Welcome to the Spring 2019 Best PC Builds Competition! For over two decades Tom's Hardware has brought you news and reviews of the latest in PC hardware, while the famous forum has grown to more than 2 million members. Because of their expertise and the constant requests for help with PC builds, our members have developed a talent for finding the best prices and putting together the best system builds.

This thread is for the $500 Console Killer budget category. We are looking for the best performing gaming PC under $500. Please only submit builds within the $500 budget category to this thread. All other builds will be disqualified.

Submissions will be accepted over the next 2 weeks.

Please make sure to follow the ground rules below. Any builds over budget will be disqualified.

Here are the ground rules:
  • Only one build per budget category, per user. Multiple builds from a single user or duplicate accounts will be disqualified.
  • Do not go over budget.
  • Use only Amazon AND/OR Newegg to source parts.
  • DO NOT USE Amazon 3rd Party Sellers or Newegg Business to source parts.
  • Use list prices only: coupons, rebates, bundles or any other limited-time offers will not be accepted.
  • Do not include shipping or tax in your final budget.
  • Do not include the Operating System, Monitor or VR Headset, Keyboard, Mouse or Gamepad.
  • All builds must have a name.
  • Do not put your forum handle in the name of your build, and avoid odd capitalizations & symbols.
  • Provide links to the Amazon and/or Newegg product pages of each component — we encourage users to use PCPartPicker's System Build for speedy construction. Do not post a link to your build, but rather please be sure to export as BBCode for a quick copy/paste to the forums:
Here's an example build for formatting help:

The Red Phantom:

Solid system, designed all around for future upgradability. Motherboard is a solid B450 chipset platform with best in price range power delivery and VRM. Should be able to power six core Ryzen CPUs both present and future without any issues at stock clocks.

Also splurged on PSU, computer case, and storage, for extra quality of life improvements.

Name: Against the Grain.

Since the i3-8100 beats the 2400G without OCing and with cheaper DDR4-2400 (in dual channel). Mobo has 4 RAM slots for future expandability. Also, went with an SSD which has a DRAM cache. I think the Asrock Phantom D has a better cooler than the Power Color Red Dragon for the same price. The Thermaltake H15 case has a dust filter for the front fans and PSU, [acrylic] side panel window, and has a good, open layout with [limited] cable space behind the mobo tray.

And since I've got $7 to spare, let's face it, a single 120mm exhaust won't cut it. So we'll throw in a 120mm White LED fan for $5.99

Total = $498.19
A bit difficult to make sure none of the PCPartPicker prices are sale/shellshocker prices, but I put in the time and made sure that these are 100% non-sale prices. A lot of people are going to get disqualified on their case selection alone so far.

[Edit] added a couple more sentences to first paragraph to explain choices.

The Lounger

A console replacement with a focus on investing in the comforting QoL aspects that PCs provide such as 1TB SSD, aesthetic SFF chassis, feature-rich and capable motherboard while still being able to game relatively well at 720p medium and/or 1080p low by giving the 2200G a healthy bit of memory clock. There is plenty of PSU headroom to add a midrange GPU and CPU combo further down the line, or of course the top end Ryzen 3xxx APUs when they arrive.

I did include 16GB of RAM but the price went up to $534 which just exceeded the limit. The 8GB isn't great but with it including a 6 core processor and an RX580 I thought it was a decent trade off.
As per the rules, this build will not qualify.

A basic PC capable of solid 1080p gaming at 120 Hz
SSD + HDD gives 1.5 TB of storage, 4 core/8 thread Ryzen R3-2200G is adequate, even though we aren't using its built-in GPU because of the much better RX-570 GPU. The plain-jane case gives this a 'stealth' look if you take it to a LAN party. It'll look like you brought a 'potato' of an office PC, thus the name

(edit: removing the Newegg Business links required dropping the HDD to 1 TB, and lowering the RAM to 2666 - though that can probly be overclocked by losening the timings a notch)

I went for value for money, performance-centric build.
Ryzen 3 2200G as it's as fast as the i3-8100 for less money but only slightly more expensive than the 1200.
I tried to do a 1660 ti build but it's just not happening with this budget and only using Amazon, Newegg so settled for a 1660 build instead.
As the brief mentions a gaming PC I went for a powerful GPU to take the load and the CPU being suitably powerful to drive it.
Surely there isn't much in terms of storage but it's a gaming PC nonetheless.
With CPU + GPU maxing TDP at 200W and only 1 more SSD to drive I thought a 400W PSU is enough in terms of wattage and amperage.
Would have liked DDR4-3000 for the extra mile but thought to go for dual channel DDR4-2666, the lesser of the 2 evils to try and squeeze as many frames out of it.
The case can fit this GPU as per other testimonials of fitting much longer GPUs.
So there, performance-centric console killer.
You saw it here first!
