I have contacted Rockstar support a total of 5 times. Although they were friendly and useful, they have exhausted all possible fixes of which none have worked. I am praying that you guys can shine some new advice down on me.

With over 1000 hours played of this game, I'll be very gutted if I can't get it to work. I have been trying to fix it for two weeks solid, pretty much.

I get the same error every single time:

Things I have tried so far:

  • Unplugging all USB ports except from a plain mouse and keyboard.
  • Stopping everything in ms-config apart from Windows services.
  • Turning off all start up services in task manager.
  • Deleting and reinstalling usb drivers.
  • Clean install of graphics drivers.
  • Clean install of GTA on different hardrives.
  • Deleting settings files and having the game recreate them.
  • Verifying Steam cache a million times.
  • Starting GTA in safe mode on lowest possible graphics.
  • Checking and fixing all Windows system files.
  • Making a second windows user profile with admin permissions.
  • Setting GTA to launch with admin privileges in compatibility mode Windows 7.
  • Clean install of GTA with Steam start with admin privileges.
  • Making sure GTA has access through Windows firewall.
  • Making sure the router has relevant ports open.

Possible Ideas I have left:

Fresh install of Windows 10
Resetting Bios
Buying a hammer and then a new PC setup :)

If we are truly in the brightest timeline, then someone out there knows how to fix this.

THE CONTROL

I have a 2080ti, 9900k, 32gb of 3200 ram and GTA 5 is installed on an SSD. All this in a Thermaltake tower 900 with 2 560mm rads.

I do not use a VPN. I do not have mods installed. I do not install ANYTHING on my gaming PC aside from Steam, Origins, Epic, Blizzard and MSI afterburner. I dont even surf the net on my gaming PC, AND I do a clean windows install twice a year.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, my PC is the perfect control in the experiment when testing for variables.

Since several days after the casino update (IMMEDIATELY after the horse glitch hotfix) I have been experiencing CONSTANT crashing in GTAV.

I can play for 10-20 minutes then the game crashes. This is consistent. I've tried uninstalling MSI afterburner. I've tried underclocking my card. I have tried every permutation of Nvidia control panel settings possible. Nothing short of playing single player offline works.

Rockstar broke something when they hastily patched the horse racing glitch. Their customer support can't help you and they certainly won't admit it. It doesn't matter if it broke your game or not, it was more important for them to stop players from making extra money then it was for you to have a playable game.

The only option we have is there hope they properly test their next update before they deploy it
You must be a clone of me as my PC is identical to yours and i also only use it for gaming only.

Hey
I found on a steam post this issue can be avoided by setting the game language to English
I usually play from from France so my game was in French, I find this strange because i guess some people already have their game in english and got crash but maybe the location is important idk.
This have been tested for 3-4h in game 2 time, and 1-2h one time so far and I got no crash.

I reverted the language to French and get a crash after 20 min.

I'm gonna play online now for a couple hours again (with english) and will update this post if i crash again.
Ok it run fine for 2h today and fcking crash again, didn't wait enough I guess sry.

Everyone thinks their "fix" works, until it doesnt. If you haven't put 20 solid hrs in without it crashing your "fix" probably isnt worth mentioning.

Sometimes it just randomly goes a few hrs without crashing.

I'm getting the same issue. All my other games work fine but GTA has crashing after10-20 minutes since after the casino update. I recently got a new pc set up this week and again on this new pc same issue and it's an entirely different video card and setup. All other games I play work fine. Most of my friends are having the same issues except the ones who have not updated their Nvidia drivers. I could roll back but the newest NVidia driver fixed an sli issue with Borderlands 3, so hopefully, Rockstar just fixes this.

Unfortunately rolling back the drivers doesn't seem to fix the issue either, I have tried with quite a few versions including 430.86 but still getting crashes.

Guess we just have to wait until Rockstar decide to address the issue.

Hey fellow gamers.
This is so sad.

I came across this forum and thought that I bettter add my recent experiences to this list. Hopefully someone from R* will see how many issues people are currently having with GTAV. The R* support is very weak at best. Personally, I have dealt with them in the past a few times and have ended up disappointed on all occasions.

After completing a new build, clean install of Windows 10 and GTAV, I started having random game crashes. This is unusual to me, as I have been playing from day one on PC.

Troubleshooting followed with:
Reinstalled Nvidia driver
Reinstalled Visual C++ 2015
Reinstalled GTAV from disc onto separate HDD

The crashing still happened. I formatted a new SSD and Installed Windows 10 and related updates. Stressed tested and benchmarked CPU, RAM and GPU. All was perfect with no over heating issues. Installed GTAV. After testing and changing all in game settings and playing for two days, it is still crashing. I have also tried many other things mentioned on this and several other forums.

I have come to the conclusion, this is definately a game file issue. My new build was finished about two weeks ago, this is when the game started randomly crashing. Before this time the game was fine. So, it is interesting after reading people have been having this issue after a game update.

Please R* fix this game error.

Has anyone changed your internet provider recently? It was the only change I made and I don't remember having the error before.I had an ADSL that IP was not fixed. Now I use an internet from a local provider that IP is fixed. Could it not be that? Because the problem only happens online.Does anyone have it offline?Does anyone have the problem on another OS than Windows 10? (7, 8.1)Has anyone tried to increase swap memory to at least 8 GB? I would test here now, but I'm not on the W10. (I saw someone say that changed that and the problems stopped)

I have heard people are able to play the game fine in offline mode, the problem only seems to be when you are playing online in both single player and GTAOnline.

