I've said it before and I will say it again. Apple tech news belongs on this site, as does ANY tech news. I'll even take the "Balloon Boy" and "Starcraft causes kid to stab other kid", I will even take "Kids set other kid on fire over video game debt"...

My only gripe is the Apple related non-news that gets posted. "Mac OS faster than Windows 7". That is just plain trash, not even because of the Apple vs PC, but just because that is just plain trash that should not be reposted or promoted.

Well written article. No more non-news please.

wow, a lot of these comments make me sad that I'm part of the Tom's community. Keep it up Tuan! and don't let these fanboys get at you. I use both Macs and PC's as they both have their pro's and con's. But guys like jangocat make me wanna switch to mac full time, just to piss him off and other small minded techies like him.

I'm a Mac and a PC, deal with it.

I cannot stand Apple and the Isheep community. I LOVE your unbiased articles, even the ones about Apple. Keep doing things just how you do them Tom's Hardware.

Tuan, nice article, but there is one point that I stopped over, read it again, re-read it, over and over again: "...and do that with a neutral stance."

I couldn't disagree more. Not only are most of the articles about Apple biased, they are so far from objectivity that makes me assume that the writer/writers behind the article to be jumping around like hyperactive puppies over Apple "news".

Neutrality is achieved when the writer of an article do a professional job at telling the story as it is with NO PERSONAL EMOTIONS, be that physically or textually. Here is an example:

Neutral article: Company X has released a new product Y. Its features are the following: blah blah blah.

Not a Neutral article: Company X has released a new awesome product Y. It is so amazing that with all its features it might even cure cancer. Yada Yada Yada.

See the difference? The first example is a professional journalist, a neutral journalist not taking one side or the other. The second is the exact opposite and yes a bit too cliche. Tom's is located somewhere in-between those lines closer to the Not Neutral side.

You like a product/company, fine, but keep it to yourself. If you want to talk about it, make yourself a blog and tell everyone about it...but make sure you keep your opinions/fan-boyisms in your blog and not bring them in articles on a news site.

Now, that you have learned what neutrality really is, let's see what the writers here can do. I'll be watching...and so will everyone else.

Positive+++

There is green and darker green and there is always going to be people unhappy with that difference
But we should not pay attention to these kind of attitudes or behave to please them
I appreciate Macs and PCs, Intel and AMD, NVidia and ATI, Dell Samsung Sony and so on. Our experience is better because all of them so the smart thing to do is how to take advantage from the opportunities they all present.

Don't you wish AMD will come up with a faster processor?. That will bring Core i7 prices down!
I recently read that NVidia is in a difficult position and I just hope it will get out of there as fast as they can because it is not good for me or anybody else to buy just from one brand.

I am not a Steve Jobs fan and that is because I am not a fanboy of anybody. But if I am passionate about something is a better way to solve any problem and hopefully this is what technology is about

I will continue to read Toms-hardware articles as every day I do and that is to stay informed about technology and have a better understanding before I hit "Buy".

You say this in your article...

"The Apple Superiority

Everyone has a superiority complex on all camps. Linux-fans, Mac-fans, PC-fans, Xbox-fans, PS3-fans, Wii-fans, sports-fans. You name it. Apple says it's products are better. Microsoft said it's products are more advanced. Sony says its products are cooler. Dell says its products are the best.

Who cares? It's marketing.

Do research, tests, etc. Come to your own conclusions."

You know what, this is what people come to sites like Tom's Hardware for, we expect this site to do its own testing and come to its own conclusions! Unfortunately Tom's hardware doesn't seem to want to come to conclusions or have opinions when it comes to Apple products, but will quite cheerfully present them as put forth by Apple's own marketing. How much of your Mac articles have any information which could not be gleaned from Apple's own marketting media.

You then say that Apple wont give you any products to test.. .well guess what, they hardly ever give them away to general members of public either... and a lot of people (those who care enough about having good hardware.. i.e Tom's hardware readers) wont be willing to shell out for products sitting at the top end of the price range without some kind of knowledge that they are paying for something which is actually worth the money in terms of performance.

Apple has relied for way too long on their marketing image and a falsified impression that they are superior in some way without providing any evidence to back this up, and to be honest, people who care about technology are annoyed enough at this to react badly whenever they are mentioned, especially by people WE rely on to provide us with the information we need to spend our hard earned money as to as much benefit as we can.

