LOLOLOL

I looked at a Sony Vaio FW series and a MacBook Pro with the same exact specs (only difference was .6 inches of screen), and the Vaio cost $1400 while the same MacBook cost $2800.

What I find particularly interesting is when Microsoft includes a suite of simple media products with Vista or XP, it's criticized as filler causing the operating system to be bloated and overburdened with "crap". But if Apple does the same thing and puts a shiny sticker on it, it's suddenly "innovative features that work synchronously to act as a solution for all your needs" or some other stupid jargon.

Sorry Apple, a Mac is a PC. Just like a Dell is a PC. You just put a proprietary GUI on your system and a sticker with your logo and suddenly it's MAGIC. Sad how the public doesn't care much about fact. I could rip the anal glands out of a decomposing horse and sell it to people as jewelry that costs $50,000 an ounce if I market it properly. It has nothing to do with quality or the truth of things, it's all about how you can affect peoples' perceptions.

What a sad truth.

I can't fathom the thought of ever owning a Mac... I wouldn't be able to play (any of my games) or work (Autodesk 3ds Max.) I would just shoot myself in the head and put me out my Mac-owning misery.

The article is right though. You get a lot more for your money with a Mac. I think anyone who buys a PC is a chump. If I were to get a laptop, I'd probably choose a Mac, otherwise if you want an affordable desktop computer, you're better off building your own because big name computers like Dell or HP are overpriced and filled with so much junk that you're better off buying a separate system disk to completely wipe it clean.

I stand by my comments I have used PC's since DOS2.0 and believe me until XP there was never a bigger piece of cpsoftware why any sane person would think it was good was because they never used anything better.

As for the Vista idiot ever compare FPS between Vista and XP.
I have both in my PC and Vista eats at least 10FPS in games like WOrld in Conflict and Fear. I so don't tell me vista doesn't eat CPU.

Most MAC bashers have never used a MAC and the Idiot who claimed to have found a mac loaded with Viruses should know that other than two proof of concept they don't exist in the wild. So there is a liar who never touched a MAC. cookies are not viruses they are the nice liitle things that allow you to Post on this forum and go shopping at newegg. I hate when stupid anti virus programs target innocent cookies.

I am not a Apple fan I don't even own a Iphone or Ipod. I think I tunes is a rippoff.

Butt I have thrown up on a keyboard and created better code than microsoft. It is just stupid the way everything is done wrong.
Why you need thirty copies in memory of the same library. Smart operating systems load it just once and every program uses the same library. Speaking of dumb memory managment both XP and Vista have a little bug or I should say major memory flaw write a two gig file back and forth on your HD watch the memory fragment till windows crashes and eats your directory structure. IO is what an Operating system should be about. Not surfing the web that is an application. IO managment is where Windows failes like I said you never used anything better so you are ignorant on how a real OS should work..

The registry is a programmers nightmare and the twisted SOB who came up with that should be waterboarded. That is really the most wastefull and stupid way you can come up with to fix a simple problem.

MS should just blow up windows and start new. Copy other OS's the right way not just add a series of hack on the surface to mimick what other OS's do properly.

This writer, Jane McEntegart, always comes up with this kind of biased pro-apple article. One wonder if apple actually paid Toms to have her work here. Stop insulting the intelligence of the readers at this site. It's fine to highlight the advantages of Mac, but to continuously writing these articles without any critical thought involved is just pure disappointing. Go work at edibleapple or macrumor pls.

You have to remember who the MS & Mac ads are targeted at: mostly no one that ever comes to Tom's. There are a lot of sheep out there just waiting for the shepard. But I'm such a weinie. I bought a lawnmower rather then build my own..........

Apple also doesn't take into consideration that people also buy pcs for the gaming and pure mathematical power it has for calculations and such. Apple is just for surfing the internet and chatting, mixed in with some photo editing. Which pcs can also do. Besides who needs antivirus when u can get Norton for 30 days and it does everything for u. It can also be installed multiple times. I use Avast and norton with no problems, and they are freee! And they can be installed multiple times! Go windows

[citation][nom]RegistryFanboi[/nom]69camaroSS: What is the "infamous Windows registry nightmare"? I must have missed that in my many years of experience in the IT industry. In fact, I might go so far as to say that the registry "just works".[/citation]

Just works as it is slowly being corrupted with unused, uninstalled, poorly written parts of every program ever run on your computer. Then boom!!!!!! computer goes down. I'm glad you are in the IT industry, but if you don't know about the registry nightmare, don't waste my time. look it up and read about it on that thing we IT people call the internet! or keep using Windows, you'll find out eventually. It's really one of the fundamental differences between Windows and Unix based OS's.

