I built my computer about 5 years ago, just recently I installed a fan controller which should not have changed anything but my computer would not boot afterwards. I hd an msi z170a xpower gaming titanium and kept getting error code D0. After testing the motherboard with no cpu, no ram and no gpu and was still getting D0. I tried everything to troubleshoot it and came to the conclusion the motherboard was shot.

I purchased an asus rog strix z390-e today. Built my whole computer back up and still would not POST. upon booting all fans and leds power on, the cpu debug led flashes red for 1/2 second and then the dram led lights up for 5-6 seconds then the computer reboots. It does this cycle 3 times and then stays on with all debug leds off but no post beeps and no output.

This has all lead me to the conclusion that it is either my ram or cpu causing the problem. When I remove the ram and try to boot I get the beep code that memory is missing but then I plug the memory back in and it does the boot loop from above. Does this mean my cpu is not the problem? I don’t have a way to test the cpu or ram in another build. There are no bent pins on the mobo.

I’m thinking of just upgrading the cpu and ram as it has been 5 years but any troubleshooting advice would be helpful.

specs:

motherboard: asus rog strix z390-e

cpu: i7-6700k

ram: gskill tridentz 3200mhz

When testing the previous motherboard I detached it and the errors persisted. It only connects with a usb 2.0 to the mobo I don’t see how this could be the problem.
That motherboard don't support a 6700K so it will never work

It's not going to boot without a CPU usually does nothing. No memory no way it can boot then either but it should of changed the code.

In my frustration I spaced on checking that thank you. Upgrading the cpu tomorrow.

Still not sure why my old motherboard crapped out or why the error code didn’t change but will report back tomorrow if new cpu fixes my problems.
