Question RTX 5080 Running at 4x PCI 3.0 Lanes

Hello,

I just purchased a new RTX 5080 from MSI for my system. My mainboard and CPU are still a bit of older generation (Specs Below). The card feels like it's running great since I was upgrading from a 3070, however when I fired up GPU-Z I noticed that the bus says that it is currently running at 4x PCI-E Lanes. I'm trying to do some research on why this might be happening but from what I'm seeing I have things installed correctly and I'm just not sure what Bios setting might be causing this issue

Motherboard - TUF Gaming Z590-Plus
CPU- Intel Core I7-10700KF
GPU - MSI GeForce RTX 5080 Trio

Image in GPUZ was taken under load from both render test and loading a highly graphical game (God of War Ragnarok)

GPU is installed in circled PCI 16x slot, said to be the one connected to the motherboard. My only M.2 Drive is installed in M.2 slot 3, which I can't seem to figure out weather it shares any bandwidth with this slot

I am aware with 10th gen processor I will be restricted to 3.0 PCIe, however I am trying to figure out why I can't get the card to access its full 16x lanes and it's only currently access 4x

I have checked Bios for the term I saw come out of "Bios Bifurification" which is currently set to Auto, and the auto setting says it gives access to the full 16x lanes.

What am I doing wrong? Is something in my machine broken? I'll be big bummed if it is 🙁

Please let me know if there's any other information I can provide I'd really love to get this figured out if possible.

So even though the board itself supports PCIe 4.0, it can't with a 10th Gen CPU. You need an 11th Gen CPU for PCIe 4.0 support.

Oh sorry I should have specified, I'm aware with my 10th gen I can only get PCIe 3.0, its the 4x lanes when it should have access to 16x I'm trying to solve atm

No, that's the summary. You want "sensors only" option when you start HWinfo and you'll probably have to scroll a few times to screenshot all the sensors. You can drag the HWinfo window bigger to use more real estate though and not have to take as many. Plus, you can post the images HERE if you use the following info.

I have not tried this yet, only with a game and the render test in GPU-Z, however I can give it an attempt tomorrow to see if any new info pops up. Current BIOS revision is 1801 which is the most current from what I can see on the MOBO website

Well, there's definitely something wrong and it seems likely it's a problem with the card. Look at your GPU Hot Spot temperature. 255°C when the others are all totally in line with where they should be? No. Something is wrong there and if something is wrong there it could be doing anything with the card speed and voltage. Again, could be related to new card on older board. What is your current motherboard BIOS version?

I have seen posts on forums saying Hot Spot temp monitoring has been disabled by Nvidia for 50 series cards it never changed off 255 C, Bios revision is 1801 which I believe is the latest release available for my board

So, the latest BIOS update for that board happened in 2023, WAY before these cards came out. I would not be surprised if that isn't at least potentially the problem. Look at the last update, 1801, and in the description one of the main notes for the update is "improve compatibility with NVIDIA RTX40 series cards". The 40 series cards released in 2022 so even a full year later some of them needed a BIOS update to clean things up. Not saying that's the case here, but it's possible that it's simply lack of adequate hardware level support for that architecture.

You might first try removing the graphics card, making sure there is NOTHING in the PCIe slot, no bits of plastic or other debris, and that the teeth on the card are all clean, and reinstall it. Sometimes simply pulling a card and reinstalling it does the trick for a lot of different problems.

If you have another graphics card, you might also try that in the board to see if it is also running at only x4, even if you know for sure it wasn't before.
