AMD vs. Intel: Battery Life Investigated

I've never been let down by intel or AMD. I've been let down by Nvidia though.

I made the choice to boycott intel products (ok i still have my q6600 but I wont be buying another intel product...ever) because I disagree with the way they do 'business'. I dislike the way they are constantly under scrutiny for anti-competetive behaviour, and for ripping of customers.

I realise that many people believe this happens because they are a big company, and they look for ulterior motives, ie 'the EU hates intel' etc but there are a lot of bigger companies than intel that don't have multiple lawsuits, anti-competitive lawsuits against them.

I like the saying that it's ok to be a monopoly, it's not ok to act like one. Unfortunately intel have been abusing their position/money etc. Everybody knows it, deep down even the biggest intel fanboys know it.

Again, not wishing to go OT too much, but I'm just trying to explain why I feel so strongly about these little things. It's my belief that enough of these little things add up to a much bigger thing. Why else are AMD struggling to sell *better* and *cheaper* hardware?

To me, theres 2 points where you need to stop kicking something, whatever it is, One, after you see this company start turning it around, and doing the right thing, ehich AMD is/has been doing, with the obvious exceptiom of its mobile, and when its so far down, it needs a hand up, and not fun about hand outs either.
I see AMD close to both scenarios, if they clean up their mobile situation, itll be way different in terms of revenue

So there we have it. They need to perform better, and they need to change the mindset.
They dont need biased sites. They dont need for their achievements to go ignored, even when adopted by other companies, which they get praise for.
Some say, having a "native core means little when Intel did it right, but some of those same people will have you also believe that having a MCM was Intels idea first, but not recognize that AMD did it right tho

if AMD could work on pure technology, and not have to put up with the rampant fanboyism, advertising, history etc...they'd have an awful lot higher market share than 20%.

The phenom II is at least as good as, and mostly better than the equivalently priced core 2. Yet the core 2 sells 8-1. People are buying worse tech at higher prices just because it's 'intel'. That is the sort of mountain AMD need to climb.

ROFL! How about a big-breasted blonde woman with a guitar instead??

Almost sounds Zen to me 😀...

Personally I'd need a desk or more space than the fold-down tray on an airplane, for a mouse or game controller - ever try a first-person shooter with a laptop touchpad?? Might as well just butter up, cuz you're toast already 😀...

Yes - congrats! :)

Actually I'll take what HB said - the Ferrari & blonde woman. On 2nd thought, belay that last one, since my wife would fry my batteries in about 2 seconds...

Thanks JennyH, anyone who's a regular reader of Anand Lal Shimpi, his site or his numerous articles in CPU magazine and other technical journals is very familiar with his Intel tilt. All they have to do is read enough of his work to see it.

Belay that order! You're a real trekkie aren't you 😀

Tbh, I think anand is a lot better than most review sites. Some of their most recent stuff has been pretty pro-AMD, but it is almost always let down by the odd garbage review like this one.

I think anand himself has enough cash and respect to do the right thing now (not saying it was always that way), but some of his other reviewers probably don't.

I'm a bit bothered by the fact if you check anadtechs motherboard reviews for the last 2 years you'll see numerous reviews of Intel based motherboards (P35, X38,X48,P45,X58) and exactly 2 AMD based motherboard reviews (780G, 785G) The only time they've looked at the 790GX or 790FX is in conjunction with their CPU reviews, and that's just because they had to.

Of course! Isn't everybody?? :sol:

Actually at the moment I'm watching Stargate SG-1 on DVD. However I should point out that Col. Jack O'Neill is a trekkie - he wanted to name the Prometheus "Enterprise" instead 😀.

Wonder whatever happened to LtCommanderData - he used to post here a lot...

Now, now - that's Dolly Parton (she of "Dollywood" fame) that you're talking about. She's rich enough to buy everybody here a Ferrari. Or two :).

Of course she's kinda old by now, maybe I should dig up some pix of Loni Anderson. Or Pam Anderson 😀

Stop showing your blatant ani-camero bias. Everyone knows nobody wants a prius, and it is just Toyota screwing the consumer and paying off review sites to make it look good. Anyone in there right mind would buy the nonexistent 1950 Camero. Consumers shouldn't even be given a choice, because of what I think, and everyone thinks like me.

Not exactly surprise. Of course, if you want to play WoW or something you're sure gonna appreciate the extra GPU power on the AMD system 😀. I think Turions are just made on the old 65nm equipment till it's finally phased out.

I had to replace my laptop lately, and I almost went with Intel for its batterie life. Then I remembered all those things that sloooow IGP make me mad about, like not being able to play a single 3d game even with modest settings, suttering in playing HD video, and a few other things. So, I decided to get one with ATI3200 IGP, and even if I have less batterie life than with an Intel one, I can actually do something fun in the batterie life I have rather than being forced to do boring thing or surf the net to waste some time..

And to be honest, batterie time will vary from one user to another with the same hardware, so I don't really trust these benchmark or published batterie time.

Fact is, I plug my laptop, I enjoy my laptop, then I recharge my laptop. If I even need more batterie life, I'd rather get a netbook, because poor IGP equipped laptop are just like bigger netbook..

I know I'm coming in pretty late here, but I know a lot of people for whom the Intel would be better. Hell, the intel would be the better choice for me if I needed a new laptop. I don't game on my laptop aside from some Command and Conquer Generals at a friend's place (and I know the intel IGP can handle that - I've done it), and, along with all of the other engineering students at CU, need a decent amount of CPU power. Battery life is nice too. There are times when I'm running MATLAB on my laptop in class, and a netbook just won't cut it. Video cards don't really matter either, but the speed boost of the Core 2 would be quite noticeable. Most of my classmates in Aerospace engineering would agree with my choice too - not many of them play games, but they do run MATLAB and occasionally solidworks, and the extra CPU power and battery life would really be nice for the application here.

Basically, even though they aren't business laptops, there are still many cases when the longer battery life and more powerful CPU are worth the extra $80 (and don't just say to buy another battery - the CPU power is just as much of a reason if not more of a reason to go for the Intel as the battery is). Deny it though you may, many people don't ever use their computer for any truly graphics intensive tasks, and would find the Intel to be their better choice. In addition, the Intel will run cooler due to the lower power consumption, which can be nice if you want to actually use your laptop on your lap sometimes.
