Question Samsung 970 evo plus half speed

I have the Samsung 970 EVO Plus (500gb) that I installed with my brand new computer that I built and noticed after benchmarking that it's running at half its advertised speeds.

I am on the latest firmware for the drive as well as have the Samsung nvme driver installed. This is a fresh install of Windows 10 and didn't plug in my other drives until well after the install. I also have the latest bios and chipset drivers installed.

My computer specs as well as other pics:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x
Motherboard: ASUS Prime X570-PRO
Ram: Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 32gb (2x16gb) DDR4 3200MHz
GPU: EVGA RTX 2070 xc
PSU: Corsair RM850x

One thing I did notice is that on Samsung Magician and HWinfo, it says its currently using PCIe Gen 3.0 x 2 and not x4 ... and I think that's where the problem is. I'm just not sure how I go about changing that? I've been through the bios, which is the latest for my mobo, and under Advanced/NVMe configurator it shows the drive but nothing in there to change from x2 to x4. I read the the mobo manual and didn't see anything about losing/slower speeds from the m.2 taking up other sata ports. And didn't see anything about either m.2 slot having different speeds.

I figured as much.

Any way to get that switched from x2 to x4 anywhere, in bios/settings? Or is reinstalling windows the next route to go? I've tried re-seating it to see if that was the issue and it stayed the same.

I have it in the M.2_1(Socket3) as per the mobo manual.

Not exactly sure where/which settings are storage. Under Advanced/SATA configuration I'm noticing that it isn't showing it there as present? It's also not listed under Advanced/HDD\SDD SMART Information, only my now connected HDDs. Yet under Advanced/NVMe Configuration it is listed there as "Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 500GB" and in there it shows information about it.

Not sure if anyone else can chime in, but even after a reinstall of windows it's still at x2...

Not sure what else to do at this point. It's a brand new x570 board that should support it right out of the box as well as a brand new 970 Evo plus. I've reseated the drive as well as reinstalled windows. From what I've gathered from other installs, it's just supposed to be plug and play with no additional tweaking yet I can't seem to get it to run at full speed.

Yup, the problem I seem to be having is that for some strange reason it's connected as PCIe Gen 3.0 x 2 and not as PCIe Gen 3.0 x 4.

With NVMe Configuration greyed out, I wasn't sure if it was even selectable. Although, my drive does show up, here is what I see upon selecting it

There isn't anything in there that I can change.

The Prime 570 Pro manual is rather odd in it's language about supported NVME devices:
From page 1-21 of English manual

"For 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen™ Processors, the M.2_1 socket supports PCIe 4.0 x4 mode and SATA mode M Key design and type 2242 / 2260 / 2280 / 22110 storage devices.

• For 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen™/2nd and 1st Gen AMD Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics Processors, the M.2_1 socket supports PCIe 3.0 x4 mode and SATA mode M Key design and type 2242 / 2260 / 2280 / 22110 storage devices.

• The M.2_2 socket supports PCIe 4.0 x4 mode and SATA mode M Key design and type 2242 / 2260 / 2280 / 22110 storage devices.

It does not actually say it supports PCI-e 3.0 X4 lanes per se, except when mentioning 2nd gen CPUs...

Hopefully, that is just a technicality/exact specs/manual error in specific tech details inclusion oversight, or, a BIOS issue that will be resolved soon enough....; I find it hard to believe they would cripple PCIe 3.0 devices to half speed/X2 lanes mode....(intentionally, anyway)

Figured I'd edit with an update, did the drive exchange and it worked. It's now using PCIe 3.0 x4 and running at it's correct speeds. Thanks to all those that helped!

Couldn't imagine why they'd have legacy support issues but this is my first go with AMD as well as PCIe 4.0 hardware, coming from an I7 3770k system before this.

Hoping to run into another with a similar setup as mine and see if they are having issues as well. Going to try a hardware exchange to see if that may be the issue, starting with the drive. Really hope I won't have to exchange out the mobo as well, but like you said, it very well could be a BIOs issue resolved in upcoming updates.

Will post updates once I get everything up and running again.

By drive exahcnge you mean the ssd? You got a faulty ssd before?

I have also run into a similar problem with my X570 TUF Gaming motherboard, with the new samsung 970 evo ssd, it's showing it as pic 3 x 2 !

Yes, I was within the return/exchange period with amazon and figured I'd start there to see if it was the drive that was the issue versus RMA'ing my board and going through that process.

To be quite honest, it could have been the order I had done things the first time around versus starting over again with the new drive or it could have been the drive. All I know is that after installing the new ssd into the motherboard and installing windows again, it was running at its correct speeds and showed as pcie 3.0 x 4.

Yup, quite literally the only thing I did was receive the new drive, slot it into the M.2_1 (same as before) and reinstalled windows.
