Yikes! Another blow to Nvidia

I didnt read this whole thread and didnt see if you already discussed it, but I have to strongly disagree with the idea that the N64 was in anyway inferior to the PS1.
I own both and theres nothing on PS1 that beats playing Perfect Dark. Firstly my PS1 can't even do 4players w/o an adapter (which of course leads to few games being 4player, and few gamers owning the adapter).

Getting a bunch of friends together for some 4player Perfect Dark, let alone those Nintendo classics they always put out like Mario Party, Super Smash Bros to name a few... lots of fun.
The 64 as a great deal if someones looking for a cheap party system. It wasnt cheap when I bought it though.
Everyone has their opinion I guess but mines based off of hours upon hours of fun with my friends and the 64.

Ways in which Nintendo can boost sales for next console.
1.Pick a decent colour. Purple? It looked like a fisher price console. The platinum was good, the Pearl White looks good as well as the mint green. Make those colours the basic colours and you'll gain more credibility.

2. Treat us westerners with respect. the XBox is only slightly behind the GC in world sales yet it had to compete against the PS2, all it takes is some common courtesy and they can almost double their worldwide sales.

3. Release it with a game everyone wants to buy. in the past 15 years only 3 consoles have been released with "Must Have Games". The SNES with SMW, N64 - it had both SM64 and Zelda OOT before the Christmas period and the XBox with Halo. The PS1, PS2 and GC had no landmark titles for at least 6 months after their release. Give us Zelda, Metroid or a good Mario game on it's release and we will rush out to buy it... hell include a proper Next Gen pokemon game and it will beat the PS3 and XBox2 for initial sales.

The other 2 main issues are being resolved, Nintendo has dropped their royalty fees for 3rd party game creators so we should see more of those games for the next console and Nintendo has started to embrace the "mature" market, with the release of the Res Evil series, Soul Calibur and True Crimes, Nintendo have changed their opinion on the matter.

Now if only they'd release their versions of the Sims (Animal Crossing, Mother, etc.) worldwide we'd see more support and sales for Nintendo's consoles.

hmmmm..............guys~~~~ we went "a little" out of topic here lol

Bah! That's what makes these long threads so unique! We're weaving the loom out of 100% THGC fibre and making a nifty looking sock thingy while we do it  . Ok, someone slay this thread before we start talking about the price of rice in China.

Let's be honest, it was either an open ended discussion on the future of the console market or ANOTHER thread about nVidia and ATI. It's your choice.

I agree. Anyone born pre or circa 1980 that lived through the NES heyday knows that was truley the only MUST HAVE system that has ever been released. It was bigger than life, even compared to the PS consoles.
I havent seen a sony PS cartoon series, cereals, or other forms of massive mainstream takeover like the big N had.

Xbox has a long way to go IMHO... my current favorite system but something seems very massively pushy, microsoft style about it... extreme graphics, extreme everything. It is uber no doubt to its competition but not the most attractive system to most old school nintendo reared kids.

Yeah no other brand has successfully created the symbols that nintendo has. Only Sega with sonic was this ever even approached for brand recognition, but never had the same amount of character devolopment the mario crew has.
Next on my list would be Pitfall Harry from the atari 2600 days. While modern gamers might not recognize this immediately, I stand up and take look when that names thrown around also.

For instance the pitfall 95 game that was released sometime around windows 95... fun game!

Another side note- the real strength to nintendo is that game designer Miyamoto or whatever.. he did the Marios, Super Smash Bros., basically whatever was truley innovative he did first. Heck he prob even did Mario Kart, which is still fun today.

Nintendo is just THE game system and always will be.

Actually Kinney, you needn't think I was bashing the N64's GAMES!

I was actually stating how inferior that box was in graphics and programmability. It's a POS at that. Horrid cigarette box hands for characters, arsewiped frame rates of 10FPS in some games, are just the few things that made this console a 64-bit markitecture.

Game-wise, there are indeed a lot of them. I could never deny that! I mean, you did read that I own a GC and praise party games, right?
I know very well of the amazing SSB, Mario Kart, Mario Party serie. There are tons of games on N64 that are pure fun, but most of them are Nintendo made. The rest often didn't stand out. It was pure "64-bit hype". The PS1 to me has less games that are awesome, but those few, are amongst the best ever to me. AND PS1 has better graphics, save for no bilinear filtering. N64 was a lie really, 64-bit isn't better than 32-bit on PS1, it was a cheap processor with 64-bit INTEGER FOR 3D. Now that is downright cheap. Lately we use 32-bit float precision, which is billions of times more precise and stunning.

Sorry you read my statement wrong!
I'm a Nintendo "fanboi" inside, they made my childhood worth it with the SNES (BUNDLED WITH A DAMN SMW GAME AND 2 CONTROLLERS FOR VALUE!). But I don't go blantantly spreading the hype of its hardware like the zealots would. Nintendo has and always will be GAMEPLAY first.

