WinXP and Games

Ok, I admit I haven't even tried troubleshooting this yet, but I don't want to waste too much time doing it.

I installed WinXP Pro Final and really like it so far. I didn't play any games on it though until last night and when I tried playing UT, I was getting 4-6FPS. Let me tell you how painfull that was. Actually I'll spare you all. It didn't make a difference if I was in 800x600 or 1600x1200, same thing.

Since I did the upgrade should I reinstall all my games, format and go fresh, or is my old videocard not going to work with XP? I have a V3-3000 on that machine.

How much work do I have to put into this OS to make the games run good? Are all games going to have to have patches? Keep in mind I'm stuck with my old drivers for my videocard since 3DFX is gone.

it's probably your sh!tty v3000 card. The drivers for the voodoo probably dont work well in winXP. Maybe look on the 3dfx website ( if it still exist) or try finding wickedGL driver for voodoo.

I know it's old, but it should still work. Since I went from 98se to XP should I use the 2K drivers?

I would personally advise you to use the microwave.

But, I've read that 'really well written' 2k drivers work in XP....

My advice would be to just discard your Voodoo3 for a fast and cheap GeForce2 MX-400. You won't be sorry!

Install the 2000 drivers....worth a try.

I had the same problem installed XP and tried running deux Ex
and it wouldn't run. I then tried installing Win2k Drivers for my ATI Radeon 64MB DDR. And still no go with duex, though Quake 3 did run. The only thing I didn't try was to install Via 4-1 drivers in XP. Which I heard bad things about so haven't yet.

Wasn't sure about the Via drivers in XP, so I'm running Win ME on a second partition for my Games until ATI releases XP drivers in Mid October or so.

I've tried a number of different drivers and nothing works. The best ones are microsoft's drivers, but the fps is pathetic and the quality not very good. The glide seems to be the problem. Not really sure what to do now, but I guess I could just run 98se on this machine.

Works perfect. I'm actually getting better FPS now than before. In UT I was actually hitting 10 FPS more than I did with 98se. Diablo LOD worked perfect too.

Problem solved. Hope this helps some others who don't feel like getting rid of the voodoo3.

This is a very old, old, old one, but I figured I'd bump it just in case people were looking for good Voodoo3 drivers for an old computer they want XP on (like me ). Just fixin up my old computer to give to my family and decided to put XP on it, knew I could count on the THGF to give me the answer. Thanks and hope this post can help someone like me.

Yeah, I still use those drivers and they're great for that system. Maybe someone has found better voodoo drivers by now though?
