There is just no way of knowing if your one of the bad 30% until you try to unlock...
And the unfortunate thing is a lot of people won't unlock because they don't know about it and probably don't care...and if any retail computers bought in stores have 550's in them, you can't unlock those unless you switch the motherboard...
Even though not everyone will unlock still 60-70% is pretty good I'd say...

Cause these are the 2 different motherboards I am tossing up between:
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P $109 AUD or
Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P $155 AUD.
The Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P has crossfire ability and ACC where the Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P has DDR3 and ACC? What do you think is better out of the two?

If you plan to crossfire in the future you will need the UD4P...
But if you're not planning to crossfire then the UD3P is a great choice...that's the one i have btw...

I don't think I will crossfire with a 5870 cause it is a pretty good card as it is! But do you think having DDR3 is a advantage?

With better drivers the 5870 should be more than enough for anyones needs unless they want to break a record or something.... I do not se a need for anything more than a single 5870.... Maybe you guys do.... =)

I hear those are good coolers. I have been using the ZeroTherm Nirvana 120 in my last build and it's keeping my 720BE x4 cool.

lol

I would get 2 5870s for my next build, but that is a HUGE chunk of cash. NewEgg ran out of 4870x2s or I was going to put 2 of those in my new build.

Darn the luck 🙁

Well it's about 1 month til I start buying parts. Anyone got a recommendation for a 790FX board that will unlock and does the best OCing? I hear the MSI 790FX-GD70 is awesome. Any thoughts from anyone?

Yeah, I have looked at it and it is top flight (especially having a seperate audio board).

I just wondered about the DFI and if they allow the ACC unlock now or not, since it's $60 cheaper. Plus, the MSI board has up to 2133 DDR3 speed capability and 4 PCIex16 slots to leave the option of 4 4890s or 2 4870x2s (if I can find them lol).

I am going to try and keep the price of the system under $1500. But, that's gonna be hard. I want to raid 2 SSDs so bad for ultimate game performance. 😀

Choices choices choices...right? Thanks for the input. I really appreciate it :)

But but but...

2 x 5870s = $790

Hm...maybe...3 x 5850s = $780 😀

Ugh...so much to consider. Maybe I can spend $1750

You really think the ASUS Crosshair III is that much better than the MSI GD70 to warrant the 30-40% more?

Thanks :)

Yes, the Crosshair III is the best AM3 board out, not to mention all the OC goodies and awesome layout... I am 1 week away from buying the CH III and some DDR3 ...

Dual 5850's should be more than enough for any gaming needs.... 3 of them would be crazy =)

lol well, that's kinda what i'm going for...a mack daddy gaming rig.

Just to buy it for under $1500...eh...can't do it, I don't think 🙁

Oh well, maybe I'll sell a guitar.

The msi board is awesome as well BUT the Crosshair is the SHIZZLE MY NIZZLE! yes it does have ACC! ALSO, My 2 4870x2s still out perform 2 5870s. Just food for thought!

Now if NewEgg would only give free shipping on the CHIII. The DFI and MSI FX top boards have it. UGH!!!! :pfff:

40-60 bucks more...plus 10 bucks shipping...that's enough to get another HD to RAID.

Oh yeah...did I mention I got stuff in my NewEgg Shopping cart? Hehe. I might be getting some stuff next week, cause of rebates and special offers and free shipping going on now.

Oh do I spend and then get the money and pay back Visa? The dilemmas... 😀

I was building a system the other day on NewEgg, and BOOM they ran out of 5850s. Oh well 🙁

I had one assembled:
HAF 932 case
Kingwin ABT-1000 PSU
4GB DDR3-1600
AMD PII-550BEx2/4
MSI 790FX-GD70
SunbeamTech 120mm cooler (I know...cheap lol)
1 Kingston 32GB SSD
2 Seagate 7200.12 500GB drives
2 Sapphire 5850 video cards
Asus 23" monitor
k/b and mouse

I had the total cost down at like $1400 or something with all the rebates. Now, I gotta wait and see what I can get when the parts get back in stock.

i have the Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P and i will say there is only one downfall that i have. i use gskill 1066 memory and the board dont fully support my memory. i have to run my memory at 800mhz.
took me a rma of my mobo, cpu, and memory trying to get rid of my blue screens before the gskill tech told me that without the option to adjust the voltage in the ht the memory will not be fully supported.
here is what the tech said

"Without a HT Voltage option, this motherboard/processor will have issues operating the memory at DDR2-1066. Hopefully Gigabyte will resolve this.

Thank you
GSKILL SUPPORT"

here is what im running my memory and it is set at 800mhz. also i have my 550be unlocked and overclocked to 3.6 and it is rock solid in prime 95 and memtest 86.

Cas lataency - 4t

Ras to cas - 4t

Row precharge - 4t

Min ras - 12t

Twtr command - 3t

well just in case you didnt know, 800Mhz DDR2 at 4-4-4-12 is faster than 1066Mhz DDR2 at 5-5-5-15 ... 1066Mhz is really 800Mhz designed to run at higher speeds with a voltage increase. Now, if you can run your 1066Mhz at 1200Mhz like xtc then that is where normally DDR2 tops out. For example my mobo hates 1066Mhz (they run fine at 800Mhz) but I decided to get real 800Mhz ram and raise the FSB while lowering the timings... For some reason my mobo does not like anything over 2.0v as far as the RAM goes...
