Hi!

I'm still on Windows 10. Every now and then whenever I update the system I get the option upgrade to Windows 11. I always hit the blue "Stay on Windows 10 for now"-button.

But now I'm wondering if Windows sneakily downloads Windows 11 installation files and takes up my storage space.

When I am in Settings -> Temporary Files. I can see a list of things that takes of space. The only "high" number is thumbnails at 2GB. I did remove the Windows Update Cleanup it was around 5GB. But I can't imagine it would be Windows 11 sneakily taking space.

Maybe Windows 11 is located somewhere else? Is there a way to find out?

You can make sure you stay on 10 by doing this:

First, follow steps here to create a registry backup -
then:
  • Press Windows, type rege and select Regedit.
  • Open to the following key, e.g., by pasting it into the Regedit navigation bar. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate.
If the key WindowsUpdate does not exist in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows, create it.
  • Right-click the right pane and select New > ‘DWORD (32-bit) Value. Set its name to TargetReleaseVersion.
  • Double-click it and set its value to 1.
  • Right-click the right pane and select New > Sting Value. Set its name...

that will keep you on 10 unless Microsoft can change value somehow.

backup just in case something goes wrong. Always suggest it when going into registry.

a installer is going to be about 10gb so that space taken by updates is exactly what it says it is, updates... can remove them if you like.

Are you running low on space?
this might show you what is using space:
