[SOLVED] ROUTERS and DVR SETUP

I want to view my DVR in other places thru internet... but i cant make it work..
Can anyone please be so kind to help me... and see whats wrong with my setup on routers and DVR?

-im using D-Link dr600..
-dvr network setup as "192.168.0.38" and the http port setup was "88"
-in dlink router i have setup the "virtual server" (not the port forward option not sure the difference) i added 192.168.0.38 with port 88 public and private.
-i also have the ddns setup in the router as mantaiplastic.dlinkddns.com

On my IE (using same LAN/internet) i can access my dvr thru "192.168.0.38:88 and mantaiplastic.dlinkddns.com"
however when i am outside or in other friends house, i tried to type 192.168.0.38:88 or the registered ddlinkddns.com in IE, i dont see my dvr anymore...

can anyone help me how to solve this? is this port forwarding problem? im really stuck... and my dvr H264 seller doesnt know either how to make it work🙁

iv tried the "canyouseeme.org" to see if my "port 88" is open, and it said no.. so i dont really know what to do next... because i was able to access locally with the same LAN with port 88.....

It seems to me to be a router and a ddns problem.
LAN settings and access seem to be ok - that from your PC via LAN (192.168.0.x) to DVR.
canyouseeme.org is looking at the current physical ip address - so your internet access ist working, but port 88 ist not open --> router.

Typing 192.168.0.38:88 an another computer 'outside' can't work. The ip addrs 192.168.x.x are 'private'. They can be used only in local networks - not in the internet (like 127.0.0.1 and others). All network devices know that, those adresses are not routed outside (into the internet). So if you look at your friends house at 192.168.0.38:88 you look at your friends network. And there is no (?) device with address 192.168.0.38 on port 88.

What i need to know is what router (for internet access) you have exactly ? And / or what kind of modem or cable device ?
DLINK web shows no DR-600 router, so I can't look there. And the used vocabulary like 'virtual server' is quite different between the companies. But it seems to be the right direction. And you will need port forwarding.
--> Do you have a DLINK DIR-600 router ?
--> On the DVR: did you also set the net mask to 255.255.255.0 ? Network type ethernet ? And the routers ip address as gateway ?

Now i presume you have a internet gateway router like DIR-600 and a cable modem (on router WAN port) for internet access.
The principles & fundamentals are everywhere the same - so here some hints:

a) Router fundamentals
The router must be configured to allow traffic from internet addresses (extern) to intranet (LAN) DVR address (intern) --> that's port forwarding.
To be exact: all addresses from extern (public), port 88 to internal (private) address 192.168.0.38, port 88.
That should be enabbled in the router. And only that port - no one else. No other 'rules'.

b) DDNS - DLINK DDNS fundamentals
The (logical) internet address of your DVR 'mantaiplastic.dlinkddns.com' has to be assigned to your current (pysical) internet adress - at any time. To be excatly: to the external (WAN) address of your router. That's dyn DNS (DDNS).
--> Did you register your device (logical name) at DLINK DDNS ? (please see the correspondig DLINKDDNS howtos)
--> Is the DDNs service on your router running ?

Then you'll have to look:
- from intern: canyouseeme.org, port 88
- from outside: mantaiplastic.dlinkddns.com, port 88

Just out of curiosity, who is your cable/satellite provider and what make/model dvr is it? I'm asking because I don't know of any dvr that will rebroadcast/stream via the internet. Usually you need something like a slingbox to accomplish this.

On the DVR > network > LAN setup>

IP: 192.168.0.38
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.0.1
dns: 168.95.1.1

then under "http" tab, port is set to "88"

a) router

- I DON'T have anything setup in "port forwarding" tab.. (i cant still understand the difference between "virtual server" and "port forwarding") however i have tried to setup the other way around which is setting up in "port forwarding" tab instead of imputing 192.168.0.38 port 88 in "virtual server" tab... and still no luck.

- btw, in the DLINK firewall tab, there was no setup at all.... the "Enable SPI" in uncheck.. i dont know what is the meaning of this..and my DMZ is also left uncheck (will this affect the port forwarding?)

b) DYnamic DDNS

- for the DVR.. hmm i dont see any brand in the manual or in the cd it just state "H.264 NETWORK" DVR

in addition:
i can see DVR locally but cannot view it in other place... does this slingbox will help ? because i see there is a necessary of port forwarding configuration to do also... pls advice thanks for your help.

Slingbox makes your movies available to most any device over the internet. You could be watching movies recorded on your DVR while on vacation using a laptop. I'm sure it requires some port forwarding too.

hi guys. i got it solved. i hired a computer genius.. and the problem was the internet service provider gave me a moden+router function which i didnt recognize it. so that is why when i set up port forwarding in "dlink" router it is not possible. so thats what it got stock 2 routers.

so they best and easy way is to make the ISP function as modem only. then the port forwarding in dlink will be successfull

You didn't need to hire a computer genius. You only needed to be more specific about your hardware. This could have been sloved much sooner. The only router you ever mentioned was the dlink.

as no expert in computers, its hardly to recognize that the modem gave from ISP was modem+router, since there is only "LAN" port available at the back ~.~ heheh
