For general updating I still don't know what to do but "Defer Updates" sure doesn't do it and it seems to be the only "solution" so far.

With Pro, that's what you get. With Win 10 Home, you don't even get that.

I'm guessing MS are doing this because they have to update Win10 at this point because even though it's out there now, it's still in development and it will be indefinitely according to themselves. So I guess the best they can offer right now is the solution I've found on the net; to stop certain devices from being(wrongly) updated. I just think they should've made it easier on the average user.

Also, because sooooo many people never updated their machines. Not to Win 10, but regular updates for Win 7 an 8.
Massive security hole.

So, for better or worse, they are forcing the issue.

Exactly.

Can't say I'm pleased with the whole Orwellian nature of them forcing the updates, but honestly, with so many Windows users not keeping their machines up to date, Microsoft had to force the issue. Windows users and the internet as a whole will be better for it in the end.

I like the Start menu, but I haven't really been able to explore the OS with all of these driver problems. It's probably not Microsoft's fault, but I simply cannot play games with Nvidia's current drivers.

Yea, driver 353.62 (I've tried older versions as well) on an evga gtx 660. I plugged in an old GT 610 I had lying around and it works perfectly on the same drivers. The 660 also worked fine on Windows 8. A few conversations with Nvidia and evga later and I'm getting sent a replacement card.

Just some more details: After about 10 minutes of gaming I'd get a message saying something like "Nvidia driver 353.62 has stopped responding and then recovered.", then freezes whatever game I'm in. Sometimes it'd outright give me a bluescreen with a DPC_watchdog_error (I traced this back to a process called nvlddmkm.sys). I've uninstalled and reinstalled the driver probably 50 times with different methods every time, no luck.

I'm assuming you DID do a full uninstall using the DDU? You may need to do a clean install of the OS rather than an upgrade, if you haven't already. So far I've seen two cases where the DDU/Clean driver install didn't work, but a full clean install of the OS followed by an immediate install of the Nvidia Win10 drivers DID work, so it's at least a good possibility.

I installed Windows 8 on a new SSD and then immediately upgraded to Windows 10. I've posted on numerous forums and this is the first time someone's suggested DDU, so let me try that.

Ran DDU and then did a clean reinstall of Windows 10, and the problem persists. I wasn't in game for more than 30 seconds before the graphics driver failed and I had to flip the power switch on the power supply to turn off the computer.

It stores the activation info in the BIOS the first time you install it. If you put it on PC that hasn't previously had a properly activated copy of 10 on it, it won't activate.

Don't think I'd call forced updates Orwellian. Draconian, maybe. Other bits of 10 are Orwellian.

TBH, I totally get the forced updates. Occasionally I'll help some random people out with their computers, and it seems like half the problems are caused cause they haven't updated since pharaohs were in power, and mammoths walked the earth.

Microsoft seems to have made it a lot better for the uninformed user, and I'd assume at some point they're going to give some more power to the more advanced user.

So far for me is Sound Drivers, Xbox Controller.. I get it to work but it's a hassle ..... i hope DX12 works when it comes out

That's a pretty big assumption, no offense. It seems to me that more and more, they don't want ANYBODY, knowledgeable or not, tampering with anything. Here's the OS, here's how we want it to be, now use it and quit screwing things up. Oh, by the way, we removed ALL the options that caused our forums to fill up with your stupid whiney questions, so don't try changing anything. Ok, maybe it's not THAT bad. I think abusing Microsoft after years of them abusing me is fair play though. :)

If you have Windows 10, then you already have DX12. Run dxdiag.exe and you'll see that it's already installed. Whether or not hardware developers provide support for any of it's features is a strictly separate issue but it should be unrelated to getting current drivers to at least work without major issues.

I've been using tech previews of Win10 for many months and even in the early days had very few issues. My desktop is a three monitor, two nvidia graphic cards setup, with two printers, a scanner and external hard drives and a NAS.

The only issue was with the WD Cloud NAS and that was with WD itself not with the OS and eventually I dumped the awful software and just use it as an external drive!

I had the occasional glitch updating new builds with my graphics. I had to ensure all three monitors were on as half-way through an update the default screen would change for a bit then revert. If only the main screen were on, you'd think the thing had stalled and maybe reboot! nvidia were quick to bring out a Win10 WHQL and all is well.

I've read a lot about issues with Win10 and on investigation, it is clear it is usually a human problem. Some people just don't RTFM!! I sympathize with Microsoft as they have to make a technically complicated task as fool-proof as possible and take into account not just fools but all combinations of odd hardware setups. At least on my setup they succeeded.

Granted, it is an assumption, but still I think it's a fair guess.

I don't know, I don't forsee them relinquishing any of the power user options they've removed. What I DO see, is the likelihood of a plethora of "tweak" applications that return functions and behaviors to power users via third party utilities. It could go either way but I think Microsoft has thrown the gauntlet down and plans to stand by their decisions. Backlash is a scenario that may cause them to reevaluate some of those decisions in future patches or service packs however.

So,WUs won't force you to install an older driver?

I think above anything, Microsoft is a smart company. If you look at the original Xbox One and the backlash to that, they were smart enough to read the mood and reverse a lot of bad decisions. If enough people complain about the lack of control, they'll put some sort of additional options out there.

Mine still says 11.1.
