it depends actually. but from what i can see they will wait for amd to release first. i think that's why 780 bring release in may last year. maybe nvidia was waiting for amd to release theirs first but by May they done waiting and release 780.

The nvidia GPU technology conference is on March 24-27, 2014. Most rummers are for first part of q1 for release. I think however they will be announced at the show. Then likely to be available around April/may.

All comes down to screen resolution. If you are going to buy a 4k TV then get the higher end 800 series. If your just doing a 1080p and in no rush then go for the 680 or 770 when the 800 is released. Most TV screens only allow 60fps.

My current rig I have bf4 running 50-60 fps on ultra at 720p on a gtx 570. I5 2500k 8gb ram and 128 solid state. My tv is a 720 32" which is connected. Resolution is fine for me as I sit back. TV is broadcasted at 518i and DVD and "hd" channels in 720, only blue ray and films borrowed off the internet is at the full 1080 so no real point. I'm waiting for 4k to be cheaper and ssd drives to also go down before I upgrade......I'm starting to save now!

The site adds that “NVIDIA will launch next series sooner than expected” with a predicted arrival for the GeForce 800 series, based on the Maxwell architecture, in Q1 2014.

And very impressive it is too! Amazing what they have done with 65w, cant wait to see whats possible when its scaled up to 150w+!

Nvidia has proven Maxwell's power efficiency with the 750 and 750Ti, but even with a die shrink to 20nm, there is no guarantee that the 800 series will blow away the 700 series in terms of performance. The 750Ti Maxwell beats out the 650Ti Kepler, but it's not by a lot, most of the improvement went to power efficiency. I have personally waited for the 800 series for a very long time, and I do expect at least a 20% performance bump that each new generation usually brings. Seeing the 750Ti benchmarks, I just can't help but feel that the 800 series flagships will behave similarly. They should be dramatically more power efficient than the Kepler cards, and that's a great improvement, but they won't necessarily bring THAT much more performance to the table.

As for the 800 series release date, I have seen many mixed stories and reports. Some say TSMC won't be mass producing 20nm until the second half of 2014, and some say TSMC has already started mass producing 20nm. Maybe they'll get together and have a huge argument.

well to me instead seeing massive performance increase on next next flagship nvidia might do what they did with kepler. GM204(?) will be the next 800 series flagship (880) and the top chip for maxwell GM200?GM210(?) will be 900 flagship (980). of course it depends on what AMD can come up with as well. honestly i want AMD to force nvidia to use their fastest maxwell when both transition their gpu line up to 20nm node process.

Focus on power effeciency is a natural thing with the "next" generation hardware in my opinion, just like we saw Intel's focus on power effiecency on the Haswell cpu. If you want to improve performance you need to restrain the power consumption if you want the product to be taken seriously. Who wants a single GPU card that needs a 1000W power supply to be able to beat the last generation. Sometimes you need to look at it at a different angle to be able to overcome limitations.

I wouldn't be surprised either if the 800 generation series turn out to be a little step in performance compared to the 700 series... But who knows, maybe the overclocking abilities will be a total game changer. We don't really know yet.

So I should hold off buying a 780 Ti rig until may/june? Usually what happens to me is I buy the top-end, and like 4 days later something better comes out. I really would like to avoid repeating :/

The 20nm maxwell stuff that everyone really wants probably isn't going to come out until end of the year or first of 2015. 28nm maxwell stuff isnt going to be a game changer. If you are always waiting to buy you will never have anything. At some point you have to pull the trigger besides the first set of flagship maxwell maybe riddled with problems and will only be reference coolers for awhile.

Because you're constantly waiting for the newest thing 😉. Unless there's a confirmed relearse date never hold your breath unless you're happy with what you already got.

If you buy a GPU with the mindset that it will quickly become a last-gen product, then you shouldn't buy one at all. Obviously the balance of the market shifts with every release of new GPUs, and you would want to know what's around the corner so that you can make the best possible purchasing decision. Don't continuously wait for next-gen, but don't make impulse purchases either. There is no correct answer to whether you should buy a GPU right now, but gather as much information about the market as you can, and decide for yourself.

I can tell you that the 20nm Maxwell cards will arrive no later than the end of this summer or early fall, just based on market trend and the fact that the architecture is already functional, as seen in the GTX 750 cards. I wouldn't recommend buying anything other than a 780 if you need it right now, because the 780Ti costs 40% more than the 780, but isn't necessarily 40% quicker, and the Radeon cards are inflated beyond belief. Bottom line is, the high end GPU market doesn't look very appealing at the moment, I would hold onto my money at least until there are some new pieces on the board.

The market for high end cards are never appealing in my opinion since they're so pricey. You can argue if they are over priced (some definitely are). It totally depends on your needs. For me the latest high-end cards will always be over priced compared to other cards you can get for the money.

I disagree, I think the gtx 780 ti is a phenomenal card for powering a 1440p monitor to play the latest and greatest games.

The Maxwell flagships are probably about 9-13 months away and a lot can change in such a long time in the technology world.

According to videocardz it's going to be released in May, but that's the only place I've actually seen that said so if wouldn't count on it. But it gives you more of an idea :)

GTX780Ti and value:

I just looked up recent prices then crunched numbers for the Asus DCU2 versions of the GTX780 and GTX780Ti for a fair comparison.

I used the same data from Techpowerup for Summary Benchmarks and overclocking results. Here's the important data:

GTX780Ti vs GTX780:

a) costs 40% more ($700/$500)

b) average 17.6% faster (same Asus design)

c) 5.2% faster when both overclocked to max (same Asus design).

*So the GTX780Ti drops to about 5% faster when the cards are overclocked. That translates to 52.5FPS vs 50FPS. Ouch!

this post just made me smile from ear to ear, I decided to go with the GTX 780 DCUIIOC and overclock it instead of spending the extra 200$ on the Ti version. Even though I knew I had a great card, this just made my decision to get the non-Ti even better! Thanks photonboy for making my day :)
