The poll would measure the feelings of a slim percentage of users of the OS, those who have problems and know enough about computers to visit the site. The silent majority who have no problems would not say a word as they don't know this forum is here and have no need to.

I am, not saying its a bad idea, just saying the results wouldn't portray reality outside of this forum.

Having to deal with Windows 7 computers after using windows 8 and now 10 I have to say that the newer OS's are a lot easier to use when it comes to accessing settings quickly and for the really lazy you got Cortana although I have yet to use it.

Windows 10 also has really good documentation which really helps understand some of the new features they added to it which makes learning for beginners and pros a lot easier, not that windows 7 doesn't have documentation but its fragmented & microsoft seems to finally have gotten it right with Windows 10.

For those people still interested in upgrading from win 7/8 for free, i strongly suggest to create the bootable device and not update "while you work". My brand new system got stuck in the "checking for upgrades" mode indefinitely (perhaps also due to a LAN / ethernet controller issue of my new MSI 170A ATX Tomahawk motherboard. Anyways, everything went much smoother by making the bootable USB.

I was afraid to switch to Win10, as i didn't like the new look and feel. But since the first version, things have been changed around and it actually now is not bad at all.

Buy an SSD disk, even if it's only for your boot device, it will make such an improvement : boot up, installation of software, what a major improvement ! I guess you could do that for win10 as well, but i strongly suggest to switch to Win10, at least your Win7 won't go out of support as quickly. Look where WinXP is at the moment: you can postpone !

Last but not least: Win10 supports more than 16GB of RAM. I had win7 home, it can only handle 16 GB of memory.

Buy a 250gb ssd and put win 10 and any applications you use on it as no point having fast loading windows and slow loading everything else. If it needs to be reinstalled with windows, it might as well be on c. The only things you don't need on there are massive games and library folders.

Yay, can use more than 16 gb... maybe one day that will be good. most people can live with 8 gb now though, maybe in 5 years my 16 gb might feel cramped.. maybe

Yes, the SSD should become the "C" (OS) drive and thus should have all software on it that you use frequently. Surely, even for games, if you havea 500 GB drive, you can fit your 5 best games on there as well. Load times will be insane, compared to regular SATA.

16GB of RAM is indeed usually enough, but just in case you do need the extra ram for video or studio applications, it's nice to have an OS that is not liimited to 16GB...

Why is windows 10 so flat and ugly tho?

Didn't microsoft look at what competition is doing? Linux Distribution, android, chrome book, mac etc.... Geez.... I dont understand a company as rich as microsoft can't hire a few good designers.

I mean, c'mon a few guys out of university would do better than this.

Have you not seen Android 6.0? Even 5.0 was similar to 10 in design. All the OSes are flat these days.

Flat can be pretty.... microsoft's UI is ugly!

Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder.
Personally, I don't put much effort or brainpower into what the OS looks like. I prefer to use the PC, rather than fret over the spacing between the min/max/close buttons.

Every single release of Windows after DOS has been ragged on for the look of the UI. Every time.

How long does it matter once you are using whatever software you want.

I mean does Tom's Hardware look different because of the ugly MS IU? Does Photoshop suddenly look too ugly to use?

I am sure some software that used the Windows 7 transparency may look different, but lets face it the OS runs software and THAT is what you are using.

This is the reason some people may use one OS over another too because it has the software they require or prefer.

They are adding some things to Windows 10 that may make it look better or worse to you. Custom tiles(for the most part) have been back for a while on Insider builds too.

True. In fact I can't tell you how many people would switch XP back to the "Classic Theme" because they didn't like the looks of it. Then when 7 was out people wanted the XP look then 8 they wanted 7 and so on and so forth.

it is a never ending cycle.

yes sure.... how about giving this option to people....

or let's say linux. You can use the type of UI you like or even change the whole theme experience.

Windows, once again, is way way way behind on that one.

For the record I prefer to use windows too, but just because it's the only OS that will run my games/software/GPU

but lets face it.... they do a very poor job on the UI and theme.

Again eye of the beholder. I have seen a lot of the themes for Linux and they are nothing major over Windows. To each their own.

What I said was not opinion though it was something that does happen. People always like what they are used to and hate change then get used to it eventually and hate the next change. I even remember back with Windows 95/98/2K when people would swear by the DOS UI and that the Windows UI was clunky and ugly.

To each their own.

2 things there

it's true to each their own. And it's true that some people don't like change and eventually you have to move on.... But when XP came out, you could use the classic look or the XP look. You had the option.

Second: I never said I wanted to the old stuff back... I found XP to be very beautiful and it's still nice to this day. I understand it's not a UI good for touch, therefor it's out dated. I never really like that glass look from vista and windows 7. I always found it a bit tacky. Now that being said, microsoft is designing a new UI and it's not nice at all. I mean it looks very amateur-ish. While others are doing amazing touch UI microsoft it uber *.
I am amazed to see how poor it is every time I get a notification on the bottom right corner. It's just a square with this horrible bleu colour. It would take a few designers to come up with some beautiful UI and people would say WOW!

Google is doing great work with their chrome OS and Android. Apple is doing great work with IOS and MAC OS... why is microsoft always so far behind.

<Language, please>

Yes.... have you seen the reception of windows 8 and their new UI..... people HATED it so much they had to retract.

people call windows 2012, the fisher price server around here.... hehe

Yes. From 7 to 8 they went pretty overboard. And pulled most of that back with 8.1.
Boot directly to Desktop, never see the Metro interface.

Do you remember the near universal revulsion with XP initially?

Whatever. It is what it is.
Use it, or don't. Your choice.

Like I said.... in the XP days, at least they gave the option to people to come back to the classic interface. Something they did not do with windows 10 and windows 8.

And no.... they are no options, we are stuck with windows. There isn't any serious competitions to a OS desktop unfortunately. Most software and games are made only on windows.

it's like saying if you dont like gas cars, it's your choice to use it or not... the reality is that we are stuck with it.

Windows 10 has the same UI as 8.1 it just doesn't have the Start Screen and has a Start Menu. The Start Screen is still there and if you have a Windows 10 Tablet it uses it and when you use Continuum it switches to desktop mode and give you the Start Menu.

If you think Server 2012 is the "fisher price" of server OSes then that is your opinion. Functionality wiser Server 2012 R2 is just as good as any others and a lot of things are more stable and that is what matters more than the UI in Server. In fact I remember when we used a command prompt based server because that was what worked best.

And if you think iOS and Mac is ahead of Microsoft you need to look again. iOS is designed to be easy to use. That is why people like it, it is easy and basic. Mac OS is the same. I don't like the Mac GUI. Never have. Again though, personal preference.
