The new start up menu, apps, Edge browser and Cortana make windows 10 the best windows yet. It’s free and offers lots of new features and apps. The start up menu is improved and it may even make Windows app useful. Left corner shows up the most used apps which is a great idea. At the bottom we see an ‘All apps’ shortcut, plus shortcuts to file explorer, settings and convenient option of shut down and stand by makes it user friendly and easy to learn.

That script is pretty damn old. It is just a automatic version of doing that very same thing using CMD.

If Linux becomes too popular it will become the same as Windows. It already has had backlash due to design changes for the GUI, I remember people hating one of the new GUIs for Ubuntu a while back.

Not quite. Any data is anonymized, even that has been proven by those who are most paranoid. The data is mostly diagnostic or usage in nature, even Windows 7/8.1 sends anonymous diagnostic and usage data.

It really is over blown though. I found an interesting program called Fiddler that tracks when an application reaches out to the network. I can sit all day and it is only used when I open an app, on 10 that is.

Microsoft has been pulling certain data since XP SP3. In the end most of it is for finding and fixing issues. Honestly I see no issue with it because it is the best way to ensure problems and issues get fixed and that the next version of Windows has the same feature.

Don't worry google is reading your emails to sell you more crap!

Obviously you can do it on cmd. duh...

Doing a clean install on a computer . . . . I always forget to backup something. In this case the bookmarks on my browser.
Could be a lot worse, I suppose.

It was a bit like opening up a Dell or HP or something. So much bloatware.
Candy crush? Don't need it
Bing money? Go away
Xbox? Really? P. C. Not Xbox. Different idea alltogether.
Zunemusic? I thought that died tbh.
Cortana? No thank you.
And I'll take my news from not-bing, thank you.

I mean, I know why they're there and you need something standard to play mp3s. But after installation of Win10 I removed/disabled a lot of stuff.

Had to repair some things, which was to be expected. And re-install some others, also expected.
Had to re-build my bookmarks, because I'm an idiot. (Is it in appdata somewhere? I saved that)

So far 3 issues.

1) When I change default audio device all the audio changes from speakers to headphones (or vice-versa) except the mozilla tab playing twitch. I can play a video (over VLC, not the Movies and TV app. Although I suppose I should have at least given it a try before removing it, the xbox thing with the game bar really annoyed me and I might have gotten over-zealous) and it'll switch. I can do youtube and it'll switch. But twitch will stay on the device that was standard when I opened it. Probably not a win10 issue but a twitch/mozilla one.

2) My copy isn't activated due to internet connectivity (or other reasons) EDIT: this has changed to "Activation failed because this device doesn't have a valid difital entitlement or product key". And yes, I have the internet on the rest of the same PC.
I used this method of clean installing without upgrading first because I didn't want to do double work (the installation of the OS took 15-30 minutes, so that was a bit stupid) aaaaand that might've been a mistake. I have my genuineticket.xml, it just doesn't do anything when placed in the appropriate folder. I did generate that xml last month though . . . .
Now, I know you can activate it with the win7 key so I tried that next. But that complains that I'm running win 10 and the key is not valid for this (I'm pretty sure I didn't have 7pro).
I'm wondering if I didn't have a proper win7 edition. I might have gotten a vista -> 7 upgrade instead. But I had a genuine copy picture in the system overview and I was offered the upgrade, rather than ask for it (although I don't know the algorythm behind that message).
Can't find the official product key (I lived on 4 continents in the last decade. You lose stuff. Still have my XP and vista keys, however much good that does me. Can't find 98 SE anymore either though) just a scribbled version.
Internet says the activtion can take some time (although I expect authentification congestion isn't so much a problem these days) so I'll wait that out I suppose.
And then there's the Slui.exe thing so I'll give that a go. Country specific so I'll have to do that in the local language, I suppose. My IT-vocab, not so hot.

I'll report back.
Worst case I buy win 10 . . .

