me too....I think you just said too much about your AVG free usage....... beware knocks on the door~

The Apples Genius Bar are not the place you will want to go if you know how to fix "computer" problems. From what I have seen, it is a long line pack with people with sick computers and waiting for the person to help them. Some even told you it is better to schedule an appointment before came in. The Apples Genius Bar sound so familiar like my local hospital...next!...Dr Genius will now see you and follow me please.

PC = Virus
It not a question with a PC if you will get a virus but when your antivirus software is capable of detecting the beastie already roaming on your machine.
PC's should never ever be connected to the internet they are just not safe.

Macs are for people smart enought to know that PC's just suck.
Yes linux is safer than windows but anything in Linux becomes a research project. becuase version x.xx is diferent from linux x.x and no two commands use the same syntax. need help type man no that commands needs info but it was not written yet so you need user but that got broken in the latest release so you need to use program y but just so you know distro k uses a diferent command structure than your distro.
YOU FAIL!!!!!!

Yes you need a hyper fast PC becuase 95% of the machines recources are used for windows.
Most windows users are ignorant of what a real OS is like and don't know better. Try something like AOS4.1 and you will cry the next time you start windows.

All this deceit reminds me of the "FinallyFast.com!!!" commercials (with over a million sales!). Their program is listed on wiki rogue software http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_software and is known for barely working (its supposed to be a registry cleaner) and even at times making things worse. Totally not what the commercial implies... obviously. Yes people are really that stupid 'unknowing'. Anyways back to my point, I hate companies' ability to lie to the public and make money 'millions' off of it.

KRAcH... thanks for the good laugh... lol. One of biggest lies about Macs are that they are impervious to viruses. In fact, most Mac owners I know don't even have anti-virus software installed. I recently scanned my friends mac-pro and found 7 viruses and 200+ spyware and tracking cookies. Come-on... I've had 1 virus with vista and it was easily taken care of with AVG FRee.

AVG Free antivirus + Windows Live + Picasa fulfill all my needs. Plus, I can use a computer well enough to troubleshoot it myself - none of this Geeksquad stuff for me. So now what, Apple?

So, by extension, is a Mac a bargain if it doesn't do what I want?

Macs have great LOOKING designs and great software for SOME users. Macs have LOUSY designs for people who want to be able to switch a notebook hard drive to an X25 or X18 SSD and upgrade memory to 4GB; or to drop in a Geforce 260 so the girlfriend can stop complaining about WoW framerates.

Macs have crappy programming software, and a lousy selection of "free or nearly free, cool software" (mostly because of the crappy programming software, I surmise).

Antivirus is a stupid comparison. There are lots of great free programs out there (like AVG Free), and many terrific, yet very inexpesive suites out there (like Kaspersky). If you can't afford $30 a year for 3 computers, and don't like the free selections... well, go audition for American Idol or something.

Since Apple makes such tons of money on their iPods and iPhones, why don't they produce Macs at a break even point instead of squeezing a profit from them. They need more market share, more users, more devotees, so LOWER the price and move the merch, Mr. Jobs. You're swimming in money so you can well afford to prime the pump to really popularize these contraptions. Cut the price and you cut the legs out of the PC argument--except for some issues like software and parts swapping. Work on those concepts, too, Stevie, and you'll REALLY be king of the heap and Billy Boy will be a has-been. But, nobody in power is listening, or thinking.

Doesn't Microsoft get sued for bundling it's own utility software with Window's? Something about other software vendors not being able to compete because users won't go buy the software if it already come installed with the OS? I don't know, just a random thought.

