Make a Router / ADSL modem as an Internet Gateway

guys i have a NOKIA SIEMENS NETWORKS Residential Router 1600 which has 4 LAN output ports and 1 telephone line input port. On the box of this router its written ADSL modem. This router was given to me by my internet provider.


Can I configure this Router to act as my Internet Gateway??????

I think if i can do it then i can use the following flowchart & connect my computers:


Internet > Router > Switch >computer 1,computer 2,computer 3

If it's an ADSL modem router -- you plug it into the phone line and connect all the computers to the LAN sockets.

I dont want to use the phone line. I want that router / modem to act as a completely independent Internet Gateway

Connected to what?? Will it ultimately be connected to some other DSL/cable modem, some other service providing Internet access?

The biggest problem in reusing most of these combo DSL modem+router devices is that they don’t expose a WAN port. The connection between the modem and router is INTERNAL. They only expose a DSL port (RJ11) and some LAN ports (RJ45). Therefore it's not possible to reuse it w/ a standalone DSL or cable modem. About all you can do is use it as a basic switch (and perhaps wireless AP if it include wireless too).

That's why I avoid these combo units. They save space, reduce technical support issues and costs (esp. if the unit is being provided by the ISP), even issues of compatibility, but they have one big downside; the potential for reuse is severely limited.

Does it have a WAN port, or is it just several LAN ports (RJ45) and a phone port (RJ11)? Because as I explained, unless it has a WAN port, there's no way to connect it to another modem!

You can't use it to connect it to another cable or DSL modem w/o a WAN port! It MUST have a WAN port, so it's essentially useless for those purposes. The only thing you can do is use it as a simple switch (via its LAN ports) and/or as a WAP (wireless access point). But for the purposes of reusing it as an Internet Gateway, it ain't happenin'. You’ll have to buy a new router (which will have the WAN port you’re now missing).

What do I have to do to use i as a wireless access point?
Basically i want it to be like this :
Internet > Dlink DWR-113 > Residential Router 1600 (WAP)


I plugged a LAN cable from Dlink DWR-113 into its RJ45 ports; disabled the DHCP server on the Residential Router 1600; set its IP address to 192.168.1.1 while the Dlink is at 192.168.0.1.
Right now I am going to enable its Wifi and give it the same SSID and Security settings which are there for Dlink's WiFi and see if it works....
