Hello! I'm looking at upgrading my pc in order to play some of the newer games that are out but also future proof a little more for me. Currently, one game interested in playing is COD: Warzone, but it keeps crashing and I assume it has to do with my hardware after updating settings, drivers, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated on what my options are considering option A) mid price range and B) top of the line upgrades. Forgive my ignorance as I am new to upgrading. Here's my current specs and was wondering what options I would have without changing my motherboard. If you need more info, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Is your CPU running at 100% when it crashes? What are the CPU and graphics card temps at the time of the crash? Does it crash to desktop or a full system reboot? Your current processor is below the minimum system requirements for the game. You have sufficient RAM and probably a good enough graphics card.

Here are the Call of Duty: Warzone System Requirements (Minimum)

  • CPU: Intel Core i3-4340 or AMD FX-6300
  • CPU SPEED: Info
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • OS: Windows 7 64-Bit (SP1) or Windows 10 64-Bit (1709 or later)
  • VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 or AMD Radeon HD 7950
  • PIXEL SHADER: 5.0
  • VERTEX SHADER: 5.0
  • SOUND CARD: Yes
  • FREE DISK SPACE: 90 GB...

Open Device Manager and expand Display Adapters to (hopefully) find out the specific graphic card you have installed.

You can get an Intel Core I7-4770(K) for your current system, under $150 and that may alleviate the crashes you're experiencing. That will also extend your PCs longevity. You should also get a matching RAM for your system. If you're running 1-4GB and 1-8GB, you should get a matching 8GB module to replace your current 4GB module.

CPU today was running 100%, RAM was 67%, GPU ranged from 20-29% and VRAM was at 42% just sitting on the menus with the frames ranging from 50-54/sec. Then I saw the CPU drop to 92% before it crashed, going back to my desktop (still only on the menus). Every time it crashed, it would go to the desktop. I am unsure how to check the temp, but I know before when playing just practice mode I would see the graphics temp get to 55 and it would crash to desktop. My graphics settings are also on very low settings.

When checking Display Adapters, it shows the same thing mentioned above, but I found the old order for my GPU and it was a Gigabyte Radeon R9 280 OC 1072MHZ 3GB 5.0GHZ GDDR5 DVI HDMI 2XMINIDP PCI-E Video Card.

I am pretty sure my memory is not matching as I built it from salvaging components from a friend. Luckily this forum helped me with parts when built back in 2014! I believe my Z87-PRO motherboard is DDR3 with 4 slots so any suggestions on memory?

I'm was hoping just a new CPU and GPU is all that it would take to get me by for another few years before my "gaming" hobby ends as I am getting older. Would this work then for new CPU - https://www.newegg.com/intel-core-i7-4th-gen-core-i7-4770/p/N82E16819116900?Description=Intel Core I7-4770&cm_re=Intel_Core_I7-4770--19-116-900--Product&quicklink=true? CPU cooler needed? If so, any suggestions?

Thoughts on a new GPU too, if need, now that I shared the exact component?

Thanks again for the help!!

There's something wrong if it crashes mid game. I don't think your CPU is below minimum enough to cause crashing. Try doing rendering stress tests, does it still crash? If yes there's something that's wrong and an upgrade might not be the solution.

You can use a program like Hardware Monitor to check your CPU and graphic card temps.
I'm actually leaning towards a possible bad sectors on the hard drive or a failing drive. You might want to consider running a check disk to check your drive for bad sectors.
Code:
chkdsk c: /f

Good news Wolfshadow, I was able to play for two hrs tonight and zero crashes after running the check disk!! Thank you so much for that help!!

In order to not open another topic on potential upgrades, what are your thoughts on that CPU I chose above? Any suggestions on GPU and memory upgrades that are compatible with my current motherboard? If I am able to get some stuff for another 3 yrs or so of new games and not break the bank then I might as well do that too. Thanks!

I'd already recommended the Core I7-4770 so that's fine. Since RAM doesn't seem to be an issue, I'd make this a lower priority. As for your graphics card, I'd probably consider something like the RX-570 as a replacement for your R9-280.

That would probably get you through the next few years.
