[SOLVED] Is my CPU hard bottlenecking me or am I doing something wrong?

I have a GTX 1080 and an I5 7400 CPU. In games like Rust, The new COD beta and COD MW my fps is terrible and I have to play at the lowest settings. CPU utilization jumps to 100% and my gpu has perfectly fine temps and low usage because Im using lowest settings. If I set it any higher it's terrible. I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or I should upgrade to the I7 7700. I can't really get a new mobo and cpu and I don't know if the I7 7700 is worth it to upgrade. Should I get the I7 7700 or am I doing something wrong with the cpu? All help would be appreciated! 16 GB Ram I5 7400 GTX 1080

What's your FPS average and what's the lowest FPS you get in gameplay. ?
How much RAM your system has?
With that CPU/GPU combination you could run at medium to high settings.

It's dependent on the map, but like 50 -70 average with 100% cpu and like 30% GPU on all lowest settings. It auto sets to high but that's basically unplayable. 16 GB RAM

4 core/thread CPU’s are bare minimum entry level for modern AAA games. COD MW will happily use 12 threads of my 3700x.

I really don't want a new mobo. I can only upgrade to I7 7700 and I want to know if it's worth it. I didn't think it would hold me back that much though? Make sure to get a good aftermarket CPU cooler since the i7 7700 can get pretty toasty.

At 1080p lower settings the stress goes into the CPU, since you have 4 core / 4 thread cpu, 100% usage is what you sould expect at almost any game.

Sadly in this case, turning some graphic settings to medium/high may reduce the CPU load a bit but it will still be a complicate balance equation that probably wont help with the FPS counter. So yeah a Core i7 7700 may give you some room to breath, for some time.

Depends on the price, these i7's are usually very overpriced for the performance they offer, often its a long way to the price of a modern cpu and motherboard that will outperform it. For gaming the only real benefit is hyperthreading which will help in these games but its not a huge upgrade.

My point is, for the cost of an i7 7700, you could possibly get a new CPU, and motherboard, with an actual upgrade path. Also that PSU is poor quality. Why throw money into a dead socket, when you can move into something that has some upgrade potential, down the road? Absolute cheapest i7 7700, buy it now, that isn't in China, is $210, from what I see, on Ebay. The rest are $235+. That is simply too expensive, for a dead platform, such as yours.

Absolute agree, in the UK you can get a 2600x and a decent B450 motherboard for way less than an i7 7700.

B550 boards are way overpriced in the uk at the moment.

On a purely value for money level the 2600x is still absolutely viable imo.

Certainly a better option than sticking a 7700 in there, the board and i5 could be sold as a working unit then to grab some money back

Worst case about the same as an i7 7700 for games that aren't heavily multithreaded, for games that are it has an extra 2 cores/4 threads over the i7 so theoretically better.

If you can get a 7700 cheap it's worth buying, once you hit the £150 mark though you're better off replacing both board and cpu and getting on a newer platform imo.
