Go to stanford's download page and get the latest client for your OS. The graphical client is pretty self explanatory. The console client doesn't provide any eye-candy without 3rd party software, like Electron microscope

Is there any advantage to the console client as opposed to the graphical client? Is one better than the other?

also

Does anyone know why I've been getting mostly dinky little WUs and never any bigger WUs. I have my client set to accept WU that are larger than 5MB. The little WUs don't seem to be worth many points.

Just unlucky?

The console client is supposedly faster. The nice thing about it is that it can be installed as a service on 2k and xp machines. That means it runs at startup and is almost completely invisible (less typing "services.msc" into the run box).

As far as WU's go, I’ve had the same experience lately see my stats. Although my 3000+ Venice @2.2 was chewing up the DRGROMACS with sse2 on, even if they were only worth 28

Does anyone else use EMIII? Is there a better monitor out there?
I get constant display corruption, numbers overlap and I can't resize the window, so a lot of the text is illegible. Come to think of it, the same thing happens in the Catalyst Control Center.

in my experience, the consonle-client is not much faster... (but of course it has all the other advantages cunninglinguist mentioned)
re this EMIII: cool, never even heard of it until now 😳 ; I check the PC's running my instances of FAH the old-fashioned way: by checking the FAHlog's.

and re sjonnie: congrats to your first million! you're the one, we all are looking up to! now you've got your own milestone-column on EOC-Stats and it will stay yours for a while! 😉

edit: re the WU's: I don't remember exactly, but I think I've heard someone state the FAH-Cores are better optimized for Intel-Chips and that is why those are prefered for the big WU's from stanfords work-assignment servers.

hmmm most of my F@H machines are P4s, but I still don't get big WUs?

I think it takes some time to see how long it takes your machine to do units. My machine gets 600 pointers almost every time now. They're actually not the best though since they take so long to complete.

They do take along time.. and the most anoying thing about them.... is If for some reason something happens and the fold get currupt, you have to start all over agin... and you get the same file so you don't know if it'll happen again untill you get there.

Now sometimes you get points for folder so far in to the WU. however such was not the case for me this time.

Bah. why's that happen.

Oc'ing is often sited for instability, and some cores(or WU) are supposedly less stable. The only time that I’ve lost WU's (without getting compensation points) is after system crashes. I've heard that sometimes the core itself can become corrupted. If that is the case, wouldn't it make sense to delete the core, and let the client download it again?

Thoughts?

Hey EntityAnomly! Just did your first 10K! Congrats!
I'm also watching the race between DH and Fronsse, it's a very tight one and it has brought them both to the 30K milestone!
and re cunninglinguist, who is approaching his first 10K milestone: jep, I agree that it is a good idea to delete the FAHCoreXXX files if the folding gets unstable!
Keep folding, folks! Maybe we can reach a stable 20K daily average, that would help us stay in the top 100!

Thanks stefan! Too bad I didn't know about F@H sooner I would have joined long ago. I love competition and it's even better when you're helping humanity in the process.

Plus I always used to forget to shut all my PCs down at night anyways so I figure this way they're doing something constructive :)

I'm working on setting up a farm, so any help anyone can give me will be great. I bought this lot of computers (supposedly for resale), but I figure why no let them fold in the meanwhile (or forever). Right?
I've read about a few ways to set up farms, but since I still mostly need ram HD's and CD's for these machines, the network boot option seems to be the most viable (up and running for the price of ram. If anyone has info or could point me toward some resources on the subject, I would appreciate it.
Also, if anyone has extra PC-100 ram or old HD's they'd like to donate or sell, let me know.

Happy New Year

You don't need hard disks to set up a farm, but you're going to need a ton of SDRAM from somewhere and a decent server with some pretty serious switch boxes.

Here's how to do it.

Good luck! You should get some serious 24hr average out of that lot when it's finally up and running, plus a nice electric bill.

hey guys just got set up after 3000 frames i am now running at 8.6 seconds/frame is this respectable or should i give up while the going is good???

Thanks for the link. I believe I saw it once before. I have a few questions if you would care to indulge me:
Can this be done on a windows system? Does windows support this sort of network boot? I have dabbled in Linux, but I'd prefer to use M$ if possible. Would it require a server addition OS?
When you say a decent server, what are the biggest requirements for a server? is it CPU horsepower, large cache, disk access, ram, network bandwidth? I've come across some quad xeon boxes (in the 700mhz/ 2meg cache range) with 4-8 SCSI drives and RAID pretty cheap on ebay, Even though they way 200 pounds 😉
As far as switches go, would this
work?
As for ram, i posted here i can't seem to find much out on the subject.

All input is much appreciated, Thanks

I never heard of this being done with windows, according to Novell it's not possible

Q:
I have a network with a NetWare 5 NOS and for security reasons I need to make the workstations boot directly from an image from the server. I searched the online documentation CD which came with the NetWare 5 package and I did not find how to solve my problem.

A:
Sorry, but there's no easy way to do this with Windows OS. They don't really support Network Boot.

However, you can certainly do this with Linux clients; the OS will need to be newer than NetWare 5.0! Here's one example of a Linux option: http://syslinux.zytor.com/pxe.php

By decent server I just mean one capable of dealing with 120 clients. They aren't going to be that busy, a 500MHz celery will finish a frame maybe once per hour so you will have a write, on average every 30s, pretty easy to deal with. The major issue will be booting 120 clients simultaneously or if they all try and download a core at the same time. The boot problem you can work around manually by bringing them up a few at a time and the core problem you can get around easily by putting the cores in the boot image. WUs aren't that much data so they shouldn't be too difficult to handle. I think a quad Xeon box would be overkill, a P4 with 1MB cache and decent hard drive should work fine.

That 48 port switch box should work fine although eventually you'll need to expand to multiple switch boxes.

Compatible memory shouldn't be too hard to find, here's a vendor selling iPAQ memory upgrades, just make sure you buy the same stuff. You probably need to avoid the 32MB chips, I doubt there is much PC100 out there with 32MB chips on it anyway.

Hey dude, where you at? We should take a trip sometime - if you still have an intact canoe that is after running that class-3 rapid.

Anyhoo, not much is up, I got the mass-spec lab back on line bringing my average back up to 4K+, but I'm having a hard time finding more PCs to join in hopevully 50 active processors would bring my average to >5000. Out total number of contributors is up a little but it's kind of stagnated, would have been nice if the boost we got from becoming sticky in the new forum had continued. Anyway, we're definitely a feature in the top 100 for the next few months , hopefully we can stay there for a while.
