_Some_ exe files - Windows cannot find the file

Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general (More info?)

When double clicking the actual file, Windows reports "windows cannot find
file ... <file name.exe>"

This is only SOME exe's. Particularly, older programs. Word, excel,
WordPerfect all work. Older apps don't.

I've tried the exe fixes on dougknox.com site and kelly's corner XP fix. But
still no luck.

Ideas?

that is probably due to registry errors.I advise you to download this software from http "://download.cnet.com/Free-Window-Registry-Repair/3000-2086_4-10606555.html" and then click on full scan and then fix errors .If it does not fix the problem, please reply.