[citation][nom]keither5150[/nom]In fact all 71 PC's that I take care of at work use AVG free edition as well.[/citation]

So you've just advertised to the world that your company pirates software, well done! (AVG Free is for home users only, work machines should have a licence)

thanks for getting the price wrong... seriously check your facts. A diagnostic is 69.99, and no the Apple Genius bar does do this! It is a full hardware scan. The 129.99 might be an anti-virus plus the install plus the optimization but other then that check your numbers. Just to let you know I do work at Geeksquad

Oh what about anti-virus for a Mac http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/04/evidence-suggests-first-zombie-mac-botnet-is-active.ars

I mean I simply can't justify paying 2k on a 15 inch screen... maybe that's just me

apple is totally talking bs.
Think about this, I spent 800 bucks on my near-2 year old computer, and it has quite a bit of horsepower compared to a Mac Pro, or simply just Macs.
Let's see the specs of my own-custom built comp.
C2D E4300 3.2ghz 400mhz fsb.
2 gigs of ddr2 800 ram 4-4-4-12 timings.
P5K motherboard, 320GB sata hdd, oh and umm, Nvidia 8600GT.
What can apple get us?
I bet spending 300 bucks more won't even get me a system with those specs.
Apple, get real with your prices, then I'll buy your products, or else I'm not gonna even spend a penny on your products.
What is the ending result? A "custom built" PC is a Bargain!

I've had a computer in my families house for the last 8+ years (we got one way after most people), and we have yet to pay for any geeksquad type of service. PC users can either fix their own computer, have the ability to learn how, or know someone who can for them.

Wait guys, I've got it... How about this combination:

Kubuntu
Gimp
OpenOffice
No Antivirus
No Firewall

and anything else you could ever want, free and open-source, through Adept package manager?

*renewed hatred for Apple after spending last weekend fixing my ex-gf's MacBook*

[citation][nom]MafiaAce[/nom]Hasn't apple ever heard of open source software?Oh wait, they love to stomp on that stuff...Everything I need to do on a PC can be accomplished with free, effective software which is updated constantly by a dedicated community of users.[/citation]

It actually makes me laugh for you to think Apple not embracing open source software ... hell more than 50% of Mac OS X is comprised of opensource software ... even the OS kernel has been opensourced by Apple. Microsoft is the one that's the antithesis of open source.

Anyways, I build my own PCs, but when it comes to laptops, I have to side with Apple on this one. Usually I need a quick UNIX machine since I don't really have that much time to maintain a Linux install, so the first thing that came into my mind is a Macbook. Another thing that makes my Macbook worth it is the multitouch trackpad, it's a godsend. Having an LED-backlit display and DDR3 memory sealed the deal. Sure, the white Macbooks don't last that long, but my aluminium Macbook that replaced my white Macbook has outlasted its predecessor. Heck, I got the replacement for free courtesy of Apple because I'm a student and because I'm covered by AppleCare.

If I compare my dad's Fujitsu laptop with mine. He paid $1100 CAD (after conversion from HKD) while I paid $1500 tax and AppleCare incl. My laptop is lighter, sucks in less battery, thinner and best of all, it runs a UNIX-certified OS. I'd take design and after sales service over a cheap hardware that I would either pay to fix or have to fix 'em myself.

Hell, I'm so fed up with fixing Dells (which has been is the most fixed laptop brand I've ever dealt with in my high school and its market share at my highschool is only 3rd to HP and Apple) that I basically refuse any Dell hardware service requests from my classmates and friends.

If it's worth it in the end, the initial investment is better than the frustrations you'll get in the long run. Something that neither company will advertise. I'm a happy Mac user and glad that I didn't cheap out on my investment.

I'm a computer science student and I'm both a PC and a Mac. So eat it Microsoft, I'm better than those who are PCs because I am both!

Definitely the wrong place to talk about geek squads or anti virus programs costing you $$$. There are so many free AV programs out there that you could literally spend the whole lifespan of your Windows PC just hopping from one trial to another, without ever spending a single cent. This is, of course, assuming you'd NEED one in first place (most people in here don't).
Stupid comment by Apple, yeah, pretty much the norm. I'm so sick of these fruity news, yet for some reason it never gets old to bash the cuppertino company.

Getting more hits this way THG?

... xe-xe... for all AVG free edition uzers, THX for giving me work... if you don't have at least a licensed copy of Bitdefender or Kaspersky, you don't have a antivirus... Tomshardware should maybe do a review of antiviruses too...

... i think, that tha premium for apple is tha software, tha full bundle already in tha box... tha one thing i don't go apple, except iPhone, iz that they don't have a AMD option...
