Best free antivirus?

My Norton 3-month trial recently expired and I would like to get a free av to keep virus definitions up to date. I've heard a lot about AVG and a friend told me about Kasperski(spelling?).

Which is known to be best? (obviously open to other suggestions)

I use free AVG on all my systems and it seems to work pretty well.

Avast or AVG are the two best free anti virus programs, without bloat. either one will do there both just as good.
