Hey,here's a silly one. Finances dictate I install WinXP myself. I intend to reformat the HDD for a clean install. The drive is currently running Win98. I am not interested in a dual boot. Do I have to run FDisk and create new partitions (just one for C:)? To clean the drive don't I use the Format command? My confusion lies in whether one must always run FDisk before the format command. IIRC isn't the format command Format C: /s? If it is, will the system files from a Win98SE drive work for an install of WinXP?

Thanks,

Brandt

Real simple

Save all data needed to transfer to new OS
(98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com works the best)
Start computer with 98 bootdisk in floppy drive. Make sure the floopy is one ofthe boot options in the BIOS
fdisk/mbr
format C:
reboot
install XP
Update XP

Couldn't be much easier. Thanks for the help. However, if formatted using a Win 98 SE bootdisk, will I get the option to use the NTSF file system of WinXP, or will I be trapped in FAT32 land?

Windows will ask you what file system you want during the install. So your hard drive will be formatted twice. I always prefer to start with a clean slate even though XP will format the hard drive again.

To answer your question. Just pick NTFS udring the install.

Again, thanks, everyone. I had actually found my answer right after I posted. I had been concerned about what to expect during installation. Black Viper's site answered my questions. There is a step by step walkthrough with pictures of each screen. I understand installing software is by no means rocket science, but I become paralyzed with fear due to all the horror stories. Therefore, being taken by the hand is very helpful to me since I've never installed an OS before.

Go to www.blackviper.com for a great guide on XP installation.
