Question Microphone not detected when connected to monitor

My headset microphone is not detected when plugged into my monitor (which is connected to my GPU via HDMI). The output works perfectly fine.
My microphone will work when I plug the headset directly into the audio/mic port in the front panel, though the monitor audio is much better, and I would prefer to not have to switch between the two constantly when doing things solo or with friends.

I have tried looking in the sound settings for the control panel -- it says that the device for my microphone is currently unplugged (when connected to the monitor), which means it isn't detected.

Monitor: LG Ultragear
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (Driver version 536.99)
Motherboard: Gigabyte B660M DS3H AX DDR4

Anyone know how I can fix this?

hdmi cant be used with microphone, thats obvious
does your monitor have microphone input? if yes, then monitor should have additional usb cable connected to pc

I was able to use this setup with my laptop -- I connected the external monitor to it with HDMI, and then plugged the headset into the monitor, and the mic worked fine. Is that different somehow?

Is the monitor being properly detected by the PC as exactly what it is or is it showing generic? This might have an impact on what features your PC is detecting for the screen.

I looked in device manager and it says "Generic Monitor (LG Ultragear)".

My monitor is an LG 24" Ultragear FHD 144Hz 1ms Gaming Monitor (24GN50W-B)

monitor manuals or product specification doesnt mention anything about headset/microphone support, just headphones

If you're using a 3.5mm plug for your headset/microphone I'm surprised the microphone portion works with any device. I tried searching for anyone trying to use it in this fashion (after checking the manual) and wasn't able to find any.

im even more surprised that microphone input would carry through hdmi ouput into gpu, gpu has just soundcard ouputs, not inputs, hdmi ARC is out of question aswell