Tom's hardware is, I thought, meant to be somewhere we can go to find objective reviews and information about new technology and hardware. If Apple don't want to play that game, then just ignoring that side of things, and posting complimentary articles about them is hardly likely to change this (something I would have though Tom's would want)

I think the only reason Apple thrives is because
1.there will always be a percentage of people that will go for the underdog no matter what. You will notice that tendency in any field but the easiest to notice is sport. Some people will cheer for the other team just because they're not the favorite, I see that every year at the Super Bowl 😛
2. Some people lived a bad experience with a product, (PC, Apple, or whatever) and are now disgruntled and switch just out of spite. I think people in that category probably don't use their computer in a way that it would make a difference what platform they use.
3. The Apple product is the best for that persons intended use.

Now I'm not saying that Apple is a superior/inferior product but simply that they have an inferior market share. Apple products, like any other products for that matter, can only be the best in one specific use. There are no products that are the best in every field, and those things fluctuates. Perfect example is AMD wich used to be crown of performance but has now rather become best in the price/performance category or ATI and Nvidia who keep battling for the #1 performance spot.

I just wish people could recognize that the company who manufactures the best product for your intented use will change all the time and that only research will help you find the one that's best at the moment. However, and that's where the "brainwashing" comes in, some people will get enamored with a certain company image and will continue buying it's product even when they're no longer the best for them and that's the ultimately the goal of those companies marketing divisions : creating loyal supporters who will no longer use their critical minds before buying.

I cannot begin to understand why people get angry with customers of companies whose strategies/products they disagree with. Your anger is pointless and will only further polarize the opinions of those customers toward the product they just purchased. The harshest, and most effective, punishment you can inflict on a company you dislike is NOT buying their products and educating people around you about your decision. I did say EDUCATE. Word of mouth is a known powerful marketing agent but it will be totally ineffective if it you just blurt out irrational arguments that will only convince people that you're retarded instead of convincing them not to buy.

Anyway, somewhat good article but I don't think it will change anything. Let's be realistic here!

[citation][nom]CircusMusic[/nom]words I say to everyone contemplating between windows and mac:try both out and see which one fits your style, usage and expectations...personally I hate them.. but I do understand that it's my personal preference.[/citation]

I thought I'd try my hand with Linux, so I downloaded it and installed it. Why? Because I could! Why did I download and install the Win 7 RC? I wanted to get a look at the new operating system. And of course, because I could. Trust me. I'd love to give em both a shot, but I can't *legally* run OSX without buying a Mac! I'm positive that if Apple would actually allow me to run their operating system on my machine, it would totally kick. Apple's loss. All I can say is if they build it and will allow me to test it out (a la Win 7 RC's and the like) I'll give em a shot. It's their game to lose or win.

Amen to Fanat1c's comment.. People bashed vista who never even used it.. I've used Mac's and they're pretty and the OS is pretty but that's about the only good thing i see..

For me I don't care what people choose for their equipment.

Personally for me I have checked priced for parts that would make a system with the same or better specs than a mac pro and they generally come out to about $1000 cheaper.

So theres a huge apple tax. but the people who buy the products don't care. no matter how dumb someone can be there is no way to not notice the ads and stores and all other crap showing how cheap and high performing a "PC is. The people who dump the money into a mac already know this but they still choose to get the mac, that means that their only purpose for wanting the computer is not purely value, it is something that is hard to understand and cant be explained.
For some reason the mac makes them happy and it fits their needs.

why don't people bash the people who spend like $20,000 on a watch when a $100 watch can offer the same and more features (most of those $20000 watches often only have 1 feature and thats tell time, while many $100 ones will tell the time, automatically adjust for daylight savings and automatically sync to the correct time, and will change automatically when you travel and end up in a different time zones (atomic clock feature)

what about people who buy $500 sneakers instead of $40-60 ones even though the $500 one is made out of the same material and will last the same long only difference is the company spent 0.000000000000001 cent on the ink needed to print the name of a famous person on the side of it.

many people see this, they are not living in a cave only to come out when they sense a new apple product or 20000 watch or sneaker. They see something in the product that you don't and it has nothing to do with value.

I still have my opinion that apple products are overpriced but thats just me and those who are used to getting good performance and functionality for a low price. For a apple user, it is worth the additional cost and nothing you tell them will change that because what ever they see in the product thats unique to their thinking says it is worth the money.

[citation][nom]hellwig[/nom]As for Tom's, my only problem is the obvious bias in the choice of topics to cover. We have seen numerous stories about various FireFox BETA releases, but Opera 10 came out without a single article mention (here's a headline: "Opera 10: first released web browser to pass Acid3 100/100"). How many pointless iPhone OS updates have we received (and updates on cracks for each iteration), but only very recently have we been getting any Android news. Months ago Android OS 1.5 added in a software keyboard, don't remember that being mentioned. The Android OS 1.6 also now has copy and paste (no mention of that either?). I remember seeing numerous articles about this missing and subsequently being added to the iPhone OS, but no mention about Android OS updates.

