+1

It gets worse if they compare the 13'' macbook's to any other high end laptop w\ better specs for less money.

[citation][nom]kristoffe[/nom]apple laptops are made for people who believe in excess and have very large ego problems. our world sits around us crumbling, and people starving, stealing, dying, yet people have the audacity to purchase 2 or 3 apple media products and laim they are necessities. some of these people are 'urban planners'. boo. save some of that money and help yourself or those in need.[/citation]

I do dislike Apple but... Apple computers are for people who like the Apple computers.

When you like something enough, it's price that you paid for is exactly the price it was worth, for that person. Free market for the win.

If you want to make a Toyota = PC Lexus = Mac car analogy, then it would be more like this:

The Toyota and Lexus have the exact same parts and the Toyota can be upgraded to have all the amenities of the Lexus. The quality is equivalent.

However, the Lexus costs twice as much because it has a glowing logo on the hood, only comes in black or silver, and can only be driven on <5% of the roads available (software).

But I'm sure a 'Lexus' owner would claim that those roads are better than all other roads so that doesn't matter to them.

[citation][nom]cyprod[/nom]Fixed that for you.Really funny you chose those two, because it is quite accurate for mac vs PC. They really are the same thing with different badges, just one costs more.[/citation]

Lexus is the luxury branch of Toyota.. They are more expensive not because of the logo but the built quality.

[citation][nom]revelationsr[/nom]why cant we all just get along ... it is very important that there are macs in this world .... it alows us to spot the person who is compensating for something out of a crowd ....[/citation]

I think it was called Windows Vista, battery life and weight when I bought my mac.

[citation][nom]superblahman123[/nom]Other things to note (that aren't always advertised) are things like what the cases are made of (most Apples are aluminum frames), energy comsumption, heat dissipation (IMO, this is not stressed enough in ads), and the deeper specifics such as the memory type and speed.[/citation]

I would say if you told 90% of computer users what their RAM speed was, they would ask you what RAM was. They usually don't put specifics such as those because most users don't care and/or know what they are referring to.

[citation][nom]smeker[/nom]Right... I guess you did not hear about their recent design problem with their break system... They had to recall many cars and spent billions of dollars in damage control and image recovery....Use Google if you dont read newspapers....[/citation]

Probably because they own a bunch of 15 year old Toyotas the ones that were made with build quality in the details of the car. Unlike the new ones where they got concerned about fender gaps and the interior looking fresh and being "as nice as a BMW" so they cheaped out on their throttle by wire tech, their brakes, and on their trucks used a very cheap cable for their spare tire holders causing the tire to eventually snap the cable and bounce along behind the driver.

It's funny though, noone ever thinks even after being trained this in a school driving course (that the old fart driving probably sat through, since half to 3/4 of the problem happened to people 45+) that the solution to a runaway car is, simply, to turn the ignition to the off position.

I can see you've never driven a lexus....

This is the dumbest statement I have ever read on Tom's, and that is saying a lot. Do you live in a nice home, with running water and electricity? Do you own a car? I see you are using a computer to make this post. You could have taken some of the money you spend on all of these things and other stuff like cable TV, clothes, dining out or internet service and given it to all the people of the world that have none of the previously mentioned luxuries.

How dare you, a person that HAS try to speak for people that DON'T have. You are exploiting their suffering for your personal agenda with no real regard for the human beings themselves.

I do what I can, like donations to children's hospitals and other charities and we set our computers and game consoles to folding @ home when we can, the wife volunteers her time to 4-H which all of our children are a part of, but I will be the first to admit that I do the most I can for the wife and three children first and foremost.

I wish I could be the person that could give up all we have and go do volunteer work in a area filled with impoverished people, and I respect those that do so, but being older now with children I would never give up the life we have built to drag them off to some other are and force my cause on them.

I have nothing but respect for the man and his family living out of an old station wagon and doing odd jobs for small change and swallowing his pride to visit soup kitchens and shelters to keep them healthy. I don't respect the man that uses that situation to push a cause or agenda from the comfort of his living room.

[citation][nom]omenowl[/nom] What is not factored into the cost though is the tech support. I would love to see the comparison between customer satisfaction between Apple where you can call or go to a local store and other OEMs who send you off to India.[/citation]

Simulated Phone Conversation

User: Yeah, my Mac seems to have a problem and it keeps crashing on me.
Mac Tech Support: You are holding it wrong.

A Corvette ZR1 is just as fast as a Ferrari Enzo. You can get the ZR1 for a fourth of the price, but if you can afford the enzo, and will have to spend a lot of time in the interior, then why the hell would you get the ZR1?

