Cannot access display settings on compaq laptop

i hope someone will help me
i cannot access display settings on my compaq laptop
i'm trying to connect it to my digital tv have vga cable plugged in
shows start up on tv but will not display anything after
tv says not supported mode

Are you trying to display something on your laptop on the TV? If yes, try F7 to enable the external monitor.
