Ah a true newbie! :)

You will be more limited by what ammo you find than what guns you pick up at first. You will need ( at first ) at least one weapon for each type of ammo you have the most of. By the time you have plenty of ammo you will have figured out what you like using best. Be careful with a melee build early in the game because of
Supermutant suicide bombers. They carry mini nukes and will kill you easily.

I generally level up SPECIAL attributes first. Strength, Luck, Intelligence etc. The higher you get each level of those the more options that will unlock under each skill tree. I'm not sure I would go with any of those character builds. All the SPECIAL stats are important in one way or another. I just try and equally distribute them with an early emphasis on Strength as it will be the determining factor in how much you can carry. I would never start with Luck as 1.

quite a few times i left tons of items in random chests across the map when overburdened. every time i'd just leave myself a note(on paper or in notepad) where it was and when i got back, no matter how long, the items were still there. the settlement chests are nice for permanent storage but the others across the map do not get robbed like in Shadow of Chernobyl. a lot of places items will remain on the ground forever too. would get back to an area where there was a big fight hours later and weapons and ammo would still be lying all over.

the save on travel option also comes in handy. if you've forgotten to manual save and the autosave may have happened after a mistake is made it will put you right back to the last spot you traveled from. i think i have about 15 saves in the folder and i deleted a ton through the game. it's pretty good about keeping regular backups.

through lvl 20-25 i stuck with assault rifles and pistols. that's the majority of ammo i was finding and most of it is expensive. then started leveling energy weapons and heavy weapons as they came more available. then added sniper and other weapons.

strength for carrying, charisma for conversations, some endurance for harder battles. of course lockpicking and hacking come in very handy sometimes but most of the time it offers crap returns from safes and locked containers. the rest you can pretty much just pick whatever character properties appeal to you.

one other suggestion is to keep at least a couple of all the odd items you scavenge across the wasteland. many of them are needed for later.

I figured you would read what the wiki has to say about stats. Here, this is a very good page to bookmark for further review.

I would also make it a point to take the Scrounger and Fortune Finder perks very early. They will make life much easier.

I think there is usually a weekly game giveaway through our Steam group. Looks like that hasn't happened since the new year though. I can ask about that.

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/tomshardwareofficial#

I don't think anything else is going on right now. I don't remember entering anything recently at least.

I don't check with guides either, for most games I play. If I do, when I get stuck at certain places to make sure if it was a bug, I check the wiki. The only game I remember using a guide, was for Final Fantasy VII.

The early stages of the game are going to be a little difficult. I played on Normal difficulty. Ammo is going to be scarce at first, so it'd be handy to have a melee weapon. You can assign hot keys (favourites) for weapons you use, which I didn't think of for three fourth's of my play-through, lol. This means you don't have to go in through the pip boy each time you want to change your weapon. And like anort said, collect weapons for each ammo type and just keep with the ones that have the best stats and drop/sell the rest. I found myself over-cumbered many times and had to painstakingly get rid of some of my good weapons. Stack up on stimpaks too.

By the end of the game I had tons of ammo for nearly all the weapons I used. 1000+ rounds for my pipe pistol, combat rifle, sniper rifle etc. I had 150+ stimpaks as well, so I got out alive out of even the most violent of encounters.

Not having to repair armour or weapons felt like a blessing and it made it a lot easier. I couldn't go 5 minutes in F:NV without my armour stats dipping to a 0 after a gunfight.

I made the mistake of investing a lot on Charisma, when I could've placed it elsewhere such as in strength, endurance, perception and luck. Unlike F:NV, there aren't much places where having high speech levels can get you out of trouble.

It's going OK so far, except for a few buggy moments with equipping and tossing throwables. I'm playing on Normal the first time through and am at level 8 so far.

I ended up using 10 points on Strength and a few each on everything else at the start. One thing I screwed up a little is assigning more points to the first tier of skills because I didn't realize the ones below them were usable since they're greyed out.

I did invest at least one point each in Fortune Finder and Caps Collector, but I think I have to level up farther for Scrounger. Already it seems like there's Bottle Caps everywhere though.

I've been using as minimal weaponry as possible. I like using my Hardened Case modded 10mm Pistol, Short Barreled Laser Rifle, and the Cryolator is handy for freezing Ghouls. I also case hardened the Short Barreled Shotgun.