Macs and PCs are comparable to this. I buy a PC because I can't justify spending over $1000 on a laptop or desktop unless I built it myself. However, I would love to have one, and I am always impressed by their battery life, customer service (I have an iPhone) and their interfaces. It's all just completely relative to the user, but you have to admit Apple puts it in a nicer overall package.

[citation][nom]smeker[/nom]Its interesting there is nothing about built quality. Both Toyota and Lexus cars have wheels, doors, seats, and engine but Lexus is Lexus.Salute![/citation]
um....FYI they don't have the same wheels, doors, engines, plugs, gaskets, transmissions etc. two totally different manufacturers, the dell is showing the exact same hardware in their product as apple.

This only compare h/w. don't forget the apple software r way better. it's worth the premium.

back to h/w, in my opinion, dell's quality is below par.

You are wrong my friend

I think the main difference between Mac and PC users is if you look at a customers perspective. PC users are open and willing to call a PC over-priced crap when it's over-priced crap and Mac users just smile and cringe as they receive their bill from Steve Jobs.

As far as "Built" quality is concerned, I usually try to avoid companies who underpays and provides poor work conditions for their employees (Foxconn). If what I've read is true then Foxconn makes motherboards for both Dell and Mac computers... so neither company really is on my radar.

Also, one thing that is never mentioned in any spec sheet for any brand is also Heat Output. Have any of you ever sat with a Macbook Pro in your lap... the thing gets uncomfortably hot very fast. My gf burnt my stomach when she put it on me while i was laying down.

Dell: Plastic
Apple: Aluminum Unibody

Dell: AMD Dual Core
Apple: Core 2 Duo

Dell: ATI 3200HD (which my netbook has)
Apple: NVIDIA 320M

... the list goes on and on. They are comparing rotten Apples to Apple. So what, it's cheaper, just by looking at the specifications and the build quality you can tell why it is cheaper. It's called common sense.

[citation][nom]smeker[/nom]Its interesting there is nothing about built quality. Both Toyota and Lexus cars have wheels, doors, seats, and engine but Lexus is Lexus.Salute![/citation]

I only buy Foxconn motherboards when I am building a machine for a customer on a really tight budget.

[citation][nom]omenowl[/nom]I tried to customize it and it gave me this message"We're sorry, but we are unable to process your request. The product or offer you are attempting to locate is no longer available." Way to go Marketing advertise a product I can't buy. The time to buy a mac is when they refresh the line else you have 3-6 months of price drops by other OEMs. At the end of the day buy what you like and enjoy because it is something you will probably use every day for the next few years. What is not factored into the cost though is the tech support. I would love to see the comparison between customer satisfaction between Apple where you can call or go to a local store and other OEMs who send you off to India.[/citation]
Tech support with Apple?
They charge $100 to replace a battery in a iphone. A battery that's quick and easy to replace for $20...

Wow, a bunch of fanboys commenting on this article. Mac systems have their benefits (general laptop design, minimal spyware/adware so far, easy os) and Windows systems have its benefits (non proprietary hardware, cheaper systems, huge software selection). Choose what you want and quit worrying about what someone else prefers.

Personally, I love the design of the macbooks and how the OS uses the design directly in its software. But I also love Windows systems for software and ability to build my own desktop. It's great to have the option of either.

Oh, and if they are going to compare the specifications of it's new systems to Apple, they should really use the correct and current information:

Apple 21.5" iMac (1920-by-1080 resolution)
3.2GHz Intel Core i3
4GB (two 2GB) memory (DDR3)
1TB hard drive
8x double-layer SuperDrive
ATI Radeon HD 5670 with 512MB

$1499.99

thats like saying that why would you buy a 100k viper when you can get a 50k DODGE SRT with the same engine and trans(modified)well it has the same hardware right....NOT!!! "ITS NOT THE SAME" it will be a different experience.

Battery life, size, weight, screen resolution, OS, quality feeling to the touch. All that counts too.

Don't criticize and judge a product just because you can't afford it. of course I can make any car(PC) that perform faster than a Ferrari(Apple) with a fraction of the price but if you drive both you will feel the difference on quality build and overall performance.

BTW I have a total of 6 computers at home including a iMac, 4 (Dell, HP& Toshiba) Laptops and a Windows Home Server. I'm not a apple fan. Yes they are way OVERPRICE, offer old hardware (intel i3,i5& i7 family was out for a year before they implemented them on their computers), but I have to admit They Are Nice Computers!. If you can't see that you are focusing on the price instead of the product.

what the recent comparisons between windows and mac means is that the windows portion of the industry is feeling a little threatened by mac. otherwise why would they care all of a sudden? but this is good. if the windows side can pressure apple into making better products, then the windows guys will have to make even better ones and the consumer wins.
