Hi, I seriously need some help.

I currently have an i7 3770 (non k), 8gb of DDR3 and a GTX 1060.
I wanna upgrade to a RTX 2060 and 16gb of RAM. Basically all I need is more power in the GPU department and more RAM. That's about it.

Now my question is, should I get a set of 16gb of DDR3 (which is more expensive than DDR4) or upgrade Motherboard and CPU to run DDR4?
I thought about getting a Ryzen 5 2600 or a Ryzen 3 3300x (kinda low on budget), but in terms of Gaming performance there doesn't seem to be that big of a difference compared the 3770.

Honestly I'm totally fine with what the 3770 can do, but I also want a setup that's going to stay a few years.
But spending 50 bucks on DDR3 just feels weird lol.

I'm kinda stuck. Thanks a lot everyone.

Whatever you buy, you can sell.
Look on ebay for a 2 x 8gb ddr3 kit with specs like yours.
Probably $50 or so.
You will get your 16gb.
Then try to add in your old 2 x 4gb ddr3 kit and you may get 24gb.
When the time comes to upgrade the cpu/mobo/ram, you can likely recover much of what you spent.

Yeah, that's a good point.

If you are satisfied with your 3770, then do the RAM and a new video card; Newegg has some pretty good deals right now on 16GB kits of DDR3 1600, and last week one was actually on sale. Here are two links:
https://www.newegg.com/patriot-16gb...820220686?Item=N82E16820220686&quicklink=true

https://www.newegg.com/corsair-16gb-240-pin-ddr3-sdram/p/N82E16820233280?Item=N82E16820233280

If you are gaming at 1080 and have no plans to upgrade to 1440 or 4K in the next year or two, then a 1660Super video card makes more sense than a 2060 as it will save you some money and perform really well.

what are you running that needs all that ram? i have 16gb of ddr3 and if i hit 20% used its like " what's running??" malware scan .... Even when I drop to 8gb its 20%-25% tops

Check at your local e-waste recycling center (if they're taking visitors due to COVID). I've gotten DDR3 RAM at half the price of retail or less. If they do any volume, they'll have trays of DDR3 sticks.

(fellow 3770 non-K user here) What mobo do you have? Z-series perhaps!?

Before upgrading that GPU we need to talk about your PSU, specifically, brand, model and age.

It's game depending. I have 16Gb of ddr3 and can easily use 12Gb-13Gb. It's not that there's a need for 16Gb, just a need to cover the gap above 8Gb. And it's a 7 year old game that happens to have a ton of AI, made worse by multiple team members. CSGO is lucky to use 5-6Gb system total.

If you run out of reasonable ram, pagefile.sys is going to make your life miserable as it'll start involving storage, which can/will seriously bog things down, and not just in games.

You can find 8Gb of 1600/1866MHz all day long on ebay for @ $20ish

ohhh i got ya...im casual AF on gaming and only starrted in on PC when i stopped gaming and never touch my console. i don't really play multi player anymore...its just Me vs AI vs Covid time to kill. most i know about ram is from benchmarking overclocks. i tinker, guilty. but it makes you tighten it up and set your own timings...or loosen while you figure out yout cpu. thanks tho