I've yet to find or make anything with a decent scope though, so it's hard to get accurate distant shots so far, but I'm managing anyway. It's kinda funny using stealth sometimes because I'll set off an explosion taking out a turret, then a guy patrolling near it will get rushed by Ghouls. LOL

I've got 18 Molotovs waiting to be tossed though, wish I could use them. I've fully repaired and upgraded my Concord Power Armour with more Health and Energy resilience, and Winterized it, which was after returning from an exhausting but very immersive mission.

I'm talking about the one south of Lexington where you take out the thieving Raiders lead by Jared. I was taking my time trying to use stealth and used mostly the 10mm pistol. This game keeps you honest without telling you how many enemies there are left or where.

There are DEF things that don't make sense though. Like the enemies at the very top of the grated towers in that mission can hit you all the way down at ground level, yet when you get up there, they're using short barreled shotguns. LOL

So far the map in this game looks and plays excellent. Sure it's not top notch graphics, but they really put a lot of detail into the playable area.

BTW, is there an easy way to sell stuff carried by a buddy, or do you have to transfer it to your own inventory first? I'd also like to know if the Fusion Cells run down based on time or usage?

The level of detail they put in Fallout games and Fallout 4 in particular is amazing. Almost every item appearing in the game is in all the games or is in some way related to items appearing in other games. It's like everything you find is a little easter egg put there just for you.

You have to transfer stuff from your companion to you before you sell it. No easier way to do it.

I think fusion cores are depleted based on time. Fusion cores are new to the Fallout universe. In previous games when you found power armor ( and got trained for it ) they you could wear it permanently without needing fuel for it. Fusion cores are pretty rare at first but I had over 150 by the end of the game. I didn't bother with power armor much though. There are a few places like the Glowing Sea ( don't go there yet ) and the skyscrapers downtown where power armor is great. Downtown you need jump jets on your armor and you can do all kinds of cool stuff. In the Glowing Sea it's more for radiation resistance.

Oh my god, the Glowing Sea was amazing! I kinda forgot about it till you mentioned it. I was intimidated when it was first mentioned but it blew my expectations with those kinds of environments and radiation effects. It really felt like you had to survive to get through. I was dismissive at first, thinking I won't need a Power Armor, just lots of Rad X and RadAways, but I was so wrong.

I never bothered with the Power Armor either. Just used it for going into the Glowing Sea and that was it. Never used it again.
I stacked up on fusion cores whenever I found them though.
I think the cores get used by time and usage. Sprinting depletes the energy more, walking doesn't. Getting hit with bullets depletes it too I think.

You didn't go jumping around off skyscrapers downtown? 😀 Also you can get on the freeway in some places with jump jets that you can't get to otherwise. There are quite a few hidden places that jump jets open up. At least one set of armor is only available that way.

Yeah I haven't been using my power armor much either, mostly because I didn't want to drain the battery if I didn't actually NEED it. My first Deathclaw I just parked it in the museum entrance and ducked in and out of a couple buildings firing bursts at it with the minigun, after letting the Raiders take it's health down a bit until it killed them.

That kinda sucks if the cell drains just on time vs usage though. From what you said about not using the power armor much though, I have to assume this game doesn't deal out as much rad contamination as the STALKER series? So far I've only worn the Vault Suit, except for one time when I also equipped a rad gas mask.

one cool thing about the vault suit(s) is they can eventually be upgraded to decent specs and you can wear other nice armor pieces over them. i kept my original suit for the entirety of the game. a good thing to level up asap is the science, armor, and weapon smithing perks.
didn't use much power armor until much later in the game. certain areas you start to find big stashes of power cells. by then i could level up the different types of power armor i had to suit certain situations; jet packs, radiation proof, carrying, etc.
you can tell a companion to get in a power armor suit and some will stay in it until you ask to exit, they don't even use or need power cells for some reason. i didn't realize this until about 50 hours in

I guess it doesn't. I've never played any of the stalker games, so I don't really know. It's much better than how it was in F:NV though. I think I got radiation sickness just two times during the entirety of that game.

In FO4, swimming through water gives you a fair amount of radiation. But that can easily be stopped with a perk. I also used a Ghoul perk way down at level 9 of one of the special attributes. It replenishes your health as you take in radiation, to some extent. The radiation does increase, but part of it goes to regenerate your health. It's pretty neat. Helps a lot when you're fighting a pack of ghouls.

OMG, I didn't realize till you mentioned it!

I'm finding swimming in radiated water and barrels of rad waste are the worst, other than the now and then rad storms.

