Question Using a GPU from a PC with a bad MB?

Hi, as part of a bonding experience with my dad I thought we could build us both new computers. Mine had went out last year due to poor cable management (prebuilt) causing a short to hit the motherboard. It had a 3080 in it though, and I'd been assured that the GPU was fine.

My dad, however, was big into building PCs during the late 90s to the early 2000s and insists that based on his knowledge that if your MB goes POP and stops working then everything inside your computer is fried and will destroy anything else it touches. He refuses to let me use my GPU, but says we aren't going to replace it either. He sites a source of this that we had put it in his 13 year old computer (We both agreed with was a ridiculous idea, but wanted to try because he still insisted it was TOP OF THE LINE) and it went out.

What I mean to ask is, would using a GPU from a computer where the MB go out cause any issues whatsoever?

Any attached device, as described above, COULD be damaged. But not always. Modern systems/components have some built-in protections that can prevent damage when things like this happen.

The only way to verify is to test the GPU in a known good system. That means one with an adequate PSU to power the 3080.

Could be that GPU was damaged, but also very likely could be that PSU on your dad's machine was not up to the task of running 3080.

By whom? and what they did to find out that it works?

I am probably very silly but I'd dropped into th tech channel of a server in in asking about it. I admit I'm a bit clueless to most stuff despite using computers for years, so I tend to ask things before I risk them.

I wonder about the PSU too. It has been working fine in his PC then it started to just not turn on. It's been frustrating. I'd personally just wanted to buy a new better made premade. I don't have the patience for building a new rig or troubleshooting heavily.
