There was a post about this last month, except no one replied...

The problem is an Application Error relating to winlogon.exe at the logon of Windows Xp. [OK] reboots the computer, [Cancel] should apparently attempt to debug, but it only hangs the screen.

winlogon-exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x10017ef4" referenced memory at "0x0000000". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

Safe Mode etc. do not help...

Is there a way to backup the important files off my hard drive (i.e. get into windows) before I reformat?

thanks for the help!

Have you tried to reinstall/repair windows?

By repairing you should still have your data.

Another way would be to install windows in a different harddrive.

This should get your data accessible anyways. Hope that helps

These are all really good tips and I'll remember them if ever it happens again. But this time, somehow, the problem solved itself: after a few days of kicking and shunning my computer, on time, miraculously, i got in. And so I transfered all the important files to my laptop and reformated as soon as possible.

Thanks anyways,

Horia
