dsl splitting help

Can someone point me to a resource for dsl splitting? Specifically, what hardware i need and how to setup nat.

If you want to send me an email describing how to do the whole process that would be great, but that is a lot of writing and am not expecting that.

Thanks

I didn't know that you can do this via hardware but there is a solution when your pcs are networked.

If you do mean having more than one machine on a single ip,
you could get a cable/dsl router. I know all the Netgear ones have NAT and they also have some of them with 4 ports.
You can take a look at them <A HREF="http://www.netgear.com/categories.asp?xrp=4&yrp=12" target="_new">Here</A>

Yes, We have one DSL line in use. I am not 100% sure on my terminology, but here is how I understand it. \

I need to make sure that the dsl box in place is a bridge not just router. Then hook up a switch with Nat to that box. Then plug the pcs into the switch with a proper internal ip scheme.

What do I need to do with the Nat or is it automatic? What is a proper internal ip scheme? ( I understand the system, just what what specific numbers may need to be)
Am I on the right track or completely off?

*** Linksys DSL/Cable Router - around $90 thru 229 depending how many plugins you want..
Chech out...

http://www.linksys.com/

I've got the 8-port. It's so easy to install it supprised me! Plug in the DSL modem and it just knows who's at the other end. Other than using the default setup I had to select the PPPOE checkbox and put in my userid/pasword. Thats about it!, it connects and tells you the DSN at the other end... Wow - plug in shared PC's into the ports...

Its got a DHCP server builtin to it...
or if ya use static ip's on you personal LAN,
on each client connection add gateway pointing to the router(default is 192.168.1.1). Also add primary/secondary DSN( you get that from the Router status screen after it connects)

Its a breeze..
Much faster than the RideWay Proxy server setup i used before getting the LinkSys Router/Switch...

Killer, and it just doesn't get much easier!

No. You don't need any of that crap. At the most you'll need a router- but that's it. If your using peer to peer networking, read this post: <A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/network/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=750#750" target="_new">http://forumz.tomshardware.com/network/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=750#750</A>

That 'crap' can be a good thing sometimes...

If you use ICS, lets hope it's a stable machine that you never touch/upgrade (and always leave on) otherwise, if it's down, all your nodes are down.

I use the linksys router and I find it's very good, easy to use/setup, and very affordable (about twice the price of a good NIC - $100-$150). You can always leave it on, and any computer hooked up to it can use the net (regardless of the status of any other machines used on the network).

The only reason you wouldn't want to use a hardware router like the Linksys is because you couldn't afford one. And if you have more than one computer, $150 shouldn't break you.

ICS does the trick, but it's in no way ideal...

Agreed - Ya don't neeed that crap - and not even a router!

Peer-to-Peer Networking...No router...
And RideWay Proxy server! - Thats it!

(RideWay is a free download from the internet)
http://www.itserv.com/ridewayfamily.asp

All ya need is 1 pc connected to a dsl/cable fast connection and put RideWay on it... I used this setup for about a year with no problems. Stable! It does require that one pc to be on for other to share but works well...

There are Crackz for the free rideway download demo. I demo'ed, cracked - and when all proved to work well bought the $100 Unlimited lisense.

RideWay's a good little proxy server... Has served me well. And is still my backup connection when BelSouth DSL goes down. I can still dial up and proxy from it!!! At least I still got somethin..

But the crap(linkSys Router/Switch) sure is sweet!!!