I've also encountered some Ghouls that were particularly worse than the first ones I fought, and a couple Scorpions I moved away from after dying 2 or 3 times from them, as well as a pack of rather nasty Dragonfly type bugs. The Ghouls were part of a Quest I ended up clearing on the way to accepting it, and involved a Glowing Ghoul master that would revive them. I must have used over a dozen Molotovs on them.

The first Scorpion I fought was stuck inside a small hut and couldn't move, but I found out how hard two of them are to kill in the open, and I had Preston with me. I'll go back and redeem myself with better weapons.

The Dragonflies seem much easier in daylight, and not just because they're easier to see. They seem to be much tougher at night. Super Mutants also seem tougher at night. Every one I've killed in daylight was easy by comparison.

My next chore will be sourcing a decent Sniper Rifle (Reba II), and a powerful Machine Gun (Le Fusil Terribles). Here's the hilarious video I found that tells about where to get them.

Thanks for the alternate Power Armor use tip Gman, that could come in handy not only as effective enemy damage, but as a distraction to keep them away from me.

I find Dogmeat to put me through a gamut of emotions. At times he surprises the hell out of me at how effective he can be at finishing off or outright killing enemies. At other times he gets in my way, or gets confused, or just seems to go AWOL.

I had to laugh last time I found him just lounging in the doghouse in the backyard of a house near the Sanctuary base though, after I thought he got killed when I dismissed him to keep him from blowing my stealth.

BTW, I found some light armor a dog was wearing last time I played. Does anyone know if Dogmeat can wear such things?

The only thing I'm really struggling with other than the usual trial and error battles, is deciding what to sell and keep. So I'm amassing way too much stuff. Reason being, many items can be used for crafting.

Dogmeat can wear them. there are alternate dog armors you'll find. collars, doggie helmets, body armors, bandannas.
i started keeping a couple of all the found items in my settlement crafting storage and by the later missions i had some of just about everything i would need and everything asked to find for fetch quests.

i never found if there was a way to breakdown items from the inventory menu so after just about every mission i would come back to my main settlement, dump everything on the ground, and breakdown everything that had important materials; screws, adhesive, aluminum, etc.
by later in the game when the perks were available i had tons of everything from this and could craft all my weapons and armor up to the best stats.

Dogmeat can indeed wear armor although I just gave him a cute bandanna and some goggles. On my laptop or I would post a screenshot. The random junkyard dog you can buy ( multiple times ) in the game can also be outfitted like Dogmeat.

I keep:

All ammunition since it has 0 weight.

The armor I am currently wearing, Vault suit and later when you do the Railroad quests you can craft better armor with certain other clothing as an undergarment like the Vault suit. Then individual armor pieces. Eventually all of those will be Legendary enemy drops so use those to boost stats. Like a Legendary fortifying piece will give a +1 to Strength and Endurance. Then on top of that glasses will give a +1 Perception boost and hats will also give various stat boosts based on type. On top of all that stacks power armor.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Legendary_armor_effects

Most useful are any that boost 2 stats or 1 stat by 2 and VATS enhanced as it will give you more shots in VATS.

Keep at least 50 Radaway and 50 RadX. Those both have weight so you can store extras at your workbench. Keep all Stimpacks as they have 0 weight. Then any other drugs you like.

I generally try and keep at least 15 frag grenades and as many plasma grenades as you can find. I never bothered with Molotov cocktails after the early game. Keeping a few Pulse grenades is handy for robots.

Mines I don't use much but Bottlecap mines are very powerful as are the somewhat rare Nuka mines.

Use VATS when you get in a jam. It can really save your ass.

Well, I ordered Preston to get in the Power Armor suit, and now I can't get him out of it. He immediately got killed by the first creature we encountered, so it seems kinda useless anyway.

I've read that there's supposed to be an option in the talk dialog menu for it, but I'm not seeing it. Why the Hell would they make a got-to type command for telling him to get in it, but not getting out of it anyway?

Bethesda do some bat shit crazy stuff. This has me not wanting to put the armor on the dog even.

I also need to know how to get to Libertalia and Salem from Sanctuary? I'm already getting fed up with playing it using crap gear, and the power armor is a friggin joke.

Talk to Preston with the Talk prompt. It will have the option of ordering him to leave the Power Armor. To get access to good stuff early go to Diamond City and Goodneighbor. Both have great markets but you will need caps to spend. Quite a few quests tied to both places as well.

It opens it where it's located on the map for me. This one is easier to use though.
