What is everyone's take on burning in a CPU? Do you believe it works or is it just a myth? I've read many articles refuting it as well as backing it up.

I pretend to know what I'm talking about.

Whether it works or not - you can at least test for stability.

Well I have been doing it and I am currently at 1.18v on my 3700+. What's amazing is that it passes prime95 for hours at this voltage. Is this a really good chip or is this normal? I have my ballistix @ 2-2-2-5 @ 2.6v. I guess I'll go lower with the vcore till I get instability, notch it up one, then run prime for a few days and sacrafice my first-born to the overclocking gods.

I'd rather see how low I can get the Vcore at stock, and work on an overclock from there.

Does f@h stress as much as the prime95 torture test, becuase that is what I use. Do I even need to go as far as the torture test or just run prime95 normally?

Haha thats what I always figured thanks for reassuring it. I am using f@h but haven't lately. No WU and at 150/500 frames. Don't worry I'll be contributing more.

To be honest, I really don't know. I've never been convinced that Prime95 really tortures. It's good for a burn in test, sure, but torture? I don't know. F@H is probably just as good at torture. (Possibly better because it'll also activate your network.)

If you really want to torture a system though then you're better off with highly tailored programs. I believe there was one called Toast a while back. I'm not sure what (if any) such torture programs exist today.

Prime95 does totures with the toturing option.
I know. I've used it. But the question is, how well does it really torture? Is it tailored to a P3? To a P4? To a K7? To a K8? How well profiled is it to each and every CPU? Or does it just use one general code path for all CPUs? If it is general, then it definately isn't torturing as well as a tailored program could.

If you just want maximum heat production then use Toast.
I haven't even looked up Toast in ages. Wasn't it designed for K7? What's it like today?

Well running F@H now on campus and will return in two days. I'm kind of getting sick of this burning in stuff and dont' really care so I think I'll just run it at 2.6 gHz @ 1.475 v .... maybe run something like 3-3-3-8 at 2.8 v etc. Will get back to you on the progress of that.