[citation][nom]pile[/nom]Why would anybody buy a laptop to do encoding or gaming?[/citation]

Problem is, they don't even have a desktop that's worth a damn for gaming. Sure, you can get a Mac Pro with a single 4870 ($200 option), or quad GT 120's (huh?) for a cool $450 extra, but it still doesn't change the fact that nobody makes games for Macs. Nor does it change the fact that for the $3k+ it would cost for the Mac Pro (w/Quad SLI), I could build a comparable PC for under $1600. That's with 2x GTX275's though (because who the hell would want quad GT120's) and all top shelf components plus OS, and it comes with a free game.

Then after I lovingly build it with my own hands (not like some girl working in a factory in Hong Kong), I can proudly display it for friends, play lots of games, overclock and tweak things to my heart's content. Plus the PC can do anything that a Mac would, but probably faster since it was overclocked. Speaking of, with all the cash saved I could upgrade the cooling for more overclocking, buy lots more games, a 30" monitor, or a year's worth of FiOS. And I can easily upgrade things as I need for a reasonable price.

I've had to use OSX some at work, didn't like it. It seemed kinda "dummed down" to me. I suppose if I had a lobotomy I would love it. I like to tweak and play with things a lot though. I'm never really happy with just plugging something in and brainlessly using it the exact way someone else decided it should be used. If they released OSX for free I wouldn't use it.

So is a PC a bargain? Hell yeah! Even if the Mac had a competitive price I would still go with a PC.

[citation][nom]kgrach[/nom]Butt I have thrown up on a keyboard and created better code than microsoft.[/citation]

So what's the name of the operating system that you created? Or were you throwing up on your keyboard just now? If you're such a badass code writer then why aren't we all using your software instead of MS's?

Apple.... Shut up. Seriously, close your stupid mouth.

The average PC user doesn't spend a ton of money on special video or photo editing software anyhow.

And give me a break, some of the BEST Anti-Virus programs are FREE as it is. I've seen countless reviews of Anti-Virus programs and repeatedly find that Avast, AVG, and others are rated as well (or better) than commercial programs (Norton anyone?). Plus I find that the free Anti-Virus programs bog down my system LESS than the commercial software anyhow.

Besides, you can buy a PC laptop with equivalent internal hardware to the Apple laptops for like half the price.

And let's face it. Laptops are great for students and business people (who likely find their companies or schools run Microsoft OS's anyhow!). It's cheaper, and easier, to get a PC laptop than convert to a much more expensive Apple that isn't compatible with everything else.

My business runs Microsoft Server 2003, and runs new PCs from Dell. One of our employees who does advertising/marketing stuff for us was recently upgraded to a new all in one Apple desktop. She HATES it. It cost a ton, she doesn't understand the Apple OS, and none of the software she uses runs on it.

Parallels FTW... Windows XP running on her Apple all day long.

I think most of the commenters on this article give the average user waaaaaay too much credit. Most people still call a desktop either a hard drive or a modem. Yeah, we as enthusiasts can definitely download AVG Free and troubleshoot our own hardware issues. Most people can't. But I work at Best Buy, and I can tell you a lot of people can't, won't, and don't care to learn. So, we tell them we can sell them antivirus and put it on there for them and take all of the lovely crapware that comes packaged with computers off for $129.99 and I find most people jump on it once you explain that that is the reason their last computer ran so slow and was hardly worth using only after a year.

I've owned a MacBook for the last several years. It's really a great little machine. OSX had a look and feel for years that Windows wished it had. Vista tried to catch up, but fell short (crosses fingers and hopes that 7 isn't the bloated hog that Vista is) And no, I'm not a Mac, I've got my desktop that I built myself (e6750, 4GB G.Skill memory, EVGA 8800GT) so that I can do all my gaming. That being said, the average user is much less likely to run into a virus problem on a Mac computer I find. Apple releases weekly security updates for christssake! How many times does a Windows machine update its security without additional antivirus software? Maybe once a month?

Ms. McEntegart, last time I checked, a diagnostic at Geek Squad was only $69.99 (Still too much for someone who knows what their doing, but not for your average joe). Computer repair (Software, OS) is $129.99

Now, dont hate on me, but i defenitly think PCs are much better then macs at doing most things, but if your a person who has $1600 to spend, macbooks are pretty nice laptops...of course, i rather take my Sager to game.

if you are refuring to me, then you completely miss read wat I said. I siad worms not viruses, and apple's do get worms which are the same thing as a virus (basically)

err.. mac os is not immune to virii and it gets virii as well. also mac users have been buying antivirus software for several years already. what's the point of this article? I don't see one. a mac is a pc, just one that costs more than other pc's.

ok, say i spend $700 on an HP or whatever computer, and then i spend $60 on Kapsersky Internet Security, how is this going to make my PC experience as expensive as a Mac??

