Worrying temps on inspiron 1525

Hi ill try to sum up the events that have occured with my dell laptop inspiron 1525

Specs:
>intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5450 @ 1.66GHz
>windows vista 32 bit OS
>3GB ram
>160GB HDD

issues
>december 2009, playing games such as warcraft III and armadillo run aswell as watching movies on small resolution causes computer to turn off.

>recently, while having system on "power saver" i can run MS world, excel and have firefox up with multiple tabs and the system seems stable.

>recently, it appears that if i start an AVG virus scan the computer shuts off midway through.

i have installed speedfan 4.40 to moniter the temps they are as follows
>idle core0 48C core1 48C
>MS word/excel firefox core0 57C core1 58C
>avg scan (first 5min core0 63 and rising core1 64 and rising

does this look like its overheating to you, id really appreciate some feed back on solutions

This looks fine. I've had my laptop (*gasp*), a plastic macbook, have it's CPU go up to 93C. Laptop processors were meant to take heat to an extent.

See if you can detect the temperature of your graphics core with HWMonitor.

Run a game or something in a window and see if any temperatures in HWMonitor go above 70C.

ill give it a go, the laptop only runs of the intel(R) graphics media accelerator, so its not like i do any high end gaming of it.

If your implying that it may be a graphics hardware issue, how could this be linked to AVG shutting the system down? yes i have redownloaded it and reinstalled it.

ill get back to you with the grahics core temps

Hehe, that's what I thought in the middle of writing my post. :p

I mean to say, that if any temperatures are bothersome to you in HWMonitor, then we can draw an appropriate conclusion.

This could also be a power issue. Hopefully not, but it's definitely possible.

ok i just tested warcraft III, in a few different battles.. this is what CPUID HW moniter gave.. im not too sure which one is the intergrated graphics. take a look.... i played for about 10min

Mmmm, looks fine from here. Can you show a screenshot of HWMonitor? I have to admit I'm not used to this format. :(

TPUCapture is a good screenie program if you don't have the Snipping Tool.

Hmm. We're not getting the temperature of the GPU, but your temps look fine!

When you load your computer, do your fans turn on? Do you hear a fan turn on and feel the air either going in or out at the vent?

So far, it doesn't look like the problem is overheating.

Did you make any recent hardware or software change to your computer?

Did this problem happen all of a sudden (random shutdowns) or gradually?

I know some of the questions sound silly, but they're in the best interest of solving the problem!

i think something that is of interest is that all of this was happening when the battery plan was on "high performance" but now that i have it on "power saver" the only time its happened is when AVG was running.

Hmmm... If possible, see if you can flash your BIOS. But take precautions. A bad BIOS flash will brick your motherboard.

What's interesting is that the issues (playing a QT vid) and playing the physics game (unless it's flash) have to do with the GPU. The performance/battery saver settings could possibly throttle the GPU, but that still doesn't fully explain the problem.

I say, flash the bios, and cross your fingers. Try to close any unnecessary applications and make sure you have power.

I disagree on two fronts. 93c his horrifically high, even if it continues to function. I'm speaking here of your macbook.

As for your unit, tarshm, I have worked on laptops that were set by default to auto-shutdown if the cpu temps hit somewhere in the 75c range. This may be what is happening to yours.

Dust can accumulate in the unit and interfere with airflow more easily than desktops. I would disassemble the unit and clean out dust buildup with a can of compressed air.

Auto-shutdown under load on a laptop screams "overheating problem".

thanks for the ideas falcon, i had a thought in the back of my mind that they would shut down to avoid damage to the CPU and nearby components. Just a few questions that may seem noobish:

>are laptops easy to disasemble and reasemble, or do i stand to damage or mis connect something, if you know of a good site with phots or instructions thatd be very very helpful

>im assuming i can get a can of compressed air from any hardware store (im australian)

TJ Max for my CPU (T7400) is 100C. I've had my macbook since 2006, and it's been running fine ever since.

Good call with the airflow though. That may be the problem.

How easy they are depends a little on the model and your technical skill. But I think you can handle it even if your not technical. Just give yourself some time and a safe, roomy workspace.

Unfortunately, I do not know any sites off hand with internal laptop pictures. I will post some if I find any. But the one thing they have in common is they are pretty packed in. But remember, all you need to do is clear out dust buildup.

Cans of compressed air are a common computer cleaning tool. Any business that sell computers and computer components should carry it. At least here in the U.S. they do.
 


Even if the chip can take it, more heat is not a good thing. At least its working for you. I have no experience with macbooks. But a lot of PC laptops will not go that high without shutting down.

Not to complicate matters, but you may want to add two more things to your list of things to check:

Battery. An older battery can start to heat-up before it's about to go, and a laptop is small enough that the overheating battery could be affecting the processor. Especially under load, feel the battery compartment to see if the battery is too hot to touch. You may also notice some swelling (the plastic housing is bulging).

Memory. The apps you're talking about are also memory intensive. I've had a similar issue in the past with a desktop where it turned out to be bad memory. Try running MemTest on your laptop to check for issues, especially right after one of your auto-shutdowns.

Mmm. The opposite can be said for me, :p. I have a lot of experience with mac laptops, but not really PC laptops. The plastic macbooks were notorious for heating problems, but strangely enough, there were very few occurrences of the systems actually dying from overheating. I take precautions to have the temps a little lower, nowadays. Doesn't Speedstep/Thermal Monitor throttle the CPU when it gets hot? Shutting down at 75C sounds a little silly...

Sometimes if I try the in-thread-view-edit, waiting a few seconds before posting seems to do the trick, but idk...

Good call with the battery. That's definitely true. If you get a memory error, you usually see a blue screen. Dell tends to use Hynix memory, and I've had that stuff go bad on me day in and day out. (in Dells, to be ironic.).

Running memtest wouldn't be a bad idea, but first see if you can clean out your computer. If that doesn't work, I'd recommend running Memtest. And if that doesn't work, flash your BIOS with the latest version. And if that doesn't work, [strike]use more gun[/strike] then check back and we'll see what we can do.

Honestly, I'm convinced it lies somewhere within the problems we mentioned, but the only way to tell is to troubleshoot.

My latitude D620 has a core duo T2300E. I ran an app called Core damage, and stressed the system. It reached 187F when I prevented the fan from spinning. It didn't shut down. Sometimes the temp spikes to 160F when turning on the computer, but then it falls back to 70-130F. I know the CPu can go over 200F, so 180F shouldn't kill anything. I don't think the issue is overheating. But you could clean the heatsink out, and re-apply thermal paste (i used arctic silver on my latitude d620), and update the BIOS, and chipset/CPU drivers from support.dell.com, and see if it works anybetter.
