I recently bought the new RTX 3070 (Gaming OC, Gigabyte) and i'm waiting for it to arrive via mail. I read at the website that the recommended PSU wattage was 650w, I currently own a 620w PSU (Seasonic S12II 80+ Bronze) that i run my system with. I'm replacing my GTX 970 Xtreme Gaming (also, gigabyte) with this new GPU. Currently, my system runs on a Ryzen 5 3600 and 16 (2x8gb) of ram, with one ssd of 250gb and one HDD of 1tb. Should I buy a new PSU? I just spend a lot of money on that card and i do not intend to damage it, but i probably will be able to buy a new psu only on february, should it be safe to run my new card on my current gpu until then? Thanks in advance.

620w is plenty, your cpu is low wattage. That 650w recommendation takes into account using a high wattage cpu like the 10900k which can draw 250w itself. However that particular model psu is very mediocre quality, personally I’d want a higher quality psu to run a gaming pc with a 3070. If the psu is still under warranty you are ok to use it for now but I would upgrade. Any sign of instability when the new gpu is installed could be a sign of the mediocre psu having issues and in which case upgrade it immediately.

Theoretically, it should be safe as long as you do light gaming like csgo maybe with an fps cap. But ampere spikes often, so idk if it's worth taking the risk, to me it isn't. Plus Gigabyte has good RMA service at least where I live, so if there's a problem you can RMA it. You can probably plug it in to test if it works at all btw. I'd recommend RM650x or RM650. It's the same wattage as my 2070S + 3600. Works like a charm on the RM650.

isn't it better to get a psu with more wattage and a similar price range? That psu is about 200 dollars here. I'm thinking about getting the Gigabyte GP-P750GM, it has 750w and its also 80+ gold, also, its like 67 dollars less than the RM650

You can see my specs below they aren't far from yours when you get your GPU but yes 620W is enough! I had my 3070 running on an Evga 500w White for about 2 weeks before upgrading to a TX650 Gold so you will be fine! Get a Corsair Gold psu down the line you'll never look back!

So listening to both your advices i just bought the RM650x, it should arrive roughtly alongside my new GPU. Paid about 200 dollars that I probably should have kept, but hey, at least it wont damage my new GPU.

Great choice! I personally wanted that one before going with a TX650M.

I have paid the price for ignorance before getting a bad PSU so its never a waste of money for a good quality PSU!