Even if I pay for the software to do photo / video stuff, I still have enough money left over to build my own PC and give the HP to my wife

Not to mention upgrading my PC is a lot cheaper too

And still have money left over for beer

I find it humorous that Apple is all bent out of shape, meow beeotches, suck it up Apple you started the BS ad war

69camaroSS: That kind of propaganda might work on clueless Mac users, but you're preaching to a choir full of people who actually know how to use Windows. I use Linux because I dislike Microsoft, but everybody knows that XP is 100% reliable, and Vista SP1 or later is almost as good.

I would not recommend Kaspersky. From my experience, it used to be good but I would recommend mcafee security suite, superantispyware, and malwarebytes antimalware. Those are very effective for me. I had problems with Kaspersky on some computers, acting like a resource hog. Possibly they alleviated that by now but for me it's good by Kaspersky forever. I doubt Kaspersky can find as many trojans/malware as the above programs and two of which are free.

I've used Kaspersky on 15 computers privately for the last 3 years, and I can say I've only once had a problem with it. Version 8 (current) bugged after my mom installed some spyware, and I had to reinstall it to fix the issue. And to do that I had to boot into failsafe and disable the kaspersky service first, but that's the only single problem I've had with it for 3 years. I can only recommend it. It's not perfect, but neither are any of the alternatives. At work we've just changed from CA Etrust to Fsecure - gone from aweful to slightly under par.... I don't know what products are good, but kaspersky is the best one I've tried.

Yeah we use CA Etrust at work, a really old version at that (it'll even run on win2k). Kaspersky used to do everything for me, for about a few months at least. I'm just glad there's some free alternatives these days. The only reason I have mcafee at home is because it is provided with comcast. It is very good, detects a lot of stuff, and has a really nice firewall. It even firewalled me out from the internet to my remote desktop. So I was impressed. It let me use my remote desktop on my LAN so I didn't even know it did that. Malwarebytes antimalware does most of the job for me anywhere I go, I just download it or install off USB stick I think it's about 1.3 megabytes and it cleans up so much stuff. I don't expect it to last forever but at least for the time being it is great and it is free (well shareware but at least it lets you update scan and most importantly clean unlike a lot of shareware products out there including kaspersky as I recall).

[citation][nom]keither5150[/nom]all 71 PC's that I take care of at work use AVG free edition as well.[/citation]

I don't know if anybody has already pointed this out (too lazy to read on to find out), but you can't use AVG free edition for business use. You're in violation of their license.

[citation][nom]FluckYou[/nom]69camaroSS: That kind of propaganda might work on clueless Mac users, but you're preaching to a choir full of people who actually know how to use Windows. [/citation]

Well Mr. FluckYou, you just made my point. YOU know how to use and maintain Windows! The average consumer doesn't, so where Windows may be 100% reliable for you (please!! that just means you don't deal with many computers), someone who doesn't know how to maintain their computer will have more issues with Windows than with OSX. That is precisely why Macs have value in the first place. That is why they aren't just regular computers. They are a closely monitored, closed system, built around a very stable platform with taylor made software. In the end, normal people will have less problems on that type of machine. They won't have to go searching for patches, registry cleaners, spyware detectors, free software etc. . . They won't have to wait for SP2 before their OS is stable. They'll just enjoy surfing the web and editing their home videos out of the box. I think it boils down to this: More freedom is not always good for all people.

Why are people so against that business model? There is a place for it. No one is keeping you from buying a PC, but comparing PC and OSX price-wise has to take in consideration the philosophy that Apple is built around. They are not the same, just because they have the same parts, no more than a Ford is the same as a Honda, they appeal to a different crowd.

And if Windows is so freaking reliable, why do most people on this forum want a crack at OSX? Seems like envy. Why was the biggest suggestion to Apple on the site "let us pay good money for your operating system?" "Licensee it to everyone." So they are willing to shell out $150 bucks for OSX, but not buy a computer from Apple. Why?? Because mommy we want to play games, build our own computer and not have to buy computers from the scary mean Apple man. Stop wining! Use Linux, and let Apple be Apple.

I bought a laptop to do word processing, surf the web, and listen to mp3's when I'm not at home.I can buy a 15.4" (a 17" screen is just too big to lug around), $400 notebook and install Ubuntu on it. That's the one thing I hate about ANY Apple ad. They think EVERYONE needs a computer to edit movies, record songs, and organize photos. There are people who actually use a computer for more than just that.

Despite the overwhelming urge to unleash a devastating attack of words against Mac... I would like to say that I personally think BOTH computers have something to offer everyone. I actually dont like the "lame", cookie cutter styling of PC laptops but I enjoy Windows in a whole shot. I ALSO like Mac OS as well. It is very fluid and well layed out. I know article isn't refering to any of this stuff... but EVERYONE else is throwing in their two cents about what they think is THIS or THAT.

69camaroSS: Are you like 10 years old or something? I believe the general consensus here is that Windows XP has been stable since about 2003. OSX has always had crap stability, Apple compensates by censoring bug reports on their forums i.e.: pretend there isn't a problem.