You must be able to see where some of this perceived bias on the part of your readers is coming from.[/citation]This!

I have been an avid reader of Toms Hardware since its inception in 1996 - I therefore had the pleasure of reading articles from Tom himself. I was always interested to find out the latest specs of hardware and the well tested - compared and contrasted differences/capabilities of hardware for our consideration. I am still a fan of Tom's hardware.

Below listed is some points that I think Toms hardware needs to consider:
1. I agree that there is too much apple hate flamming going on. Its unneccesary and what people should be doing is stating thier case as to why something is better or worse etc than what is being reviewed or postilated by others.
2. I tend to think that despite the increased popularity of apple and apple products that the site may be disproportionally posting apple information in comparison to other hardware news, and that that is annoying because we (probably 90% of visitors) want to see more in-depth reporting of all the other hardware news/products. For the reasons mentioned, I can understand the increased reporting to some degree though I would quickly state that almost nothing was said about apple for years when Tom created this site. (That doesnt mean things shouldn't change, especially as apple is/ or could be of more interest now tho, and thats fine)
3. I tend to agree with many here, that the quality of the Apple news etc is mediocre. I don't mind hearing about Apple, and will not post hate statements for the sake of proclaiming my preference for PCs. But if people are commenting, critically, about the merits of either side, which statistically, is the PC side, then that is fine - people are entitled to present the case for their particular stance. What Toms needs to do is ensure their apple reviewing etc is not based on flaky or questionable comparisions as to why something is better about them. I agree with the sentiment that the apple articles to date seem biased and given their content, reason enough to state the case against the seeming bias (whether it be attitude or the aforementioned poor testing) of the apple news posts in question.
4. I'd also agree to some extent, that the overall quality assurance of reporting needs to increase as their are too many poorly thought out expositions and although perhaps a minor point, things like poor grammar.
5. It works both ways. I know many people with Macs and some of them are great friends and quite unbiased about Mac vs Pc - Although what I am about to say is without actual research references and may be considered a hate flame. It is, in my experience, that a lot of Mac people tend to be more evangelistic about thier products and with that give biased opinions about Macs and consider them to be the only system to consider to operate. That does not excuse posters of Tom's hardware from flamming Mac comments with rudeness/bias/or cussing etc (and be guilty of appearing to be the same way about PCs). But I do not consider a spirited and explained difference of opinion about why something is better than Mac to be flaming. Of course, there are rude PC fanboys who offer no reasons for their opinion/statement. That said, it would still seem to me that there a lot of posters that make a case, and do not just flame.
6. If there is an increase in Mac patronige to the site then sure, there should be room for apple pieces. But as many have said, they should be without bias, and with acceptable testing/evidence. Given that, to the best of my knowledge, Toms hardware is still predominately a PC hardware and gadgetry ethusiaist site, shouldn't more effort be put into the newest technology wanted by your audience? If something seems like a cool feature about Mac/apple, then by all means report it. But please clean up your act with how you handle your articles to be more scientific/unbiased about your findings regarding the technology in question. I believe I have outlined what should be done to achieve this.
My 2 cents.

[citation][nom]ssalim[/nom]Here's my opinion. PC is a 7MB digital camera. Decent, does not look bad but does not look awesome either. Price is $100. Mac is a 12MB digital camera. Looks beautiful. Price is $250.Both products are great. However, for me, I take pictures for fun and never print larger than 8x11 inches. So do I need to shell out extra $150 for 5 extra mega pixels that I never need? or do I spend just $100 for a decent perfectly working digital camera that does pretty much the same?I pick the $100.If you need 10 or 12 mega pixel, then go for "Mac".If you only need 5 or 7 mega pixel, then go for "PC".[/citation]
So a PC which hardware-wise can be identical or superior to a Mac is 5MP cause why? Cause it's shinier? No it's more like both are 12MP cameras, PC being 100$ Mac being 250$, with the Mac having a sleeker case and a different menu setup.

It's bogus, not bogues. Not raging or hating, just correcting. 😉

However, I do think you if you are going to put stuff out in public, you should have a thicker skin.

"Apple's prices don't affect you if you don't want to buy an Apple product anyway. Period."

