At your own risk - plz note M$ caution ...

Edit: Please note the Microsoft warning/caveat - I have not tried this SP myself - but got the link from people who have ... without problems.
It's intended for tech support ppl to download and copy for installs on individual PC's ... especially those with dial-up.

But again ... no guarantees!

So I can't download this and use it to update a single PC? The reason I ask is because I have a friend who has dial-up, and he asked me to downnload the full update and put it on a CD for him. He has XP Pro SP1, what can I do for him?

Yes you can download it and update a single PC, that is exactly what this is for. I never use Windows Update to install service packs, I always download these versions so I have a copy ready to install as soon as I format. Also handy for friends who have dial up.

I just got down downloading and installing it. It takes a fair amount of time to install but it also is changing quite a bit.

The only reason it says for network installs, is becuase it is meant to save time for System Admins, so they don't have to download 270 MB from each computer, they have an offline copy.

I downloaded it to see if it worked 🙂 (i didn't really doubt it wouldn't)

it did, everything is fine and running ok.
I have XP Pro.

i always download the network version of the Service Pack, i don't have to always download it then and its handy to have on CD for others to use or to go quickly update another PC.

cheers
KJ

Hey,
easy fella, this is only one of hundreds of links on newsgroups, forums leading people to that download page, even THG has an article on it with a big fat link going to it.

If anyone doesnt read the warning then thats their fault, I cant stop peoples curiosity and I am sure Micro$oft loves the attention.

Lol

I have intergrated it onto a XP pro CD (XPpro_SP2), works fine on my test PC so far, a few things have changed but nothing to be worried about as all or most of it can be disabled anyway.
For Jane and John Doe home user I think it will provide greater security protection, also less confusion about firewalls, adware, and even spyware perhaps, although M$ has always had inbuilt phone home stuff in Windows that can be disabled in services on XPPro anyway.
Another feature was the M$ anti-virus advice which allows you to run a trial AV from many different companies and some are 6 months others are 30 Days, once again great for Mr and Mrs Doe who know diddly squat about security.

Well Iam sure SP2 will keep this forum thread running for many months to come.

(Warning: don't adjust services unless you know what you are doing!!! -just had to add that just in case someone rides me for not mentioning it.)

Yea Scotty - here is another link to the SP2 download (same file) in a BitTorrent site.

these folks have made the 270MB XPSP2 Network Installation Package available for download. Why can’t Microsoft take advantage of technology like this, instead of phasing it in “over several months”?
And Lockergnome's Tech News Watch ...

There's a dozens ... same download pkg.

I hope by posting this will help somebody else. Big problems after sp2 install. (Test computer..) Installed sp2 on a test machine, made a restore point, and ran setup. Setup went fine without any problems, had setup make a uninstall point for my system before installing sp2. Rebooted the computer - slow to log onto the desktop. Taskbar was off screen for some reason. Window hotkey will not pull up the start menu, windows + m does not work anymore. System restore is broken can not restore system before sp2, sp2 uninstall does not work, says can't find files. Excite.com webpage broke, only shows 3 links and everything else is blank. Our local intranet webpage did not display had to add it to safe zone. No network connections listed under networking but still can browse the network and internet. Can view event logs but can not open them up to read the details. ICF service will not start and about 10 other services on the computer will not start. I think it is because ICF can not start it will not allow the other services to start? Computer is worthless now, time to RIS the computer. Doing research now trying to understand what happened. I will let everybody know if and when I find the fix and hope somebody else might have a clue also. Thanks

Per http://www.ca.com

Update: Windows XP SP2 introduced a Windows Firewall component. By default the firewall is set to block ports that eTrust Antivirus needs. We would recommend to perform the following:

For eAV 6.0, 7.0 and 7.1 installations, please run the AVEnablePorts.exe utility. The utility can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.ca.com/pub/inoculan/AVEnablePorts.exe.

Windows XP SP2 also removed the Anonymous Access in the Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

For eAV 7.1 installation, this is not affected.

For eAV 6.0 installation, please apply fix QO58103.

For eAV 7.0 installation, please apply fix QO58101.

This may not help your situation but M$ is now allowing organizations to block automatic downloads of SP2

Microsoft on Tuesday posted a toolkit that blocks Windows' Automatic Update from grabbing Windows XP Service Pack 2, an option enterprises concerned about lack of testing time had been demanding.

I am sorry it went wrong, how did you install it, did you do the slipstream or downloaded and install it?

This download is designed for those who wish to slipstream xppro to xppro sp2, it is not used as an update.

Anyway, just throw in a copy of Win XP sp1 and re-install or it, ok you have lost one hour.
However, before anybody does anything read the warning article that accompanies the link, slipstream the damn thing then you are done.
Besides you should always back up their data and have a recent Image of the operating system drive stashed away somewhere then this would not be a problem. Really it only takes a few minutes a month or a week like I do to backup and image the o/s drive and my must not loose data, saves hours of re-installing the o/s, drivers, programs etc. I remember it would take me most of one day to do it that way with all the heart sinking feelings of what’s lost compared to 10 mins and I am up and running again.

"And Lockergnome's Tech News Watch ..."

True, but I also posted a notice in there. I mentioned that I thought that anyone who rushed in to apply SP-2 was crazy. It's not like there is any day to day goodies in it.

A service pack is pretty much a roll-up of previously released patches, so unless a person has been blocking the usual auto-update, I can't see anything terribly exciting that needs to be installed right away.

I figure that about the time the CD's hit Wal-Mart, it should have some bugs ironed out.

Ok - went home and installed on another computer and as far as i can tell no problems like i listed before. But the computer i loaded sp2 on was bare OS (sp1a)which had 3 games on it. So must be some kind of comp. with software at work. Anti-virus maybe? (Etrust 7.0) caused problem for my work test computer? ummm? More testing needed. All i can say is test test test, and backup, backup and backup.

Thanks Jake...This not going to be fun testing every app at my work to see which one broke sp2 or the other way around. :)

Installed just fine on my work machine... going to try it on my home machine tonight or tomorrow night.

I didn't say that no-one would be able to run it without problems. I simply say that it makes sense to let others jump off that cliff first, so you can see how deep the water is.

What are you talking about Ryan - Except for a few isolated problems (which M$ projected) - those who know have had a pretty seamless install. Mine went without a hitch. I posted a link to a troubleshooting site - for the sake of anyone who might have issues. It seems Zyprd had a problem - the link was for his sake.

My install is fine - just like everyone else's I know.
