Hello everyone!

Just joined the team today thanks to this thread ;) !

I was just wondering how to get F@H to use more then 14% of my i7. It only stays on 1 core. I've gone into configure the cpu usage of F@H but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

What you actually want for an i7 is the SMP2 A3 client. :)
You can Google for the folding@home SMP client and SMP2 for historical info. The A3 is the latest and greatest SMP2 client and on an i7, it produces a lot of points per day. :sol:
Look over the client and the installation procedure and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. :D
Oh, forgot to mention, you will find the SMP2 A3 client in the windows high performance clients. :p

+1

Ok, i think i found our inspiration of what we should all do. :D Either that, found our doom.

I'm curious- Do more in what way? I used to run 3 clients on 1 machine all for same project- 1 for each cpu core and 1 for the gpu.

FYI you can utilize both or multiple CPU cores using single CPU clients. You set each client to use a different machine id- and so you have 1 client running for each core- works fine.

the way F@H is coded it doesn't fully utilize hd4xxx/5xxx cards, where as the other 2 projects can, so i get more done for the projects

*drool* *replaces the bucket underneath mouth* *drool*
Now that is some serious folding lol. I think I'll just stick with my GTX 280 tyvm. Maybe we could get some people with GTX 480s to sacrifice their card for F@H :p .

You didn't say what dual core processors you were running, at least not on this page
Anyway, the SMP2 client will get you a basket load more points than 2 singles no mater what processor you are running. :D

Yeah not on this page, on previous pages i mentioned but i have multiple dual core laptops in my house so even looking them up would still ask questions.

Anyway first one T2390 Pentium dual core 1.86Ghz and the other is T4300 Pentium dual core @ 2.1Ghz.

Yeah, i have tried out the SMP a few times did the like the bigger points but there just some WU's that take way to long to process for my liking on a laptop (like 2-3 days). If it was a dual+ core desktop, i wouldn't mind to much as there typically more powerful so they can get SMP WU's done a little quicker.

But with a laptop, i only feel conferrable leaving them running for about 2 days max non stop before i stop them for the night or 2.

Now i could bring in other computers i have mentioned in the past, (except for the celly laptops. Much to slow to be any real benefit) although im sure the rest of my family would like to be able to use a computer without folding@home slowing down games and not have to pay a huge electric bill from running all of them.

Hey just recently joined the team, i have my 275 already running the client in the background when i'm not playings games, i was wondering about the SMP, where would i download that, and what configuration would i set it for my i7 920

Welcome to the team! :D

To answer your questions,

First read the guide on how to set up SMP. here is the Mpich guide as you have a 64 bit os.

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinSMPGuideMPICH

Requirements are,

1. You must have a computer with at least a recent dual core processor or better to run the SMP client. This also means older single core processors will not meet the very short work unit deadlines. If after installing this high performance client on an older dual or and older quad core system, and the client is not meeting the work unit deadlines, please uninstall the SMP client, and switch to using one or more instances of the CPU and/or GPU client.

2. Before installing this client on Windows XP, you are required have installed the Microsoft .NET framework v2.0 (or newer), if not installed already. You can download the package from Microsoft. Windows Vista already includes the necessary .NET package by default so it is not necessary to update .NET in Windows Vista.

You shouldn't have to worry about this

3. Windows XP Service Pack 3 is strongly recommended. If you don not have this service pack installed, the client may not run properly.

this wont matter for you.

4. The Windows user account that will be running the SMP client MUST have a password. The Windows user account that will be instaling the SMP client MUST have and have enough administrator rights. Blank passwords will not work and you must have a password only with those valid characters : A-Z, a-z and 0-9. Special characters should not be used to avoid any potential issues. If you change the password of the Windows user account, you need to run the install.bat file again. Note the password used to install is encrypted in the registry and not transmitted to the Stanford servers.

This is an absolute must.

After reading the guide on how to setup,

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther click on this and head down the page to SMP 6.29 beta for MPICH (32-bit or 64-bit) and download.

Please follow the guide as best you can. it really good guide although if you missed something, you may have to start the process from the begging.

So if you get on trying to figure something out in the guide, just ask us.

Now while you are here, might as well mention while tell you when you finally reach the client configuration, when you see this
" Set -advmethods flag always, requesting new advanced scientific cores and/or work units if available (no/yes) [no]?"

say yes. That will make your client grab the latest "Core a3" WU, which i have read that they run really good on core i7 cpus and earn quite a bit of points.

Other than that, i think the guide has you covered.

Hmmm.... [:grahamlv:3]

I been thinking, Why is this thread in the Cpu & component section?

Wouldn't this be better in the Software section? As folding@home is run on gpu's and ps3 as well.
