Doing a clean install on a computer . . . . I always forget to backup something. In this case the bookmarks on my browser.
Could be a lot worse, I suppose.
It was a bit like opening up a Dell or HP or something. So much bloatware.
Candy crush? Don't need it
Bing money? Go away
Xbox? Really? P. C. Not Xbox. Different idea alltogether.
Zunemusic? I thought that died tbh.
Cortana? No thank you.
And I'll take my news from not-bing, thank you.
I mean, I know why they're there and you need something standard to play mp3s. But after installation of Win10 I removed/disabled a lot of stuff.
Had to repair some things, which was to be expected. And re-install some others, also expected.
Had to re-build my bookmarks, because I'm an idiot. (Is it in appdata somewhere? I saved that)
So far 3 issues.
1) When I change default audio device all the audio changes from speakers to headphones (or vice-versa) except the mozilla tab playing twitch. I can play a video (over VLC, not the Movies and TV app. Although I suppose I should have at least given it a try before removing it, the xbox thing with the game bar really annoyed me and I might have gotten over-zealous) and it'll switch. I can do youtube and it'll switch. But twitch will stay on the device that was standard when I opened it. Probably not a win10 issue but a twitch/mozilla one.
2) My copy isn't activated due to internet connectivity (or other reasons) EDIT: this has changed to "Activation failed because this device doesn't have a valid difital entitlement or product key". And yes, I have the internet on the rest of the same PC.
I used
this method of clean installing without upgrading first because I didn't want to do double work (the installation of the OS took 15-30 minutes, so that was a bit stupid) aaaaand that might've been a mistake. I have my genuineticket.xml, it just doesn't do anything when placed in the appropriate folder. I did generate that xml last month though . . . .
Now, I know you can activate it with the win7 key so I tried that next. But that complains that I'm running win 10 and the key is not valid for this (I'm pretty sure I didn't have 7pro).
I'm wondering if I didn't have a proper win7 edition. I might have gotten a vista -> 7 upgrade instead. But I had a genuine copy picture in the system overview and I was offered the upgrade, rather than ask for it (although I don't know the algorythm behind that message).
Can't find the official product key (I lived on 4 continents in the last decade. You lose stuff. Still have my XP and vista keys, however much good that does me. Can't find 98 SE anymore either though) just a scribbled version.
Internet says the activtion can take some time (although I expect authentification congestion isn't so much a problem these days) so I'll wait that out I suppose.
And then there's the Slui.exe thing so I'll give that a go. Country specific so I'll have to do that in the local language, I suppose. My IT-vocab, not so hot.
I'll report back.
Worst case I buy win 10 . . .
3) Worst of all: Localization. As a serial-expat can I just say this shit REALLY annoys me.
I live in the US
I have US date and time format
I have a US keyboard
I mean, I don't. But I can't trust windows (or android, or iphone, or AMD Crimson) to not start talking to me in the local language. Or offer windows store services in the local language. Or to load the lock-screen in the local language (that one took a while to undo)
Win 10 has a language choice (unlike Crimson) but if you indicate you live in Ouagadougou you surely prefer all the services in French, correct?
NO!
Win 7 already had this, but not as bad.
3 issues so far of which 1 is rather minor. I've had worse upgrades.
