gaming system with Pentium D 805

Hi ,

i want a system for middle gaming performance not so high ! according to my collected information finally find this one :

CPU Pentium D 805

MotherBoard ECS TA 965P

VGA 7600GS DDR3 256MB Or 7600GS DDR2 512MB

RAM 2*512 DDR2 667

HARD Hitachi 80GB SATA2

PSU 380W REAL

So , i call you for helping me about choose right gaming system .
1-can i overclock P D 805 with this ECS board to 3 or 3.2 ?
2-which one is better now P4 541 3.2 or PD 805 ?
3-which VGA card is more sutable ?
4-buying extra fan/heatsink is important like Thermaltake golden orb2 ?

at the end, i have plan upgarde to core2 about 6 or 7 month later . thank you for your helping . be cool :) :wink: :?:
 
1. The board is not a good overclocker, Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, Intel, and Abit MBs overclock well.

2. It is worth saving up 80 bucks or so and going with the Core 2 Duo E6300, it will smoke any of the processors you mention. If you live near a Fry's Electronics store, watch the ads, they have been offering 169-189 dollar E6300/ECS combos for the past couple of months. You may want to try the online store. I would not recommend either CPU you are suggesting for gaming.

3. This is worth considering some time and investing as much as you cn afford, ATI X1600 or higher will give you a great gaming peformance, nVidia 7600 or higher will do the same.

4. If you go Core 2 Duo with an ECS motheboard, then type of HSF is not quite a critical. If you go 805 D or Pentium 4, then a good HSF is essential. The orb will work in either case.

4 great points; the 805 was a great deal 4-5 months ago but now is history, simply the worst dualcore, at the dawn of the quadcore era.

What about Pentium D 920 or 915 if i can purchas it with 120$ ?
we have 2 choice

1-Pentium D 805 + Thermaltake Golden orb2 fan

2-Pentium D 920 (with stock fan) ? ? ? ?


unfurthonately my budget is little and cant pay more cash for core 2 due !
 
If you definitely can't afford a C2D, get an Athlon 64 system instead. The Pentium D is based upon the old Netburst architecture and its biggest weakness is gaming. The Pentium D will be steamrollered by any C2D system out there for gaming and will also be very soundly beaten by any Athlon 64 based system as well.

Quite frankly, the Pentium D is a poor and obsolete processor. Avoid.
 
hmm its a tough one since a pentium at $120 with the orb2 would only cost $20 less than a C2D. if you absolutely cant afford the c2d then i think the 805 would be your best bet, pentium wise, although AMD would be a much better choice. dont take my word for it on the pentium thing though, i dont know much about the pentium line of procs. (besides the fact they put off more heat than a furnace and get absolutely destroyed in benchs by a c2d and most amd procs.)
edit: well it looks like Trippynet beat be too the post. oh well...
 
So . according to your suggestion AMD athlon64 AM2 is on the other hand . please look at this that i choosed :

It maybe more sutable for gaming rather than PD 805 or 920 ?
 
For a gaming system, that's definitely a more powerful setup. It's not a dual core chip, but for now most games don't utilise the second core anyway. It's the better buy IMO if you're planning on going for a C2D in a years time or so.

Yes, if you can find a X2 3600+ it should be around $125.

maybe i can not find x2 3600 around 125$ ! ! !

so , if i find 920 around 120$ or amd 3500 around 95$ i must choose which one ?

for Gaming and watching movie Exactly ?
 
If you don't multitask that much, the AM2 3500+ may be a better choice for a little while, however, you can even take a 3000+ or a Sempron to spare some money for a dualcore in the near future.
 
I dont agree with some of hte posters here.

I have a d805 running at 3.4Ghz with a Golden Orb 2 for cooling. I built the system almost half a year ago, so the core2 was not yet available - at the time it was the best price/performance option. If needed, I can run it as high as 3.8Ghz - and thats from a <100$ processor.

Whereas an athlon alternative is also a good choice, and is fairly cheap to assemble now - your options for upgrade are limited. The d805 stock performance is rather laughable, but overclock it to a 166FSB (or higher if you have a decent fan) and you performance on par with the top model in that line (d840) or higher. Pairing the d805 with a p965 based chipset mobo will give you a decent system NOW (provided you overclock), as well as the option to upgrade to Core2 when you feel your computer is just too slow.

Right now I'm running a

d805@ 3.4Ghz with an Nforce4 based mobo (Ni8 SLI)
2*512mb Corsair XMS2 (synchronous with fsb)
evga 7900GTO (stock speed for now)


I can tell you honestly that there is no game (except of course, Oblivion) where the performance of my PC does not satisfy me. Sure, if I had an E6400 running at 3 Ghz instead of my d805, I might have had 83FPS while playing FEAR instead of 66.
Currently, very few games are more CPU than GPU dependent, so your video card will always be the one holding oyu back. In fact, I first bought an EVGA 7600GT, thinking it's a decent card - and it was ! But sadly even with my d805 my video card was the one holding me back in games like FEAR or Company of Heroes.

