My PC was overheating to the point of beeping with only the antivirus running. I took the cover off, plugged it in, and powered it up. I found two fans, which were working fine. The power supply felt cool so I imagine the intake fan was running.

No searches uncovered any data on how many fans this exact PC package is supposed to have. One: I'd like to have that data in case I missed something, something isn't working, or there are jacks for other fans I could add.

Two: if the fans are okay, what else should have caused the overheating? Based on the task manager, it was the Windows Defender Antivirus. The AV has caused it to run at full power before. But this time, the temperature readings got as high as 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

cpu cooler could be failing?

service manual
The manuals links for this PC at the HP Support site go to old links-only pages that all lead back to new product data.

I need to keep this PC in service. What are other reliable sources of old HP PC manuals? Where would you look for data on the issue you descibe and other potential causes?

I have a screenshot using Core Temp but you don't seem to allow attachments. Fans are only running load using Windows Defender AV, but temps still show hot even when not running anything and fans not running fast. It's showing max temps in the 170 to 200 degree range.

I booted into the UEFI bios settings and checked the thermal data. It said the liquid cooler fan is speed was 989 to 1164 RPM. Does that still sound like the CPU cooler, i.e., is it running too slow at that rate? Or what else might it be?

I think there might be a BIOS setting under thermal for manual>max cooling so the CPU cooler runs at full throttle all the time. The default setting is optimal. I also used the BIOS to turn off overclocking. And I set options in Cool Temp for overheat protection. But I think you sent me in the right direction. No more beeping or high CPU utilization just from running the Windows Defender AV. Hopefully this box will last until I get another. Getting my backup PC up to date in case I have to use it. :)

Get a new CPU cooler. Air is more durable and cheaper than liquid.

You can fix a broken AIO cooler, just replace
eBay link to the CPU cooler

This appears to be a compatible CPU cooler. I can't tell if it's liquid or air. On my computer, tubes come from the CPU cooler to a couple other places. Do these contain the liquid? If I remove the cooler and these tubes, does the liquid run all over my motherboard?

Right now I just want to clean the CPU fan. It looks like if I unscrew it and leave the tubes on I'm OK. Then I can clean the fan. But then I may have to add thermal grease, is that right before I put it back. Is that right or do I not have to add thermal grease when reseating it? Is there a way to clean that fan without removing it at all?

Is the only fan on a liquid cooler the one in the radiator, or is there an additional fan in the heatsink on top of the CPU in these? It's an HP branded liquid cooler in an HP Omen 870.

The tubes on the liquid cooler vibrate so the radiator is working. The fan there is turning. I blew it out with an electric computer blower made for this purpose. There is a little dust residue on it. Is that enough to make a difference?

It doesn't seem to run too hot now even when I do stress tests. Was it a fluke?

I can't find any software that will tell me how fast the fan is running. Not even FanSpeed tells me that. I can't find any software that lets me manually adjust the fan speed either.

Please use Celsius readings.
What is the cpu + gpu?

HP Omen 870
Is this the case?

I used an AIDA64 stress test and at 100% cpu utilization it never got above 80 degress Celsius. I found a fan speed other than the GPU using HWMonitor. The other fan was FANPWMIN0. That fan never got above 52% max during the stress test. No beeps.
