Windows XP Compatability Mode

I've been wondering if anyone has used the compatabilty option in Windows XP? (When you change it the properies of a file) I've tried it on several working games and I saw no difference. I've tried it on several non-working DOS games in hopes of getting then to run in XP and still nothing.
Is this option just for show?

The greatest pleasure in life it doing what other poeple tell you you can't do.