My PC is running Windows 10 and has the crashing issue, but my laptop which also runs Windows 10 doesn't have the crashing issue.

I have been using the same ISP with a fixed IP address for the past ~3 years with no issues, has only been since the Casino update that the crashes have started.

List of things I have tried just for clarity:

-Clean installation of GTAV (twice)
-Clean install of Social Club / Rockstar Launcher (multiple times)
-Lowering game resolution
-Lowering in game settings
-Playing in Fullscreen, Windowed and Windowed Fullscreen modes
-Running game in safe mode
-Swapping out my RAM for new sticks
-Unplugging all devices from my system apart from KB/M
-Running GTA and any excecutables with admin privileges
-Rolling back Nvidia drivers to multiple older versions
-Verifying game data through Steam
-Increasing system paging file size to 8GB

Sadly none of these have worked.

Installed gta on multiple computers, one is brand new and with the older drivers people claim are stable but the crashes happen. Singleplayer works fine though. I think it's tied to something social club is doing when monitoring gameplay? That's the only constant that doesn't factor into singleplayer. No other games are crashing. It's specifically gta. People are even talking about it on the gta forums: https://gtaforums.com/topic/934020-gta-v-crashes-with-error-code-0xc0000005-help/?ct=1568870676 and on Steam. One of my friends who works for Maingear is also having this issue. I frequently play with them. They said they tried all kinds of things. We've both been trying to understand what's going on. It's really obvious though when you go into singleplayer and everything is fine and every other game being run works perfectly.

I'm wondering if it's a combination between Rockstar's DRM software/launcher, however it goes about doing it's thing (scanning for cheats etc) along with the possibility Windows Defender randomly/eventually fighting the game. If critical parts of Windows defender is malfunctioning, what else may be going on? Just a thought.

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/microsoft-patches-windows-defender-bug,40443.html

The issue followed an all-too-familiar pattern: there was a System File Checker bug in Windows that Microsoft attempted to fix with the release of Windows Defender version 4.18.1908.7 earlier this week. Instead of fixing the problem, however, the update reportedly messed up the process that allows Windows to scan files. An update released to fix one problem accidentally resulted in critical parts of Windows Defender malfunctioning.

had the same problem.
i guess there is something wrong with the latest update from Nvidia.
so i did the studio driver update with experience, and the game runs 5 hours straight on same settings i used and no more crash!

and believe me since it happen, i tried alot.

so i guess all Nvidia users got this problem?
for me now, waiting for good update driver of Nvidia

ohyeah, after the launcher update it was (***)ed again, indeed 10/20 mins, and sometime with luck an hour xd

but finally got the bogdan mission glitch under control, so all those hours of reading, updating, deleting, thinking, waiting, loading screen, fuk... they gonna pay back! xD

Hope it works for you guys too!

Same problems for me, I still have an open ticket with Rockstar support and no sign of a fix, in fact we are going around in circles. I have done all the re installs, verified game data, rolled back nvidia drivers and finally reinstalled Windows 10 nothing at all works. I have come to the conclusion the game is now broken sad to say. Usually the game crashes after around 15 mins you change a few setting and it is Ok for a hour, just as you are getting your hopes up that it is fixed it crashes again, I give up.
I wouldn't bother reinstalling a clean Windows 10 everything points to the game being broken, Rockstar will not admit it so I guess we will just have to wait for them to come up with a fix that is if anyone can be bothered to wait. Really poor support from Rockstar but that's nothing new.

I said it 'might' be. Who bloody knows, you certainly dont ;P

Btw, how MS has been stuffing up lately with updates AND how defender was compromised, one has to wonder. Just don't know. Im not running Win10 so i can't test but maybe someone will.
Because there was no windows update when the crashes started whichbstarted at the casino update

And it’s funny all of us that has been crashing since the casino update been asking for help since then and you get everyone else not helping saying nothing wrong with the game, how funny things now change when they are all getting the same crash lol. Oh and if it was a windows issue why is the game perfectly fine in offline mode? If it was windows causing it shouldn’t it crash in every mode?

I get that about Windows. People have reported problems in offline mode too, whether related, just don't know. Also Rockstar recently fixed issues relating to offline issues playing the game. Says it in the Steam page news for Gta5.

Was just pondering the idea regarding Windows 10. You're probably right though that Windows isn't involved since the problem started earlier then the suggested problem update i linked. I wouldn't ignore the possibility though something else in Win10 isnt helping.

Example guess about what im thinking. What if Rockstar changed how or when it scans your computer for mods/cheats and Windows security is getting involved and MS tried to patch the crashing issues but failed. Im probably over thinking it but the issue is bizarre and with that, bizarre ideas.

It probably is a Rockstar problem and it's taking a while for them to find the cause. But in saying that, myself playing single player (not offline) last week, it didn't crash over a couple of hrs playing. Im on Win7. Is couple of hrs enough? What do you reckon?

Hey guys, I have registered just to give you a solution that fixed my game crashing. For all of you, that has Nvidia, try using older graphics drivers. I have rolled back one version. Personally, v. 436.02 worked for me.
I have been playing GTA V for 4 days without a crash now.

Older versions of Nvidia drivers haven't worked for me, have tried at least three different versions including the ones mentioned.

The most stable I can get the game to run is using safe mode at 800x600 resolution, this still crashes every now and then, but I can play for at least an hour or so before running into one.
