just want to get it right. No I dont do any gameing at all but like you say want the best comp I can get thats sensible price ......Buzznut says dont go 1800 Ram why not is it just price ??? Now if I remember right from last time the lower the Latencies the better/faster the RAM ...so why not just get 1800 ram with low Latencies ...or is that not possible ???
 
The corsair vengeance series RAM has a higher failure rate. I'd go with G.Skill (RipjawsX).

Z68 gives you the best new features and future room to upgrade - I have the Asus Maximus Gene-Z (Z68) and love it.
 


Its fine, yes its just from a cash perspective. You can get 8 gigs of DDR3 1600 ram for $40 US or less. You can find lower latencies for 1600 vs 1800 speed.

Considering Sandy bridge's memory controller, running DDR3 1600 memory with decent timings is the best option:

Most benchmarks show no increase in going above 1600 on the RAM - so no need to spend money on something that won't help. But see my above note on Corsair RAM.
 
Oh one other thing the Graphics card Ive choosen Nvidia GTX570 Is that a good card for video and photo work I all so have the one monitor at the mo but may wish to add a second so I can have (video photo work) Tools on one and preview on the other.
 


Might be a bit overkill actually - but should be great for several years to come for video/photo work (and has CUDA acceleration for programs that support it). And it can easily handle two monitors.
 
Id all so like to say thank you I've got further in 2 hours by posting on heer tonight and sensible info in lay mans terms I can understand than weeks of reading Teq write ups on the net
 
With that card GTX570 that has one mini HDMI socket so dose that mean I cant have both monitors in HD I can onley have both in DVI ?

Well, the thing is that Nvidia doesn't make their own cards - they're all partner versions. I'll presume you were looking at a reference card like this:

That board can support up to 2 monitors at once, in any combination of: 2x DVI, 1x DVI and 1x miniHDMI.

There are also other versions. Such as: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130613

That second board can support up to 2 monitors at once, in any combination of: 2x DVI, 1x DisplayPort 1x DVI, 1x DisplayPort 1x HDMI, or 1xHDMI 1xDVI. They're both 570s. And there are other makers than just EVGA.
 
But surley if Im right heer DVI is only digital not HD but HDMI is full HD if there is only one HDMI socket .....surley only one monitor can be High Deff not two
 
Single DVI port can power up to 1920x1080/1200 (1080p). Dual-link dvi can go above that. So yes, if you have two monitors greater than 1080p, you'll have to use dual-link DVI and HDMI. But for 2 1080p monitors, you can use each separately.

If you're really concerned, get the displayport version - it's cheaper anyhow and DP can power as large a monitor as you want.
 
Nope again brilliant info learn some thing new every day so that solves that problem thanks BRILLIANT lol Dont surpose you know where I can get a Cooler Master cosmos 1000 But I'm after the black edition with the window. Its easy to find without the window but looked all over the place for one with the window and cant find one,
 
Yes that was the one DAM lol well its a toss up between the Cosmos 1000 in silver and black with the window then or the 1100 which you can now get a window for ......so the black edition of the 1000 you can get you cant get a window for then
 
Ok haveing looked at the websites you can still buy the Cooler Master Cosmos 1000 Pure Black Aluminium Gaming Case RC1000-KKKN2-GP.......Looking on the coolermaster site you can buy a transparant window for the Cosmos 1000 but it says this all so fits the Cosmos 1100 S They all so sell a BLACK window for the Cosmos 1100 S ....My thinking being if the silver window fits the 1100 then surley the black window would fit the 1000 and there for fit the 1000 Pure black that I'm assuming is just a black version of the silver and black 1000 .....
