man2: dunno, but there really good i get them for my ipod
man3: oh there meant to be really good arent they?
man2: yeah its awesome i had to return it once cause of the battery but this one seems fine now
man4: i have a Mac Laptop
Man1: oh i have heard about them arent they meant to be really good
Man4: yeah you turn it on and it doesnt need to load up

etc...

this went on for ages and i just started laughing

...but from the television and internet, you'd think that they are on the brink of simultaniously supplanting Microsoft, Motorola, Linksys...

Yep! From watching movies and television, you would think that Macs ruled the world. They're everywhere! Of course, it's because they're prettier than PCs and set designers gush over them. In the make-believe world, the ratio of Macs to PCs is 1000:1 but here in the real world, we know the true story.

I admire their design and quality but I have always said that Macs are for people who don't mind paying extra for nothing in return. I have a little insight into this - I used to sell Macintosh computers.

Hey Rushfan,

Try parting out a Woodcrest build similar to the Mac Pro!!

You might be VERY surprised. AND It runs windows just fine as well...

The pricing behind a Mac Pro is actually VERY VERY good.

If you are looking for a multipurpose workstation the Mac Pro is actually difficult to beat in both price and performance..

Now the Mac Book Pros are a different story as they are quite expensive in comparison.

PS... I used to sell MACs as well. (well I tried anyway :))

I'll never be able to afford an ipod.
I did get my 2- gb mp3 player 5 or so years ago(seems like I've had it forever) for about $180 tho. while comparable ipod was $400. They're nice but it's like paying for a luxury car vrs a muscle car. Muscle car is cheaper luxury is still fast but you paid more and don't want to go ripping things out to repair/upgrade.

Wow, I'm back. Thanks for the lively discussion and honest mature opinions, people.

About Ipods: they suck in general. I jumped on the Ipod bandwagon with the 1st gen nanos and I wish I bought a Zen or Sansa now. The only thing going for them (if you are a techie type, like me, who doesn't think that the most important thing is the pretty appearance..) is that they have excellent sound quality. My nano scratched up from just sitting in my pocket and on a desk. The battery life sucks, and is getting worse each charge. The price is insane. There's no FM tuner.

I know, there are a lot of music players just as suck as this. However, people don't elevate them to higher levels of excellence without reasonable evidence. And they are never are as good as the mighty iPod.

Rants, anyone?

Im right there with you. I dont really hate their products though I have no use for them. I just hate all of the lying that goes on with that company and the blind ignorance of the majority of people who own their products. I will never buy an Ipod! Creative Vision M FTW!!!

Best,

I guess I shouldn't have said that I hate Apple.

I'm just... weary... of hearing them made to be more then they are. They are a minority company with trendy people and consumer whores like BaronMatrix whoring their products, and a small group of people who actually buy them because they are good at what they do.

My cousins are typical Apple whores. All they really do is surf the net, type, and play occasional games (which is stupid cause Apple games suck - they have like 3 games that actually work on Apples iMacs and the iMac GPU, X1600, sucks so it can't max the settings, lol). In other words, these are people who have NO REASON to use a Mac. They don't watch movies on the macs, they don't have 1500$ speaker sets hooked up to play music, they don't edit video or music, they don't use CAD programs, they don't do fuhcking ANYTHING except surf the net and play their miserable games at low resolutions. Yet these people think Seve Jobs is a GOD and that they need the next Apple product and that their Apple computers satisfy them far better than any PC, sex toy, or lover ever could. I don't see them much, so they don't have much impact on me, but I'm in college now and every college idiot thinks the same way, AND IT GETS TO ME.

Apple is just a little Microsoft waiting to control your life the moment it gains a dominant market share. For now I don't hate them... don't really agree with the way they do things, but hey... that's why I don't own ANY of their products (screw you iPod... gimme a Sansa!)

I hate having several devices to do things...

So my IPOD is my phone, my PDA is my phone, My video playback device is my phone (gotta love slinging media to a phone :)).

(oh and my phone actually works well as "you guessed it" a phone) :)

NO it is NOT the Iphone... It is the UT Starcom XV-6700..

Great converged device as long as you add a large large memory card.

The IPhone is a play into that market... Not sure how nice it will play with Outlook and the sorts.. I would not buy it anyway since it is Wayyyyyy too much money for what you get.....

I've owned several iPods, and I don't think I'm going back. Don't get me wrong, I liked them (well...better than I liked iTunes :?), but there are some other good ones out there.

Everyone's talking trash about the Zune, but I like mine a lot. Personally, the proprietary formats issue doesn't bother me because all my music is in mp3 format, now that I've stopped downloading from the iTunes Store. Just get a CD/RW and burn to an audio CD, then re-rip it. Not hard. Time-consuming, but not hard.

Videos play awesome, especially in widescreen. I guess the only hard part would be converting videos to the .wmv the player needs, but other than that it's a piece of cake.

Doesn't work under Linux (yet), but at least it charges.

The XV-6700 is a blank canvas with a lot of potential...

Many of the reviews/reviewers only spent a few days with the device. I now have about 4 other friends that are on the 6700 and love it.

Once they know how to use it and what it can do they will not part with it..

Wifi enabled, EVDO enabled, bluetooth enabled, 1xRTT enabled...

412mhz processor... Very good audio (with the exception of the external speaker which is quite soft)...

There is freeware galore for it. Add to it a slingbox with mobile slingplayer and it becomes a VERY useful device while traveling.

Does ALOT more too...

That's one way around it but you lose a lot of quality doing that since you are compressing the song twice. It's kind of like making a photocopy of a photocopy - the quality suffers with each generation.

I recommend the SanDisk Sansa e200 series MP3 player for anybody looking for an iPod Nano alternative. It does everything well and the sound quality is truly excellent. Just be sure to ditch the bundled earphones in favour of a good pair. This is true of any portable - even the ones with "good" buds can't compete with premium aftermarket cans.

you forgot their clothing line...iSellout
or their pharmaceutical company... iBm

Damn right. If you asked someone to give you money to advertise your brand they'd tell you to get f*cked, but people willingly do it every day. That's why you'll never see me wearing a shirt with a company logo on it (unless I work for them, of course).

iTunes = compressed crap inferior to what has been available since the early 80's

iPod...

George Bush and Paris Hilton own one.
