[citation][nom]MafiaAce[/nom]Hasn't apple ever heard of open source software?Oh wait, they love to stomp on that stuff...Everything I need to do on a PC can be accomplished with free, effective software which is updated constantly by a dedicated community of users.[/citation]
It actually makes me laugh for you to think Apple not embracing open source software ... hell more than 50% of Mac OS X is comprised of opensource software ... even the OS kernel has been opensourced by Apple. Microsoft is the one that's the antithesis of open source.
Anyways, I build my own PCs, but when it comes to laptops, I have to side with Apple on this one. Usually I need a quick UNIX machine since I don't really have that much time to maintain a Linux install, so the first thing that came into my mind is a Macbook. Another thing that makes my Macbook worth it is the multitouch trackpad, it's a godsend. Having an LED-backlit display and DDR3 memory sealed the deal. Sure, the white Macbooks don't last that long, but my aluminium Macbook that replaced my white Macbook has outlasted its predecessor. Heck, I got the replacement for free courtesy of Apple because I'm a student and because I'm covered by AppleCare.
If I compare my dad's Fujitsu laptop with mine. He paid $1100 CAD (after conversion from HKD) while I paid $1500 tax and AppleCare incl. My laptop is lighter, sucks in less battery, thinner and best of all, it runs a UNIX-certified OS. I'd take design and after sales service over a cheap hardware that I would either pay to fix or have to fix 'em myself.
Hell, I'm so fed up with fixing Dells (which has been is the most fixed laptop brand I've ever dealt with in my high school and its market share at my highschool is only 3rd to HP and Apple) that I basically refuse any Dell hardware service requests from my classmates and friends.
If it's worth it in the end, the initial investment is better than the frustrations you'll get in the long run. Something that neither company will advertise. I'm a happy Mac user and glad that I didn't cheap out on my investment.
I'm a computer science student and I'm both a PC and a Mac. So eat it Microsoft, I'm better than those who are PCs because I am both!
