Question cpu overheating and cooling problems

Hey everyone, I purchased a new CPU not too long ago with a Corsair H60x, originally the cooler worked fine (I think) but when I turned off the computer and turned it back on the cooling just magically got worse. My idle temps are incredibly high (usually sitting on 80 idle with nothing running) and get extremely hot when playing a game (91+). I went back to the store where I purchased the radiator from thinking it was faulty and exchanged it for a new one, I put on an entirely new thermal paste and made sure I used the correct seating and everything but it still ended up being just as bad. The heat gets to a point where it's damn near unsafe for me to hover my skin around my computer.

Here are my specs
AMD Ryzen 9 5900x (CPU)
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 (GPU)
Corsair H60X (CPU Cooler)
ASUS Prime B450M-A (MOBO)

Also as a note, I installed the Icue app and tweaked my fans to go as fast as they could (yes I purchased new fans too to see if it would be fixed and made sure they were all compatible with the Icue app) and nothing fixed it. I assumed that my purchase and investment into this new CPU cooling would make my CPU run at good temps but it seems like I was wrong and may need to invest in new CPU cooling (maybe). Please let me know if my cooling should be better or if I should invest in something new.

It should run quite a bit cooler than 80 deg. when at idle. Does your BIOS show CPU temp? If so boot into the BIOS and report the idle temp in there before booting into the OS.

thanks for the reply, when i cold boot my computer and enter the bios it climbs all the way up to 80 degrees in a few minutes and continues climbing from there, a few minutes after that it even hits 90 degrees. mind you this is in the bios sitting there doing nothing.

Did you install the new cpu and cooler? Have you made sure the cooler was installed correctly and wired to the correct headers?
Also take the side cover off the PC case and monitor temp in bios, and while you are there, check that the voltage is correct for the CPU.
Inside windows, run HWMonitor and check the speed of the CPU cores at iand fans at idle, to check the load on both.

  • I did install the new CPU and cooler.
  • The cooler is installed and connected to the iCUE Commander (for the lighting) and the CPU fan header for the power.
  • Temp in bios with the side cover off still does the same, climbs all the way up to 85c.
  • The voltage (should be) correct for the CPU, its at 1.35.
  • The pump is on 2051 RPM, the speeds of the CPU cores and fans at idle are fairly normal (I believe), I'm not really a big PC guy so I could not tell you, but I'll send a image instead of my HWMonitor.
PS, the temperature is at 80.3c now with only firefox open and the side cover open.

just found the issue, turns out ICUE uninstalled its self leaving my fans running and its lowest possible RPM, i put my fans onto its max rpm which is 1850 and it cooled down to 50c. thank you for trying to help

Another item to check. On most installations the iCUE software tool has a feature unusual for AIO systems. You are allowed to choose the speed of the PUMP, which does impact cooling. Try setting that to full pump speed and see if that improves cooling. The impact MAY only be noticed at high workloads when the rad fan needs to run max also.

yeah its listed as fan #2 on my ICUE software, i have it to the max it can go though as a precuation, thank you.