3) Worst of all: Localization. As a serial-expat can I just say this shit REALLY annoys me.
I live in the US
I have US date and time format
I have a US keyboard
I mean, I don't. But I can't trust windows (or android, or iphone, or AMD Crimson) to not start talking to me in the local language. Or offer windows store services in the local language. Or to load the lock-screen in the local language (that one took a while to undo)
Win 10 has a language choice (unlike Crimson) but if you indicate you live in Ouagadougou you surely prefer all the services in French, correct?
NO!
Win 7 already had this, but not as bad.

3 issues so far of which 1 is rather minor. I've had worse upgrades.

What's the WORST upgrade you've dealt with?

I like how the latest version/build 1511 lets you install these printer drivers without connecting the USB cable

All I had to do with the Canon, was plug it into a wall socket check for updates the driver was there. Install it. It scans and prints fine. Only thing is Canon navigator no longer works. That's fine. I can still scan with Paint

Before I had to connect it and run the canon install file (and select wireless), but the installer no longer works (it crashes in 1511)

And the Samsung laser was the same. Plug it in it, run the setup file , it picked it up wirelessly

And on the other pc, to save me reinstalling the Samsung drivers again on there, all I had to do was go to devices and printers , add printer, it found it, I selected it, it installed the drivers

But I had to download and run wushowhide, so I could hide future Canon driver downloads.

Because it usually failed. And if I didnt hide it, other updates wouldnt download

Two catagories

1) My dad's 98 to XP.
My dad had previously made a partition for the OS and one for data. He also had a 3rd he didn't seem to use. So I formatted data first. You have heard my earlier protestations that i'm an idiot? In my defense it was the smaller of the partitions.
During all this my mom dropped the mobile HDD while fiddling with it, conveniently bouncing to the hole through which humans ascend to the attic (Something that had happened to CDs in the past). This was the time when a mobile HDD was a HDD with a circuit board in cheap metal/plastic housing. The housing was busted and the ciruit board wasn't looking too hot either, either way it wouldn't show up on the computer. So I extracted the HDD and plugged it into the computer . . . . except that that didn't work for some reason. I had to use the connector from the CD drive, coz there weren't enough plugs, but there was somthing else I forgot that made it not work.
I ended up plugging it in mine, transferring the data to a new HDD and installing an actual seperate drive to install yet another safeguard for future bumbling.
Not living with my parents at the time (though in the same country) the entire process took 2 weeks.
I recovered the data but that wasn't the end of it. I'd given them a list of things to consider backing up. Due to marital communication issues all/most my dad's things ended up on that mobile HDD as well as all the things my mom said. This would have been about half the stuff she wanted.
As a bonding experience though; everyone had a hand in fucking that up.

2) 98 to 2000/ME, not sure which. I later understood this OS was widely denounced as being bad by . . . everyone.
I couldn't connect to any internet/LAN/thing
I'm pretty sure only half of my USB ports worked
480p, baby. Coz the drivers I'd prepared were rejected and I couldn't connect to anything to get other ones.
And could you still manually assign IRQs in ME/2000? I think that was the one when I couldn't get any sound because the sound card IRQ kept being taken by something else on both manual and auto settings.
I went back to 98SE and didn't switch until XP had been out for like six months and everyone was actually absolutely sure it wasn't a giant pile of crap. You may see this experience reflected in my win10 upgrade timing.

If I'd been forced to write this before upgrading I'd probably have stuck to W7 tbh.
Something always goes wrong and I end up frustrated for at least a week regardless of whether the OS actually is better and I'll have a better experienc the next 3 years.
Is Dx12 really worth it? Better be!

Do I get a badge for posting 4 times in a row?
"Talking to yourself" maybe?

I'm curious whether that technique (wiht the genuinieticket.xml) actually works if you do it properly.

I'm interested what that code generated bu SLUI.exe 4 actually means then.
Also I'm curious why the lady on the phone confirmed that the Win7 key I had was windows 7 home.