But the N64 did produce SM64 and Zelda OOT which are still regarded as some of the best 3D platform/adventure games around. The PS1 could never match those 2 games for graphic quality and still puts to shame many of the next gen consoles's attempts. And those 2 games were cartridge based.

Kind of off topic...but did you see the NEW console coming out soon? It's going to be webTV based where you can play ANYTHING online...you wont even need to buy the game on the shelf. This sounds like trouble for Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo. If this thing is as good as it sounds...those consoles will be history. http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/08/27/hln.game.phantom/index.html

Naw, deep down it's like a PC almost.

Still cannot replace games on the GC, for parties, for example.

It sounds cool though. I've been hearing about it since months.

The graphics were good, but not THAT good. I like the bright look in Mario 64, and OOT does have its strengths. But, there are too many things I can point out that show it could've been better. Take the 2D trees in M64. It's not a problem, since I am aware they were at the beginning of the N64's days.
Still, those games were great in graphics and gameplay, but PS1 to me still beats 'em visually.

and still puts to shame many of the next gen consoles's attempts
What did you mean by that?

From the rumors I've heard, the "Phantom" basically *is* a PC... like the Xbox... but it has to download all of the games it plays and is dependant on an online connection.

I've also heard rumors that it's Linux-based...

Who knows? Sounds like a neat idea, but it's all vaporware as far as I'm concerned, the only screenshots of the actual unit have been CG mockups. I've never seen any actual pictures of one.

Eden, I've seen some quite a few games on all the consoles which aren't as good graphically as those 2 N64 games, and not all of them are cheapy games either.

It's the same way that Soul Calibur looks almost identical to the Dreamcast version even though SC2 has been optimized for each console.

Also I don't like the look of the Phantom and I don't believe it will sell well. Nintendo have pulled out of online games because there isn't a demand for them, the Box live sales cover less than 1/5th of all the Xboxs purchased and the Sony figures are lower still. Great idea but it will fall flat on it's face.

It is is astonishing how good games designed for the original Playstation compared visually to the N64 which was a year to 1 1/2 years newer than the Playstation, especially considering that the Playstation had like 8 megs of RAM and a 2 meg video card with only software rendering capabilites.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

oh, phew!
i agree with you completely on your sentiments.

i just have a question. you may say that nvidia cheats and stuff, but i notice that most of the tech support questions asked in this forum deal with ATi cards not working properly. any reasons for this?

Well its like anything else... when you sell alot of something and most people have it, your going to have a higher rate of problems and failures than if a product isn't out there in peoples hands.

I'm a big fan of American made cars, I view that situation the same as this. Until the foreign car boom/gas crisis, everyone drove American.. so the Japanese created a cheap, small, essentially useless car that did its purpose well.
But never pulled any boats, hauled anything or did anything but do its purpose of getting you from Taipai to Hong Kong (or whatever).
From years of owning American cars, it was easy to say they were junk, gave problems.. especially as they got older.
I've heard people complain how the brakes went out on their Chevy Tahoe when their Camry went 150,000 miles before any work.. well that truck weighs about 3,000 lbs (harder to stop) and has multiple purposes, other than rather unsafetly transporting your family as in the Camrys case.

While this is not a right-on and perfect analogy, I think the situations parallel.

ATI has a higher quality product that people are buying.
Nvidia puts the images up on the screen, but like a foriegn car it cuts my corners in actually doing it and you end up with essentially a POS. Might get you around the block, but won't do it with any class or style.

In fact, like most underpowered foreign cars, the FX series seems to need a supercharger to perform on par with its American or ATI equivelent. FlowFX anyone?

While I will admit NV drivers are probably better than ATIs still, I cannot confirm this as my 9800 has not arrived.. so this might also be, albeit small, part of the reason.

I hope my insightful and wise outlook helped.

I think the ATI drivers are pretty darned good now.
Updates seem to come out weekly fixing various game bugs.

And despite the nvidia detonators being "wonderful" drivers i still had a load of problems getting my geforce2pro to work well with win2k. horrible performance with some driver revisions, and wierd glitches using others.

Ie only ever seen a couple of glitches due to drivers with my r9800pro, and i think all bar one was fixed with the next catylist release.

Umm, American's don't make the fastest consumer cars. The Europeans do. Another thing is, most people don't need the towing capacity of a truck, althought there are plenty of foreign cars that can do this. Most people like to get from point A to point B without having to call a tow truck. There is a reason why Japanese cars are top sellers in America.

Yep, I know dude. As much as we make interesting 'discourse' here, Life is definitely more important. 😎

Rigth now it's hard for me to participate as much as I'd like, and I have a BAD feeling for the next month it's not going to get better with Univ. starting up again. At least I've got Oct. and Nov. before Ski season really picks up again; then I'll be back to 2-5 posts a week.

Anywhooo, enjoy life man, well as much 'life' as you can find in OK  (I taunt you cause it SUXs [after CA] to steal a line I heard somewhere).