I am not about to recommend a dxxx series dual core over a C2D, but I can tell you with all honesty that a computer with an x6800 and a 7600gs will be a much worse gaming machine than a computer with a pentium 4 3Ghz and a 7900GT. It's true, some games are more CPU intensive, but the GPU is always the more important factor.

The bottom line, in my opinion, is this. Get yourself the best video card you can afford with your budget (the x1950pro or the 7900GS can both be found for well under 200$ nowadays, and offer very decent performance; also look out for 1900xt's and 7900GTO on sale, but those are getting rare). Then find yourself a motherboard supporting Core2Duo (I suggest one based on the p965, as it has proved to be a good overclocker - Gigabyte or Asus, and possibly Foxconn are all reasonable options). If you're low on cash when you get to the CPU choice, your performance will not suffer significantly if you opt for an overlocked d805 instead of a core2. You really need a monster of a graphics card to take advantage of all the processing power offered by a high end core2, and since you're probably not in the market for the likes of a 8800GTX just yet, I think you can get away with a cheaper CPU for now.

ok step by step my future gaming system can be shap and ready !

i can reduce CPU to AMD 3200 AM2 and on the other hand purchase better memory DDR2 with buss 800 ! like this :

AMD 3200 athlon64

MEmory ddr2 bus 800 2*512 G.Skill

or already use previous system :

AMD 3500 athlon 64

memory ddr2 bus 667 2*512 Apacer

dont listen to that BS i have the 805 not even overclocked (overclocks to 3.6 GHZ on an ecs motherboard easy with stock cooling and not even raising voltage) same graphicss ram hard drive...etc and i play all games on high settings at 1200/700 res!

stick with the original idea itll work awesome i have same system so how cant it work? :?:

805 is not history it still owns i have yet to have a program make it reach 100% cpu usage! :lol:
 
The Pentium D805 is NOT CRAP! I built a D805 that is running@ 3.6GHz earlier this year when the C2D was way to expensive.

It runs like a dream and can do whatever I want it to. I play Guild Wars @ 1280x1024 with an ATI AIW X800XL and don't have any issues whatsoever. I can also encode video and audio while watching TV on my computer.

Is it the greatest? No. It runs hot when I am pushing it to the max and it uses more power than a C2D would. But it still does the job with awesome performance.

Make sure that you buy a motherboard that supports the C2D and just upgrade at a later time. Like when the E6800 is ~$90. It will happen you know. I also use a Zalman 9500 for my air cooling. I like it alot.
 
Nobody would say that the 805 is obsolete, however, nobody can disagree that it is the worst performing dualcore and it's overall stock performance is not far from a 3.4G P4 with HT and even overclocked it hardly keeps the pace of the 4200+ or 4400+ and gets energy hyngry like a quadcore.
I totally agree with redwing, I'd have done the same at the time but now that performance is ramping so steeply, one should go at least with a Core2 CPU/Core2-ready platform or a similar AM2 solution; almost all X2s OC to FX-60 levels and theres no 805 OC to beat it.
P.S: I'd rather starve for one whole month and get an E6300/X2 4200 than go with a 805.

Take the DDR2 800MHz package, especielly if that is CL4 DDR2 6400, It's very easy later to upgrade to a nice dual core but people hardly upgrade RAM, so it is important that you get good some good ram; some software, multitasking and general OS reaction are greatly affected by the quality of your RAM.
 
its not that bad if you cant even get it to run at 100% p4's are ok but this is way better. i doubt ill see a difference between core 2 duo and Pentium D 805 since the hard drive is slower than the cpu so (except for video editing) it makes no diff. ya in prob half a year when i get vista ill have to overclock it to get good performance and replace it soon after that but for now and for gamers that is all that is required.

You can do the same with an AM2 system after 7-8 months and get a X2, maybe one of the new ones to be released next year. The main idea when you don't have enough money for a killer system is to keep upgrading in mind.
 
That's right. Either option is good, either option will give you a decent system by today's standard's, with a possibility for upgrade.

To consolidate your choice, check Tom's charts for CPU and GPU performance so you can pick a combination that's right for you.
Also, some people on these forums run very useful and informative threads that keep track of current GPU and CPU deals (mostly GPUs tho), try to look for these - they can help you snipe some sweet deals.

Lastly, whatever you do, make sure your components are inter-compatible. Mostly make sure your chosen MB will support your current CPU :) but that goes without saying I guess. If you run into trouble while building your system, you can always come back here for advice.

You really shouldnt go with amd. Its not that im a intel fanboy or anything but the pd is not a bad chip at all and if you go with the intel setup it will alow you 2 upgrade to a c2d and those are the best chips on the market. Do yourself a favor and go with intel and upgrade when u can. Otherwise you will kick yourself later.