I'm very curious how I got to have win7 pro as I don't recall ever consciously buying that. I suppose it ended up on sale and I could get it for the same price as home or something. I built 3 or 4 PCs in Korea and upgraded my laptop from vista to 7 there. I think I bought at least 2 OSes there (I know one guy had a valid OS to install).
How the hell did I miss that though. I mean, it says so every time it boots. For 3 years on my current system alone and like 2 years before that . . .

To business:
Issues with Windows 10!

- The sound source thing is still there for twitch, but I havent' tried it with movies or youtube to see if the conditions are the same as before.
I'll run some tests. Try different browsers etc. Maybe evern try the twitch app for windows, though I understand that's pretty bad.

- I can now boot with Windows boot manager, but not with the SSD that actually holds the OS. Which is weird? I mean I don't recall that being a thing the last time (but I was distracted by the activation thing)

- I removed xbox app before signing in and disabling the game bar so . . . . now it pops-up when I open a game and I'll need to look for a different way to get that to shut up. I'd assumed that since the off-switch for the notification was there it was part of the app, but that would appear to not be the case.

Unrelated: Did I miss out on any functionality that win7 pro offered by thinking it was home?
Is there anything in the win10 pro that I should look forward to over Home? I understand I can actually plan my updates, which is pretty . . . . well, basic actually. But considering home doesn't get that: Quite neat, I suppose.
Wait, do I get Office for free or something? I got Office 2010 for 25 bucks through my last work and I'm pretty sure that doesn't work anymore.
EDIT: I have to check whether I have a volume licensing key now, I suppose.

Look for the app's directory, and shift+delete that.

No, you don't get office for free.

Too bad.
But I see the Home Use Program still runs. I'll check whether my current company has that, although I doubt it. And judgin by the software I use here it'd be local language only. Did you know windows and office shortcuts are not consistent in different languages? That's not too bad actually, though I still change from "show result" to "show calculation" rather than subscripting sometimes.
I suppose it is possible my rights to the last version I had actually expired when I left the company, but that would have been written in that "accept conditions" thing that noone ever actually reads. I'll see if I can install it agian with the code I had then.
Or I could check out open office, my wife has been using it for a while and for non-technical stuff actually prefers it.

Who would dare interfere with my narcissism?

And I do watch it online. I use mozilla for it mostly. The problem is switching from speakers to headphones with it.
I get the rest of the sound to switch. Video, music and other things running in mozilla. It's just twitch in mozilla that stubbornly refuses to switch audio outputs.
But I have to run some tests to see the exact boundaries of the problem.
And see if others have reported the same thing. For all I know everyone watching twitch on mozilla has been having this problem since the last mozilla patch or smthg.
For now I'm not even sure the sound drivers are correct. The (second) Win 10 install is rather fresh.

Windows movies and TV switches
Groove music switches
Chrome:
- Youtube switches
- Twitch switches
- Soundcloud switches
Mozilla
- Youtube switches
- Soundcloud switches
- Twitch doesn't switch

When I say "switches" I mean the sound output device is changed when I change default device as shown below.
FileDownloadHandler.ashx

I'm going to find some other audio things, both browser based and not, to test and I'll try the twitch/mozilla with no-script disabled.
But it doesn't appear to be a win10 thing, so I'll prob open up a different thread somewhere.
It just showed up upon migration to win10.

I downloaded Win 10 within the first week it was released and apart from teething issues (like not being able to access any of my folders cause my permissions were all messed up) it was great until I installed a GTX 980 last December and started having weird problems. I updated all the drivers I could find and then found out problem was the power cables for the GPU weren't secure. All the driver updates messed up my pc and I started getting weird start up and shut down problems. IN the last seven days I have reset windows.. that didn't fix it, and then last night I did a fresh install on my SSD and now it feels better... only time will tell if it is. I sure hope so.

Apart from that, I like Win 10 or I would have rolled back to Win 7. The fast boot makes up for some little niggles. Oddly I can only get Surround sound now using a optical cable instead of analog, it used to wokr fine before I reset windows last Tuesday.

Win 10 beats Win ME any day :)

I personally keep fast startup off since it messes stuff up on my tablet and PC.
