Whenever I plug in my Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 it freezes mycomputewr
wherever it's at (usually at the detecting IDE drives aprt of the boot up)
hen the drive will make this chee-kunk! sound every 1.5 seconds for about a
minute. You can tell the disc inside is turning all the while because when
you turn it it will try to upright itself like a gyroscope (the things you
learn in physics class). Also interesting is as soon as I unplug it the
computer instantly unfreezes. So now I need to figure out how to fix this and
if I need to dig inside it what tools it will take to open it.

Drives bad, check for warranty. Seagate just extended
the warranty period on a bunch of drives.

If you open the drive up you will void the warranty, it
probably won't work after you put it back together, and
even if it does I would not trust it any longer than it
takes to get any needed data off of it.

I would also NOT recommend plugging or unplugging the
drive connectors or power when power is on.
Okay I admit I have done it once or twice, but it can
damage things like the controller on the MB.

Hello

If you open the drive you won't be able to use
it anymore and would be a waste to you, have the drive
replaced.

Time to call the data recovery profesionals, I reckon. *digs deep into wallet*

Just a chance, colleagues in work tried this on a defunct HD.
Place in plastic bag then into a freezer for a few hours. Plug into PC and
boot up.
They managed to get the drive working long enough to download all important
data files.
Might work, wouldn't invalidate warranty as opening it would.

That is part of a home remedy for "stiction" which he clearly doesn't have
since he's hearing the head move and feels the platters rotating.

My solution? Refer to the manufacturer's website for RMA information on
returning the drive for warranty replacement and then restore the data
from backups, if possible.
