I have nothing against booth babes. I personnally consider them kinda silly and I don’t like them. But as long as the girls who accept to do the job are okay with it, and the majority of the public enjoy it, why not? The girls get paid, the boys get a kick, and everybody’s happy. We’re far from the prostitute who gets beaten by its pimp.
But then, I went to Tom Hardware get my daily fix of hardware’s news, and I read this little article about Microsoft hiring bikini at Tech Ed. A conference that tried to target women with a talk called “women in IT”. I was mildly annoyed by Microsoft, and I was glad some people had the gut to complain. But then I read the comments, and I was totally horrified with what I saw. “Once again, fatty people complained”? “Stupid women jealous of other that are hotter”?
Wow
I don’t even know where to begin.
First, a word of warning: I am a “nice guy”. Which mean I’m the kind of guy who become friend with a greater number of women that average, but don’t usually have sex with them since they don’t “like me that way”. Suck to be me, or whatever. I don’t really give a damn anymore.
The comments I read were done right misogynic, horrifying, and I hate the people who said them. See, being a nice guys, I got to constantly try to piece together some lady’s broken self-confidence. And that isn’t pretty. You may not realize it, but an average looking girl, is, well, a person. She can feel what we call pain. And lot’s of it. And that pain manifests itself in a variety of way. Let me tell you about it.
Let’s talk about a girl who was my roommate for two years. She was a nice person and she was relatively pretty although maybe not on an Anna Kournikova level. But she felt fat (she was not). And she really, really wanted to lose weight because she didn’t felt pretty. So she stopped eating. In a day, she could eat maybe a slice of bread and a glass of juice, max. And to cut the hunger, she started taking coke and speed. Because she tough that once she would be thinner, maybe the guys would start notifying her. After a while she stopped having her period. And then she started fainting one or two time a day. (that’s what tipped me off). She almost died because she wanted to be like the bikini girls. Thank god, her boyfriend, her parents, and her other friends started taking care of her, because she wouldn’t be here today.
But why am I telling you all this you say? Because, the kind of women who attends “women in IT” aren’t pretty women who get enrolled in bikini girls. They are often insecure, average looking women, that don’t get any favor from the guys. Girls like my roommate. Women who can feel a very real psychological pain when some golden bikini girl rub in there faces the fact that they are not really pretty.
As I said, I have nothing against booth babe, or guy who like them. I have however, one hell of a problem with people destroy some women psyche because they tought it would be a good idea to have scantility clad babe at a serious conference on IT. Booth babe at E3? Ok, whatever. At CES? Ok, why not. But at TechEd, a professional conference where a lot of women were invited? That’s pretty stupid. If a guy went to a professional conference where the vast majority of the attendance is female, and then someone hired muscled men to beat the crap out of him and destroy his virility in front of every girls present, I guarantee you he would hate it. And then, he go on a website that talk about the fact and all they say is that his complain was the fact of “stupid nerds who never get laid anyway”. I think he wouldn’t like himself a lot.
I’ve talked about my roommate, but she’s only one of the many insecure girls I’ve met. I also had a childhood friend who was also relatively pretty, but didn’t feel like it. So she anguished more, and more, and to put away her pain she started cutting herself with rasor blade (no, she wasn’t emo, and she didn’t have a livejournal). She still has scars on her arm. And she almost kill herself one time, thank god she survived. And I have the example one of my friend girlfriend who dump him because she didn’t had enough self esteems, destroying herself and him in the process (I am still trying to put together the pieces). You see guys, maybe you don’t care, but personally all those person near me suffering drive me insane. Guess that’s the real burden of being a nice guys. And what pisses me off is that those girl aren’t even fat and/or ugly as some people seemed to imply. It’s more that the pressure of “be pretty or be ignored” drive them mad.
Oh, and you think that sexism doesn’t exists anymore? That any women is today on the same footing as any man? Think again pals. In my internship this summer (I’m a software engineering student), I had the chance to work with a very hot 22 years old journalist. I was making a website, she was getting the content to put on it. And from what she told me, she had a very, very hard time getting taken seriously for the sole reason that she was a girl. At one conference she went, she was one of the only girl present, and she was constantly hit on by fat and ugly creepy old guys. Bikini girl may not give a crap, but a lot of pretty girl don’t want to be hit on and considered only for there potential as sex mate. At the end of one interview, the guy she interviewed didn’t say “good job” or “it was a pleasure”, he only say “it was fun, you were very pretty”. Wow, that sentence totally didn’t imply “I don’t give a shit about you or your competence, all I care is that I can imagine you naked”
So there is the second problem with the bikini girls. It set a very bad tone. Instead of being a professional environment where girl aren’t primarily girls but are insteand other IT professional, it became some kind of stupid party. And the heightened testoterone level caused by those girls surely didn’t do any good to the women who wanted to be considered as “Lina, who can configure an ASP.NET server in 10 minute” instead “Another random chicks with boobs”. The conference didn’t need this at all.
That wasn’t a party. That was a Tech conference. And the bikini babe were a very bad idea, and I hope Microsoft issued one hell of an apology. And I hope the genius who came up with the idea got fired. The people who complained were in every right to do so, and for all you who complained that those were only fat and ugly girls, honestly, I hope you realize how horrible those word are. Objectification of women and sexisms are still a problems today, what with anorexia and the like. I almost lost two very important person in my life because of that, and I can attest that a lot of girl feel very bad about how they look. So sorry, but I think that you are asshole if you really meant that. Cause I have the nice guy curse, and that means that I got to listen to them instead of just fucking them. And I don’t like what I hear most of the time. I just hate it when my friends are sad or depressed.
And for the bikini girls, I hope them the best of luck, and I hope that next time they would be featured in a place where they won’t destroy the self-esteem of others more average looking women. Like at an anime convention, or somewhere like that. Cause as I have said, I have nothing about admiring consenting pretty women. Boys get a kick, the girls get paid, and everybody happy. And that’s the key, making everybody happy. Without making other people sad or depressed. Because that, I can’t tolerate it.
PS : some guys actually said that the complaints where made by an Apple fanatic user who have have a iPhone and a iPad. It’s funny because my laptop is indeed a Macbook Pro (yeah, hate me). But don’t worry, I typed all that on my desktop computer, with a Core2duo 3Ghz with 4GB RAM and a GTX 260. So there are no evil Apple bits in my message.
