I am waiting on building a new PC, and I saw there was a little trick to make a 771 Xeon fit into a 775 socket. I currently have an E7200 with 4GB of DDR2 RAM (I think it is only 667 mhz, will need to check when I get home to confirm). I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-S3G motherboard (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2729#ov)
I am looking into getting something like:
E5450 (http://ark.intel.com/products/33083/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5450-12M-Cache-3_00-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB)
or an X5460 (http://ark.intel.com/products/33087/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X5460-12M-Cache-3_16-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB)
The largest difference that I have noticed with these CPUs is the max TDP is the E5450 is 80W and the X5460 is 120W. I would obviously rather have the 80W for power consumption, but is there any real difference between these? It looks like my motherboard will support both of them from what I can tell. Would one be able to be OC'd more than the other? And is there anything else that I would need to look for.
I know I am not going to get the best PC ever, but I believe this will be a significant enough upgrade to give the PC a good upgrade and allow me to hold off on a computer, especially if I coupled the upgrade with a Radeon 7770 or 7850 or such.
Thanks guys
