Y'know, given the pasting that Apple has taken in the media lately (Apple store wouldn't let someone buy an iPad with cash, they lost at least one iPhone 4 prototype, the iPhone 4 shat the bed during its debut, the iPhone 4 antenna design may be aethetically cool, but ANY RF engineer had to know it would be problematic), you'd THINK that Steve would apply thought before applying thumbs. What an idiot.

i'm siding with jobs on this one. typing a quick email is different from giving an interview. he answered her questions tactfully pointing out that if she has a legitimate problem they would assist her but she did not, she was just being a whiny brat complaining when she didn't get what she wanted, saying she is a customer with a problem nto realising she's a customer with a problem unrelated to the function of one of her devices btu a personalk problem... kids these days >_<

I'm with Steve here. These so called "journalists" are really pain in the ass. You can't really say anything. In this case, if you agree and help her out, she will tell EVERYONE that Steve himself helped her. Can anyone guess what happens next? There will be thousands of students needing your help.

And again, if you tell her politely to back off, she will go public on how she has been treated badly.

Either way, it was no-win situation for Steve. The best way would have been to ignore the request altogether, but that would have caused our "journalist" to write that Apple doesn't reply to her at all.

I think journalists should start treating people nicely, not making a personal revenge to everyone that doesn't co-operate with them, or trying to make a scandal out of everything they can.

It doesn't surprise me that the PR department of a major company would fail to respond. However, traditionally, when CEO's get involved with this sort of thing, it is usually to play the "good guy" and take the opportunity to show what a wonderful company they are by the CEO responding to this "little person". Yes, all big companies probably think of us as a "little person". But Apple is the one telling us to "think different" - while at the same time shoveling out arrogance directly from the top.

Mr jobs and Apple would have been better off if he had just not responded and added her to his spam filter. But noooooooo. So in this case "thinking different" than other companies means to treat her even worse than she would have gotten from HP or Dell where in all likelihood she would have gotten no response at all.

Which is better? You decide.

It's hilarious that she thought she "deserved" a response, and that the company should revolve around her world (Indictive of the selfish attitudes that envelope our world).
What is even more hilarious, is that she (as well as so many other Apple lovers) thinks that Steve actually cares for people and his customers!

Also, why does Apple really like to help out university students?

This is their target demographic. They will have money one day, so they are actually being indoctrinated, not helped.

Gotta get the hooks in early, lest they stray.

For colleges nationwide, Apple is at the forefront of improving the way we function in the academic environment, increasing the efficiency of conducting academic research, as well as sharing and communicating with our college communities

With that kind of hardcore ass licking, Jobs probably thought it was someone trying to poke fun at him.

First, as some of you say, it might be a fake email.
Second, She is lying. "Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile"? Guess Jobs just saw that and didn't bother seeing the rest of the email.
Third, It is called Market research and this is student's responsibility, not the company being observed.
Fourth, She has eagerness only in her grade, not the whole project to give new students iPADs.

Man, if I was Steve Jobs, I would have messed with her big time. Make up some weird ass story and see how she responds.

[citation][nom]zoemayne[/nom]I hate apple but this is unreasonable + she sent her messages with a Blackberry!!! Apple has too many customers the CEO should not be dealing with this.[/citation]

Not that I disagree with your assessment of her, but Mr. Jobs chose to engage her. If he was of the mindset that you present, then he should have forwarded her email to the proper people and had it dealt with (or not). Instead, he chose to have a back and forth that ended up making him (and her in a sense) look like a pompous ass hat.

Pick your battles, Mr. Jobs. This wasn't one you should have waged.

It's obvious - "Sent via Blackberry". She should have changed that to "Sent via iPhone".

[citation][nom]jitpublisher[/nom]Anyone who believe Jobs was the person actually responding in this email string are bigger idiots than the girl is.[/citation]
Think before you speak. It is common public knowledge that Steve Jobs does in fact reply to emails, and quite often. Anyone who believes that Jobs would pay someone to do a poor job of responding to his emails is almost as big an idiot as you (since we're name calling and all). =P

My take on this: http://lock3.us/blog/?p=135

[citation][nom]sejin[/nom]Shes just one customer out of 300 million, why should Apple care what she has to say? This is just another example of why I don't like Apple.[/citation]
Right. Because if you emailed Steve Ballmer, he would personally respond to you. And when students email the Microsoft PR department, the Microsoft PR staff quickly responds to their emails and helps them get good grades. LOL. Get a clue, please.

People need to learn that "No" is a valid answer. Jobs was well within his right to be short and rude with this person. He was polite in his first two EMAILS. I have said far worse things to solicitors over the phone, who after two "No Thank You"s kept pressing the issue.

On the the third "No" you can throw etiquette out the window and let them have it!
That's my rule.

One thing I hate about Apple. Steve Jobs. He is arrogant and self centered and really only cares about selling China made crap at premium prices. When is the last time you heard about Apple or Steve Jobs actually helping people?
Donating to a cause. Some may hate Bill Gates but he has done more to help kids and other causes then Steve will ever do. I like some of Apple's products but I never will pay full price for them. I won't give Steve the satisfaction of making that greedy grin any bigger then I have too.

So ....
Why did you blackout the email of the student in question (Chelsea)? Maybe SHE doesn't want to be bothered by hundreds of emails about issues that are not relevant to her??
I fully support SJ. Customer or not, she doesn't have guaranteed access to the CEO. Most CEOs wouldn't even read their own emails personally, almost none would respond.

Wow, companies really do take on the personality of their CEOs. A student goes through the proper channels for a few answers to simple queries and gets shut down. She contacts Jobs who is a jack***. Apple at it's best right here.

Welcome to Apple journalism! Since this has taken a decidedly negative turn, she will undoubted have her career as an apple "tech" reporter shortened considerably. Magic 8 ball bible says "Ye shall never ever receive any apple product or press literature to regurgitate to the zealotry forever here after. So sayeth the Jobs". Better change majors.
