(Scroll down for Tl;DR)
Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H Rev 1.2 (with a 3rd Gen Core i5 3470) about two years old.
But out of warranty cuz i was only given an year of warranty for it.
It was bought as a replacement for the same model of motherboard (Former was a Rev 1.1) since my desktop started freezing up randomly back then, and after a few months of misery i replaced the motherboard and the issue went away.
Then within a couple of months of replacing the mobo, my PSU died (a Seasonic s12ii 520, it was almost 5 years old) and i replaced it with a 600 W FSP (mostly cuz of its 5 year warranty and it was backed by one of the trustworthy PC shops in our country)
Anyway i had 2 speaker sets plugged into it and there were times when one of them wouldn't get detected properly (was somewhat rare and random) and i used to wonder whether it was doing something bad to the mobo, i would just reboot or replug them and they would be fine. Then due to commitments and honestly not having time for gaming and all, i rarely used this PC in a regular manner (often going weeks and months unused) and one day the perfectly healthy HDD died. I have an SSD (Samsung 850 evo 500 GB) so it's still running off that.
Somewhere along the line, sometimes some of the the USB ports didn't detect the mouse and keyboard. If i remember correctly, 2 ports basically stopped working but i really didn't care, just plugged the mouse or keyboard into another port.
Then i didn't even turn this on for about 3-4 months (due to exams) and one day when my brother turned it on it had frozen on him. So about a month ago i dusted it off, removed the ram and gpu (a 1060, which was a replacement for a 660 which died a few months before the mobo replacement incident), there was a layer of dust on the mobo and i dusted off most of it, and used a blower on it, only half expecting it to work.
It worked, i didn't check if all the USB ports worked, but the speakers and all worked fine. Then i couldn't turn it on again for about 2 weeks cuz of uni work, but did use it last Thursday night and it worked fine (was the last time i used it).
(Tl;DR skip to here) Today i started the PC again to find that the keyboard and mouse don't work. None of the USB 2.0 Ports work. BOTH USB 3.0 PORTS WORK!
Questions (please respond with anything you know)
Have a good day

- Tried all the USB 2.0 ports, none of em work, not even those on the front panel.
- Tried plugging in an external HDD, it's light lit up, so it is getting power but no data flow i guess.
- Tried removing the CMOS (first time i've ever done that) and it just reset the bios (so now i was stuck in the Bios reset screen instead of the windows login screen)
- Realised i could try plugging them into the USB 3.0 ports (only got two of em) and the keyboard and mouse worked! 😃
Questions (please respond with anything you know)
- Is it okay to use USB 3.0 ports for the mouse and keyboard? No issues with response time etc? (When i do rarely play games on it, i would really really like it to work at it's best possible level lol. I even use a cable for internet to reduce ping and jitter)
- How could i diagnose the issue? I'm leaning towards the mobo having a separate 'controller' (i have no idea what i am talking about, just imagining) for USB 2.0 which is probably dead while the USB 3.0 'controller' is fine (for now)
- What could've caused this gradual death? I don't have a UPS, Which i am thinking is the root cause of all my troubles (including the previous Graphics card, mobo & PSU)
- Would a UPS reduce issues due to static electricity via audio jacks? (I know, i use a PC with a GTX 1060 without a UPS, because a UPS which can handle the power draw of this machine is pretty expensive)
- And i know the motherboard has two USB 3.0 headers, so if i could get a couple of ports and cables to get myself another two USB 3.0 i would be okay for now. Is that possible? My case doesn't have USB 3.0 ports at the front, they are USB 2.0, could i replace those ports with USB 3.0 ports?
Have a good day