True, but as an independent hardware site, I would have thought YOU would be interested in whether the prices given represent good value or not... we certainly would like to know before purchasing, not after.

"Their machines commanded a hefty premium because they differentiated themselves. Alienware included customized manuals, benchmarks of each machine, hand-build rigs that were clean inside out, and pre-installed games of the customer's choice. Other's like Voodoo PC, even offered customized paint using high-quality automotive paint. The end product is a luxury product more so than a tool. And we all know that these boutique companies went from small no-namers to big-time players in the gaming industry."

Yep, and at the time articles on these products stated what they were doing to differentiate themselves and what benefit it brought, and even commented on the value of these too... this information we always want to know, whether it be a Dell, Mac, HP, Sony etc etc

"I would say that some of Apple's ads are extremely stretched, but to me, even as I use a Windows 7 PC right now, simply laugh at the ads. I know they're just Apple's marketing department poking fun of PCs and putting their computers in spotlight. Microsoft does the same. It's normal competition"

This saddens me. The masses, generally, only have the adverts to help them make their minds up, I tend to think it is the responsibility of places like Tom's (specialists with a vested interest in technology) to help people make more informed choices and gain the knoledge to be able to see through the adverts themselves... and actually no, Microsoft doesn't tend to sell it's products by belittling the competition, it took a long time for them to respond to the mac vs pc adverts, and even then they haven't been overtly adversarial about it.

God I would like to give you +20

Why dont we just call this what it really is...? Fanboy'ism of any type is pretty lame. I do my best in my life to abstain from becoming a fanboy of any technology or anything else for that matter. You no service to yourself to blindly accept or deny something based on no knowledge whatsoever.

Same applies here. People hate Apple and some love them based on nothing more than a fake perception of either empty worth or added value.

But on the other hand maybe the complaints are just about seeing too much of one thing being covered. The idea being that maybe Tomshardware might be perceived as biased if they tend to over cover something that has very little control over the given market...

Maybe we are tired of that moron that already goes around the office touting the incredible abilities of their stupid phone or phone app and have just had enough of it already that they choose to voice the complaint that they dont want to hear yet more of it from their beloved tech news source...

Quite frankly I find it just as annoying that rather than listen to whatever possible feedback your paying audience has (yes I know the site is free, but the audience indirectly funds the site with its presence via ad funding ie free over air TV), that said site would go on the defensive. Those complainers are your customers as well and maybe take the good with the bad...

As a new parent myself maybe I can pass on some common advice always given to me for child raising. Acknowledge the good, ignore the bad. Do that and you will foster what you want out of your children, errr I mean customers, errr I mean complaining vagabonds. I am sure somewhere in there are some wise words of wisdom, maybe just a little bit.

Oh, and STOP COVERING PHONE APPS SO MUCH... Just my humble opinion, because after I saw the complaining, I too realized maybe I have seen a bit too much myself...

I think that true ignorance is the belief that what you value is the only logical thing to value. I think its great that people love Apple, I don't love apple but I can see why people like it. this is just like everybody that calls talk radio hosts hate mongers and respond by saying some pretty hateful things about them. I like what the article says about making decisions based of research. we wont all reach the same conclusion but that doesn't mean one is the best answer and everybody that didn't come to that conclusion is less intelligent.
I'd like to thank Tom's Hardware for helping me choose the best products in my first custom build it, really helped out.

this may not be a tomshardware windows apple get away.com
but may be tomshardware i like windows but i love apple.com

but yeah, stop attacking tom's staff..

Please tell me, what pc exactly are you comparing this 7mb camera to... a £500 home user desktop, a £1500 HP workstation, a Sony vaio, the Dell media centre, the HP blackbird (mmmm hp blackbird, definately does look decent and then some). PC's are manufactured by an overwhelming variety of manufacturers and for a just as overwhelming variety of uses. Some are pretty plain and dull looking, with pretty underwhelming specs, some are gorgeous, but a little under specced, some are monsterously specced, with looks thatyou either think are totally amazing or horrendously tacky, some, like the HP firebird are better specced, more beautiful and innovative than even the best mac, but you pay a price for it.

The most ridiculous thing to ever do is to try and compare a 'mac' to a 'pc' there is no such comparison that can be made.

This is a good example of what I dislike about Apple. Their marketing strategy has been to label the 'PC' as a single entity to be compared with a 'Mac.' If you want to know why the hate, just look to Apple, they have deliberately fostered the divide to help sell their computers... and it works, because a lot of PC's are cheaply made to try and meet the demand of scoiety that cannot judge the differnce between having something, and having something worth having.
