If it were not for the fact that I have almost completed a complete new build then I certainly would not have spent what I have on pre-ordering the 2080ti - which with UK VAT has cost me £1099.
Until now I have always aimed for the mid range with Gcards and my goto for value has always been the '60's. This 8 year old machine has a generation 1 i7920 and the only thing I have changed in that 8 years is that it carries a GTX960. Now think about how much money I have saved over every OTHER advancement in those 8 years. But now I realise 3 things. 1. my processor is not cutting it with the newest games. 2. despite 1. games are far more reliant on the GPU than they ever were before. 3. HDDs are rubbish compared to SSDs and I don't want to wait 20 minutes for the unreal engine to load.
In addition to these points I BELIEVE that ray tracing is the next big step for graphics fidelity.
Admittedly, if I were JUST buying a card I would wait the extra month or so for the 2070.
But, as when I built this machine 8 years ago, I know that cutting costs now only means you have to pay again sooner.
And that is why I agree with this article. But it's horses for courses and if I already had a 1080 or 1080ti then it would be a different story.
